Film Review: Priest

Starring: Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Maggie Q

Directed by:  Scott Charles Stewart

Last Thursday afternoon, I went to see the new vampire movie, “Priest 3D”. I meant to post this review that Thursday evening, but I was not at home most of that evening. I went to a family member’s college graduation in Glens Falls and we ate dinner at a Japanese Restaurant after that. I also picked up, the new videogame, “L.A. Noire” for the PS3. I won’t start, “L.A. Noire” right away, I’ve just started the new “Mortal Kombat” game and want to play that for a while.

On with the review of “Priest 3D”…

Plot/synopsis: A post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, is set in an alternate world — one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend, a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

Yes, I know everyone is getting sick & tired of vampire movies. Hollywood have been giving us shit vampires movies lately. Was this one a crap vampire movie, you may ask? No. This was actually a really good one. I thought the writing was terrific, it told a wonderful vampire story. It was smart and intelligent. It was a mix of horror, sci-fi and action. The casting was also great.

Paul Bettany did a really good job, but I was more impressed with actress, Maggie Q. Maggie Q made the movie for what it is, in my opinion, she stole the whole show. She had this major action scene toward the end of the movie that was very exciting. The action scenes were a blast to watch, yes it is an action packed ride. My only disappointment of this film is that the film was too short. It was only a 90 minute film, and it could have been a good 2 hour film. Also, this film didn’t really need to be 3D.

I’m a huge fan of vampire fiction. I love to read vampire novels and watch vampire movies. Finally, Hollywood gives us a great vampire film. You should definitely check this one out.I’m already looking forward to the sequel.

Score for “Priest 3D” = **** ( 4 stars as in “excellent”)
