Things that piss me off in a gym…

When you workout in a public gym, you’re going to experience a lot of things that are going to piss you off. I’ve been there. People are crazy at gyms.

What are things that piss me off at a public gym? Here’s a short list:

  • Equipment Hogging – There are guys in gyms that spend way more than a half hour on the same equipment. If I need to use something, and some guy is taking forever to use it. That drives me crazy.
  • People not taking their weights back to where they belong – One time I had to use a leg press a while back, and the leg press machine was already full of 45 lb weight plates that I had to take off myself because the person that was using it before didn’t bother to put them back themselves. This drives me crazy too.
  • Weight dropping – Earlier today, there was a guy doing dumbbell chest presses on a bench near to where I was working out. He was like lifting 50 – 60 lb dumbbells around that, when he gets done with his set, he just drops them to the floor, making a loud crashing sound. There’s no reason to drop the weights. Just bring them down slowly and easily, then set them on the floor. Handle weights with care. I think the reason guys drop weights to the floor is not because they are heavy, it’s because it’s an ego kind of thing. They want to think of themselves like, “Gggggrrrrr, I’m tough, so I need to show it in front of everybody”. I lifted heavy dumbbells before, and I never drop them. If they are heavy for you, get a spotter. Of course, most won’t get a spotter. They think they’re tough without a spotter too.
  • People trying to start a conversation with me during my workouts – Hello people, I’m working out. Shut up and leave me alone. I need my concentration, thanks.
Well, that’s pretty much it. Usually the public gym is pretty cool, but sometimes things happen that drives me crazy. That’s what you get when you go to a public place, though.

  1. Nobody’s bashing anybody. Only speaking the truth, and yes dropping weights to the floor is wrong. Not only that it may damage the weights and the floor a little bit, it also creates a distraction with other people. There’s no reason to do it at all. It’s just to give people a little advice and a lesson when hitting the gym. Guys drop weights to the floor all the time and it’s annoying. This post wasn’t aimed at one person, it’s pretty much aimed at all people who goes to public gyms. Remember, public gyms don’t revolve around you. Have some respect and be courteous to other people. That’s what this blog rant is all about.

  2. You used me as a specific example. The floor is padded. Thats for a reason. They know that weights get dropped. People dont drop weights to get people to look at them. Its not because their heavy. Its because they dont want to try to sit up holding hundreds of pounds. Its easier to drop them. Plus they didnt even make a loud noise.

    1. Well, man, I didn’t use anybody’s name, ’cause I don’t even know who you are. Never met you before and this post was never intended to call you out or anyone, that wasn’t the point. This post was just me ranting about my frustrations that happen in the gym. I do this all the time, when I see people do wrong things at the gym, I just go online and rant about it, hoping to inspire other people to not do the same thing the next time they hit the gym, and this goal worked since someone from the gym actually responded, lol.

I disagree with weight dropping, just my opinion. I’m pretty sure the staff at the Y prefers people to not do it, most importantly, it could cause injury to other people. What if someone walks by you while you were working out, you drop the weight and it falls on someone’s foot? Could happen. Just something to think about.

If you knew who I was and knew that I was there, how come you didn’t say “hi”?

  3. And about your negative criticism on how I do things in the gym, that’s fine. Say and think what you want about me. I know what I’m doing and I just do things my way. I know I got a lot of work to do, but that’s because I’ve only been doing this for three years or a little over. I know I”m not Arnold or Sly yet, but I’m off to a great start.

  4. Ive been lifting for a lot longer than 3-4 years and ive never had anyone in a Y come to me and speak to me about it. Ive hundreds of pounds on hang cleans and no one says anything. I didnt talk to you because i dont know who you are ive just heard about you. By the way Sly took steroids.

    1. Sly may have taken steroids in his past when he was younger, but he doesn’t now. All bodybuilders get accused of using them, so this is nothing new.

You can defend it all you want, I just disagree with it. It’s all about the safety and protection of yourself & others. It could also injure yourself. It could damage your hands. It could damage your shoulders and your Rotator cuff. I don’t do a lot of heavy lifting. I mix it up, muscle confusion. It is also not good to lift heavy anyways.

When I train in the gym, I don’t do a lot. I just go in there and do a few quick things, so it won’t be considered over training. More isn’t more. Less is more.

I think the real reason you didn’t want to talk to me ’cause it obvious you’re another “hater”, since it appeared you were talking shit about me behind my back to your friend or who ever he is. That’s okay though, I”m fine with that. I’m done debating. Comments closed.

  5. One more thing I just wanted to add, you coming to my blog trying to make comments on you acting like you’re better than me kind of proves my point that most guys in the gym have an ego problem and they all think they’re tough guys.

I eat clean and don’t drink alcohol, that’s how I keep my body fat low. You know there’s no reason to come here, I think you guys are just jealous of me, period. Now the comments are closed.
