Film Review: Deliver Us From Evil

Starring: Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez

Directed by: Scott Derrickson

Today, I have just seen the newest horror film, “Deliver Us From Evil” which is based on a true events. I was gonna do this review on a videoblog but I don’t really feel like going through all that work so I’ll just do the review quickly on here.

Plot/synopsis: New York police officer Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana), struggling with his own personal issues, begins investigating a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes. He joins forces with an unconventional priest (Edgar Ramirez), schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing their city. Based upon the book, which details Sarchie’s bone-chilling real-life cases.

This story is based on upon the real life story of NYC police officer Ralph Sarchie as you just read above. This film mostly got negative reviews but why? I went to see this one ’cause I LOVE horror films for one and I also love movies about demonic possession. There have been many demonic possession movies over the years. They just keep coming and coming but most demonic possession films in the past were goofy and silly as hell with the exception of “The Exorcist” which is obviously the best movie about possession.

This movie here, “Deliver Us From Evil” makes demonic possession more realistic and more believable. However, this isn’t really a straight up horror film… it’s also a cop drama that involves demons. This film is not just about people being possessed it’s about a police officer becoming a demonogolist which is a systematic study of demons or beliefs in demons.

I thought, “Deliver Us From Evil” was a great horror film. I thought a lot of it was pretty scary and disturbing. This film seemed like a mix of “The Exorcist” and “Se7en” mixed into one. This film felt like David Fincher could have directed it. I thought the script was well-written and well-acted by cast. Eric kills it in this role.

This film will keep you guessing and will keep you at the edge of your seat all the way through. There are some disturbing and graphic moments throughout the film. It has a good exorcism scene at the end too. The film was entertaining as hell and I thought it was great. I wasn’t bored one bit.

Two thumbs up.
