Album Review: Go The Weasels “AARP”…

AARP

I got this album by a band called, the Weasels, in the mail, so I thought I would give this album a review.

The Weasels, are a rock band from the Albany area. The bands members include: Doctor Fun (lead singer, keyboardist, saxophonist, and he plays a variety of other instruments), Roy Weasell (electric, acoustic guitars, keyboards and other instruments), and Chris Graf (keyboards, bass, and other instruments). On this album, they also collaborated with other musicians such as guitarists Chuck D’Aloia, and Eric Finn. This album also has contributions from saxophonist, Brian Patneaude, and Sarah La Duke who provided some vocals.

This would be considered the band’s 6th album, and the album has a total of 15 tracks. The album has 60 minutes worth of music. As for what styles are on the album? Well, from what I’ve heard, there is a combination of different genres. It can have something for everybody. If you like tight rock songs with jamming riffs and blistering guitar solos, you will hear some of that. If you like folk, and bluegrass type of songs, you will hear a little bit of that — especially, a song like, “Invasion of the Body” — which is a great tune. You will also hear a lot of jazz, and jam band type of stuff.

Dr. Fun’s vocals — whatever his real name is — an be catchy to listen to. He also creates interesting vocal harmonies. The lyrics on the album can be pretty humorous, and you can sing along to a lot of these songs, pretty easily. The lyrics on the album seem to be telling a story. Each song tell a different story. Some of these songs can be politically-driven — specially, a song like “Do The Teabag” — which is one of my absolute favorite tracks. In my opinion, I think, “Do The Teabag”, is one of the best songs on the album; along with, “Invasion of the Body”. In fact, all songs on the album are great. The lyrics has some of the best lyric writing on an album, I’ve heard in a long time. These guys certainly know how to write them.

The album has pretty tasty guitar solos — which all guitar players should love. The guitar solos on the album, is one of the big things on it, that will keep you listening. The leads are pretty musical, and it seemed they were improvised. Who ever the lead guitarist is on the album, certainly knows his stuff.

While I do love every song on the album, the tracks to watch out for are: “Invasion of the Body”, “Do The Teabag”, and “The Wailing Song”. I think this is one of the best local albums, I’ve heard in a long time. I don’t know how often these guys perform live, but they need to play live a lot more often. If they get themselves out there more, they could become something, HUGE. There is something special in this band, and I’m a new fan. After hearing this album, makes me want to listen to their first 5 albums. I listened to, “AARP”, like 3 or 4 times. These guys are cool!

Album Review: Skeletons In the Piano, “Please Don’t Die”…

FRONT

BACK

The band, Skeletons In The Piano, coming from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., just gave me the privilege to listen to their new upcoming album, “Please Don’t Die”. The band, Skeletons in the Piano, was formed by Eli Hargrave (lead vocals, guitar) and Eric Donovan (drums)  in 2007. They released their debut album, “Certain Slow Murder”, with just those two as members, and since that album got a lot of feedback, they formed a whole band together, adding members Dustin Alexander (Bass), and Jeff Ayers (violin, keyboards). Later they added, Brad Thibodeau (guitar), and they added two belly dancers for their live shows. Yes, they really have belly dancers who dance to their music at their live gigs. You have to see it to believe it.  In 2010, they released the Don Fury produced album, “Stranger On a Damned Staircase” and another EP called, “Short Pig”, shortly after.

The new album, which includes 8 tracks (see the track listing, 2nd picture). The songs can range from 3 – 8 minutes long at least. The album will be available digitally (Itunes, Spotify, etc.) and the album will be available on Vinyl at their live Putnam Den show, May 11th. The album is being released under, Magnetic Eye Records.

The band likes to describe their sound as psychedelic grunge. They also said they are influenced by Black Sabbath, and the Doors. From what I heard, these guys don’t really sound like anyone else. They really have their original sound. When you listen to a unique rock n’ roll band like Skeletons In the Piano, you know it’s them when you hear them. This is something I’ve never heard before. The band’s sound is tight, and aggressive. The guitar tone is pretty heavy, and there are some pretty complex rhythms. It sounds like these songs would be difficult to play if you tried to learn them yourself. Even though these songs sound a bit complex, these guys really have the power to make their songs catchy, fun, and easy to listen to. Eli can really sing. That guy has the pipes for sure. When you hear this guy sing, he can easily pull you into the music. His voice will certainly give you goosebumps throughout the whole record. The lyrics and song titles, may seem a little strange to you but they are really artistic and so different. There is some bad language through some of these songs, but when you listen to this album, you won’t mind them.

This band may sound great on an album, but when you go see Skeletons in the Piano live, you’ll get a different experience. Complete with belly dancers, and all. I’ve never seen Skeletons In The Piano live at a show, but after hearing this album, makes me want to. Keep in mind, I only listened to this album digitally ’cause I don’t own a vinyl player. If you want better sound quality, I would recommend you get the vinyl of, “Please Don’t Die”, from them. A better listening experience.

I think good things will come up ahead for this band in the future. This is another band, who I think deserves national recognition, too. They are one of the best bands in the area. Rock n’ roll doesn’t get recognized too much around here anymore, and these guys do a great job on keeping rock music alive. These guys still make it alright to listen to rock n’ roll. I couldn’t stop listening to, “Please Don’t Die”. Listened to it like 4 or 5 times. It was a pretty amazing album, and they just made a new fan. I will definitely come out to see them live, hopefully soon. I’m definitely gonna try to make their Putnam Den, May 11th show. When ever I’m ready to start performing live again, I would even love to open a gig for them someday.

Album Review: Vinyl Floor “Peninsula”…

Vinyl-Floor1

The band, Vinyl Floor, is from Copenhagen, Denmark. They sent me their 2nd album, “Peninsula”, to get reviewed and I had to give this album a listen to twice before writing my thoughts about the album. I was pretty impressed with the album. The album has a mix of rock n’ roll songs and slow ballads. The rock songs have some great guitar riffs and there is some pretty impressive guitar solos too! The songwriting is good. If you dig stuff like Coldplay, you would probably like this album. I was most impressed with the album’s sound quality. The sound quality is pretty amazing. The story behind the album of Utopia and Dystopia, is pretty intriguing stuff. The songs on the album has a lot of heart and you will immediately hear that once the album starts. This band may be from a different country, but once you listen to this album, they don’t sound like from another country. They sound like an American band, for sure!

You should really give these guys a listen and check them out.

The description of the album, “Peninsula”, is under the line below. Thanks for the band, Vinyl Floor, for sending me this album.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Dear reader!

Enclosed is the new Peninsula album by Vinyl Floor. The album will be released both digitally and physically on the 20´th of February 2012 by Karmanian Records. It will also be released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland by Divine Records/Broken Silence.

Peninsula is recorded in Sweden in the summer of 2011 and is mastered by Ryan Smith, Sterling Sound, New York.

The Vindla String Quartet – who has played with Forest and Crispian and Nina Persson from The Cardigans – contributed strings on seven songs.

Other Swedish musicians contributed horns and lap steel guitar.

Vinyl Floor hails from Copenhagen, Denmark and Peninsula will be their 2nd album.

Peninsula is a concept album divided into two parts – the well known literary concepts of Utopia and Dystopia. Utopia is the image of perfection where happiness and love reigns. Dystopia being the contrast where depression, sorrow and forfeiture reigns. In the world of philosophy these concepts may occur individually, but as many might agree, the world is never just black and white. Vinyl Floor therefore explores the tension between these two concepts. However, on the album, Utopia and Dystopia are more than just concepts – they also appear as worlds for human beings to reside in.

In the Utopia part you may find dystopian tendencies such as doubt, broken dreams and enmity. In the Dystopia part you may find traces of conscience and regret but also glimpses of hope for a better future. This dynamic amalgamation is the focus of the album and comes to life via the lyrics, moods and artwork.

Speaking of a peninsula, one of its characteristics is the connection to the main land but it´s also part of the foaming sea surrounding it. In the album concept the peninsula is a metaphor for mankind: ’No man is an island’. A man can´t exist without a bond to the surrounding world. A man is defined by his surroundings.

The artwork has been provided with an old fashioned compass which can be placed in many directions. On the surface the compass navigates geographically but the meaning is both objective and subjective. ‘Where am I going?’. ’Where are we going?’.

The first track Frames and Orchids takes off with the natural cycle – birth and bloom/spring. Track six Diverging Paths marks the fall of Utopia and Dystopias emergence from the ashes of Utopia. Track seven Force You Through kicks off Dystopia and unleashes its dark powers. Track twelve Frozen Moon reveals an opening through which the listener can escape Dystopia and go back to Utopia. What is in between all of this is entirely up to the listener.

Who needs a college degree to be a music critic? I can be one right now!!!

As you can see, I’m about to take my blog to a different direction. To those who have been paying attention, this site isn’t just about me at all, this site is here to entertain all of you. That’s why, I’m here. I’m hoping this site will have a big future in supporting unsigned bands & artists around the states, and around the world. I’m always looking for new talent to discover and support. Just to tell you one thing, I’m not trying to compete with other local blogs and other local music promoters like Crumbs, Capital Underground, Nippertown, etc. The goal here is to discover new talent and to help promote music. Not just local bands around my area, everywhere in the world. Help unsigned acts get a little more exposure. This can even be for indie and major label acts too, if I can get lucky enough to get ’em somehow.

I’ve already gotten a few responses coming in from unsigned acts all over the world.

I’m not always about myself when it comes to music. I’m very supportive of other bands & artists, and this is my way of showing my support for unsigned music. New section made for my site, “Bands & Artist Reviews”.

Lets hope this will be successful and get bigger as time goes along. Once in a blue moon, bands & artists will mail me free albums by regular mail or send me a video to review, and I’ll gladly do that. Hopefully, bands and artists will send me stuff a lot more in the future. One thing to keep in mind though, I won’t be selective or picky to review things. I won’t ignore the submissions I won’t like. I’ll be willing to review everything that comes my way. I won’t be a nasty & mean critic like Simon Cowell and others. I plan to be a nice & friendly one. If I don’t like something I hear, I’ll just be nice about it as best as possible.

I think the music world needs something like this, and this will be good. It’s gonna be fun for you to discover new talent you never heard of, and that’s the point of this. Getting heard and getting discovered.
