Film Review: “The Lego Movie”…

Starring: Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett

Directed by: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller

Today, I decided to check out “The Lego Movie” that everyone is talking about… here is my review…

Plot/synopsis: The LEGO Movie is a 3D animated film which follows lead character, Emmet a completely ordinary LEGO mini-figure who is mistakenly identified as the most “extraordinary person” and the key to saving the Lego universe. An ordinary guy, Emmet is mistaken as being a “Master Builder” or one who can save the universe. Emmet and his friends go on an epic journey to stop the evil tyrant, Lord Business, who is bent on destroying their LEGO universe by gluing it all together.

Like everyone else, I used to collect Legos and play with them myself when I was a kid. I used to be obsessed with LEGOS, used to collect a lot of them. I was skeptical of this movie but since this movie is getting positive reviews everywhere, I decided to check it out for myself. I don’t go see kids movies that much. I only saw this one ’cause I used to be a fan of LEGO toys myself as a kid.

Despite the positive reviews, I would have to say that this movie was a slight disappointment. Kind of expected more. Yes, all the stop animation and CGI visual effects were pretty impressive stuff. The characters were good but I thought the story was kind of lacking a bit. Story was a bit too complicated… especially for little kids. I’m pretty sure all  the kids who went to see this movie didn’t understand the plot at all. I understand they wanted to make a Lego movie for kids but they should at least make the plot simple to understand for children. The plot was more aimed at the adult audience than the children, I thought. Yes, the film sends a nice and important message about Legos which was the point but I had a hard time understanding what the story was about. The story tries to be humorous but didn’t laugh at any of the jokes too much.

Other than that, the action scenes were pretty entertaining, though. The characters were fun. Everything that have something to do with Lego is in there… even all the Lego movie characters were featured in the film like: Star Wars, Superman, and other Justice League characters. Another disappointment was that they totally neglected Indiana Jones. I couldn’t understand why the film ignored Indiana Jones when that character have been an important part of Lego for a long while now. Saving Indy for the sequel maybe?

Voice acting and casting was good but that’s probably the only thing that was good about the film. Although, “The Lego Movie” have been getting rave reviews… I didn’t really find it all that special. It was just okay. Nothing great, nothing amazing like so many make it out to be. It’s worth taking your kids to see this film but seeing this movie alone, I’d wait for DVD. I kind of wished I saw the new “Robocop” movie instead.

I’d give it one thumb up.
