Since I have bad grounding issues in this room for plugging in my guitar to record, for now, I’ll just play and record unplugged. I recorded guitar parts with the microphone pointing toward the sound hole of the acoustic. Listened to the playback and it sounds alright. A little background hiss but that’s because I’m using the Shure SM58 mic but the hissing is not that bad.. Someday I’ll figure out a way to get phantom power so I can use the condenser mic — the Shure SM86 — that way the background hiss will be gone. I do like recording unplugged acoustic. It’s a more true acoustic sound. Started recording vocals for a song today as well.
Feels great to be recording and writing songs again, though.
These new songs will be a different sound than my earlier stuff. Trying to change my style of music a little bit. I think performing family friendly acoustic music could possibly get me a slightly bigger audience.

Hey Kev…It’s Mike. You need to get a pre amp that has phantom power. You can get a pretty cheap one for under a hundred bucks if your low on cash and want to get started. I started with a $60 Behringer preamp and it got the job done. I have since upgraded to a focusrite saffire pro 24 for a couple hundred and it sounds awesome. Ask the guys at Parkway and they’ll be able to help you.
The preamp will let you plug your guitar straight into the computer as well. I do that and use a program called Guitar Rig and it sounds awesome. Just another option for you to consider if you pick up a preamp.
plugging in your guitar into the preamp and straight into the computer will fix your humming issues.
Thanks, dude. Getting a preamp is probably the best idea. I really would like to use the SM86 microphone ’cause it was an expensive microphone and I really want to record perfectly clean. I’m sure there are preamps out there where you can plug in the mic and guitar the same time. I’ll look around google.

This might be the Behringer preamp that you were referring to:

I’m probably gonna order this. Right away, this week.

Congrats on the purchase! Hope it works out for you!
Just getting back from Radioshack and they didn’t have the 1/4 to XLR male cable… they just had the 1/4 to XLR female. I still maybe able to use the 1/4 to XLR female with an adapter, somehow? I’ll work it out. I didn’t get anything from Radioshack but might go back later this evening.
