Will be bringing my official music website back…

Soon I’ll be making a new separate “official” website for my music promotion only. That way I won’t confuse the promoters and booking agents with this “entertainment” site. I will bring my official music website back soon. I’ll buy a domain name for it and all that. I’m not giving up this site, I’ll be running both sites at the same time, it’s just that it’s a smart move to keep my music promotion separate from this site. I’m going to think of a plan soon. I will probably bring my “kevbrockmusic.com” domain name back.

Ignoring negativity in local music…

During my last musical run in the Capital District’s music scene, I’ve had my ups & downs. I’ve had good gigs and some bad gigs, like all musicians. I went through negativity and the egos of other musicians tried to put me down in the music scene. I’ve played gigs from about 2006 – 2008 and then stopped for a long while. A hiatus. I took time off from playing music to improve my guitar playing skills and vocals. I also took a long break to get into fitness & bodybuilding.

I’ve learned a lot of lessons through my musical adventure during my last run. When you get out playing, you’ll have to learn that you’ll get a mix of haters & fans. You have to ignore those haters & doubters completely. You can’t let the negativity & drama bring you down. I kind of admit it that I kind of let it bring me down the last time, but not this time. I’m going to be a tough guy, the next time I start playing gigs again this year. From this point forward, I’m only going to be caring about my music and not care about what anybody thinks.

Yes, you’ll get yourself trapped in ego clashing with other bands at shows. Yes, you’re going to get ripped off and put down by club owners/booking agents. Yes, you’ll get plenty of people pretending to like your music when in reality they don’t (you’ll find out soon enough). Yes, you’ll get all kinds of people laughing at you about your success and dreams of music, you’ll get called delusional and all that stuff.

You can’t let any of this stuff bring you down. You have to be confident and be a tough guy. Be above that negative stuff. If music is what like you to do and what you do as a passion, you shouldn’t have to give up because people don’t like what you do. Who cares. People attack you because it’s jealousy and ego.

You can’t be defensive of yourself toward the critics. I made that mistake before and won’t do it again. You can’t be self destructive. You only care about you, your music, and your supporters. I may not have a big following with my music yet, but I do have loyal fans who stuck with me after all this time. Believe it or not.

I’m coming back to music. Play a couple of gigs this Spring/Summer, hit some open mics, write some new songs, and hopefully record a new demo. I have a gig booked for this Summer and will announce it publicly soon whenever they give me the “ok” to start promoting the gig.

This is my facebook fan page, as I will use that for my music site to announce news, promote gigs and projects, all that stuff. Yes, the Brock has finally returned to music.

Would I ever make a professionally made music video someday???

This seems to be pretty popular with unsigned and indie bands these days. Making professionally MTV/VH1 styled like videos. So the question you maybe wondering is, would I ever make one? I’ve said it before a long long time ago, no. I don’t think I’ll ever make a music video to my songs. Why? Simply because I hate music videos. I only liked music videos in the 80’s hair metal and 90’s grunge music era’s, but other than that, music videos are just silly and pointless. I never understood bands acting in a music video, lip synching to your own singing like if it was a staged musical or something.

If you wanted my music on video, you would see me video taping my “live” performances. I don’t need to feel like a rock star with a MTV/VH1 styled video, do I? I don’t live in this rock star fantasy world. I just want to play music as a passion, that is all.

A lot of Albany bands seem to be making these kind of videos these days, so I thought I would rant about it. They maybe nice material to get your music heard and get your name out there, but honestly, you don’t need music videos to get your name out there. I always saw music videos as a way to feed in your ego even more.

Just let your music speak for itself. I’ve never been a hit “single” kind of guy.

Cool Video: A band called, The Jims, covers one of my tunes…

I wake up this morning and I get this tweet from this band, called the Jims, and they announced they covered one of my original tunes. A tune called, “The Nightmare Has Begun Today”, a song I wrote. I’m very flattered they did this. This is an idea of what my songs are supposed to be like in a full band and it’s what my songs would sound like, punk. As you all know, punk and hard rock is my favorite genre. That’s the kind of stuff I would be playing when I get my own band going. These guys did a nice job. I’m very impressed.

This makes me want to get my own band going. Great work guys!

I think this tune would be a great intro for my videoblogs.

New original song: “Egyptian Freedom”

When I say I’m going to start writing songs about stuff that goes on in the news from this point on, I really meant what I said. Here’s another topical song, titled, “Egyptian Freedom”, and you guess it, the song’s about the controversial protest in Cairo, Egypt. The song needed to be angry and pissed off, so I made it a straight up rock song. Song still needs work but it’s just a draft and an idea.

I’ll edit in the lyrics soon. Enjoy.

The secret to improvising on guitar…

The reason I haven’t played any live shows in a long time ’cause I really wanted to improve my talent. Improve my craft of music. I wanted to learn to improve everything. My guitar playing, singing, and even the lyric writing. I want to improve the all around musicianship. So I took the time to learn some theory, ear training and lead guitar playing. Trying to get better at all those.

The thing with improvising on the guitar is, the only way to do it well and master the art of improvising is having a really good ear. That’s the only way, period. I’ve been practicing a lot of ear training. Trying to memorize the sound of each note on the guitar, by singing along to it and memorizing it in my head. Tuning the guitar by ear without an electronic tuner is also good practice. All this stuff is coming along well. I still have a lot to learn and lots to practice, but slowly getting better and getting easier.

I really want to get a band soon or at least play with other musicians, ’cause playing with other people helps you become better too.

It’s a big possibility that I could make a comeback to the live music scene this Spring/Summer. I want to be playing some new songs and new cover tunes. I miss playing live, I’ll get back out there soon, it’s only a matter of time.

Metal Method’s “Vocal Power” by Jim Gillette

Well, Metal Method’s “Vocal Power” DVD is here! This instructional DVD will help you learn to sing better. It’ll especially help you sing with higher range, more power & control. It’ll even help you get to those high pitch screams. I’m tired of singing like Bob Dylan or Tom Petty. It’s time to start taking my singing seriously now. I’ll start these lessons tomorrow. I can never get to those “high pitch” notes in my singing. This DVD should help me do that. It’ll take a lot of practice and dedication though.
