Thought: Musicians & Bands don’t have egos????

You see this all the time in the music world. Bands & musicians complaining about other musicians having “huge egos”. Some musicians don’t want anything to do with egos of other musicians. They want to stay away from musicians who have ego problems as much as possible. You know what?

I find it pretty funny and hypocritical that bands complain about egos. Why?

Because as much as you hate to admit, we all have huge egos even if you think you don’t. That’s right, I said it. Every musician and band out there, we all have egos. That includes me as well.

Think about it. Everyone of us are desperate for more recognition, we all want to promote ourselves to death, we all want to get known and we all want our music heard. That’s not having an ego problem? Yeah, okay.

When you complain about other egos that kind of makes you an ego-maniac yourself. You think you’re better than that guy. Either that, or it kills you ’cause you can’t take it cause this musician is a better player than you.

When you want to put yourself out there as a musician, you’re gonna deal with ego-maniacal musicians all over. Best thing to do is have some balls and deal with it. Don’t let it get to you.

  1. I’ve always said every musician has somewhat of an ego. I mean, think about it: you go to a bar, club, or coffee house and get on stage so everyone can pay attention to YOU. It’s like you’re saying, “Hey, look at me! I should be the center of attention!”

Whenever I have accused other musicians of having bad egos, I really should have replaced that word with bad attitudes. It was meant more as a criticism of the fact that, when they were in a band with me, they weren’t open to any ideas about the direction of the band other than their own. I always tried to listen with an open mind. Sometimes I failed, sometimes they did. That’s life though. But then how do you ever make a band work if everyone has an ego problem? Well, then you just need to find egos that fit together nicely LOL.

I will say one thing though: I remember some maniac (back when Myspace was more popular than Facebook) going on some long rant and rave about me, saying how I think I’m “the world’s greatest singer and musician.” In all honesty, I don’t think that. I’ve been playing guitar longer than I’ve been singing, so I know I have a long way to catch up with that. As for the other accusation, I don’t think I’m the world’s greatest songwriter either. HOWEVER, I can say with absolute honesty I do think I am a GOOD songwriter, and that the material I produce is of a high enough quality that it deserves to be heard by other people. If they don’t like it, that’s fine…as long as I know that it was an honest expression of myself because, in my mind, that’s what true art is: an expression of yourself, not of something that you hope other people will like.
