My original song, “Evil Fred”…

This song has always been one of my most popular songs. My original song, “Evil Fred” that I wrote sometime back in 2005/2006. I’ve always looked at that song as my anthem. That song was and still is my “Stairway To Heaven” if you know what I mean. Back in the old myspace days, I think the song got somewhere around 1,000 – 5,000 plays can’t exactly remember but it was somewhere around there. Whenever live versions of the song surfaces youtube, the song would get a decent number of views there. I remember years back when I performed for a local TV music show (the whole performance is in my youtube account, youtube Kev Brock “Groovin’ On”) and I performed several songs on it. Only one song was going to get selected to be aired for local TV and what song ended up getting picked? You betcha it was, “Evil Fred”. If you have talked to other musicians and ask them what their favorite Kev Brock song is, chances are they are gonna say “Evil Fred”. Sometimes other supporters still talk to me about that song to this day. “Evil Fred” even got mentioned when I won one of the Metroland Best Of’s years ago.

With that being said, I really shouldn’t give up the song. I just get so tired of it, ya know? Played it at every single gig of mine in the past. I don’t see how bands and artists put up with playing the same songs at every gig. I always liked to switch it up some.

I shouldn’t give up on a song that helped made me what I am and if I keep pushing the song out there, “Evil Fred” could help make me an even bigger artist than before — I’m not trying to sound egotistical here.

If I recorded a home video of me performing it on youtube… it has the potential to be big there and might go “viral”. That’s why I never recorded a home video of me performing that song for youtube ’cause the song is very special to me. I think I’m gonna post a video of me performing “Evil Fred” on a home video for youtube. Could the song get a million views or over?

I’ve been messing around with “Evil Fred” for the past couple of days trying to make the song a little different. Now that I can sing a little better, I could probably sing it better vocally too.

I’ll bring my older hits back for the upcoming internet album that I’ve been planning. My older original songs are pretty popular as well like “Mr. Tough Guy”, “Time Bomb”, “The Dark War”, etc. It’s just that “Evil Fred” is my biggest song. I maybe getting real tired of these songs, I shouldn’t leave them behind.

I still wanna write a bunch of new songs too, though. I gotta move forward and not backwards, ya know?

People today may have forgotten about “Evil Fred” and most people today haven’t even heard the song yet. I’m about to bring that song back in a huge way.

I don’t know how I came up with the song. It just came to me. That’s the first original song that I wrote where I did finger style guitar on. I wanted to write an original song about a serial killer on the loose… kind of like a Black Sabbath thing. Black Sabbath was an inspiration for the song as well. I wanted the song to be dark and scary.

I’ll bring it back soon in a youtube video of me performing it and I’ll re-record the song in garageband and make it “downloadable” for everyone.

The reason I wanna do a live-stream internet acoustic show sometime in the future…

For a long time now, I have been planning a live-stream internet acoustic show. Some of you may ask why would I want to perform a show on the internet instead of a live music venue? Well, the reason is so that my supporters (notice that I try not to call them, “fans”) who are not in the area can have an opportunity to see me live. I know that I have a few supporters from other states and other cities. I even have supporters in the UK from a city called Nottingham (it’s true)!!! How did I get supporters from the UK? Well to keep a long story short, way back in 2005, I opened for the Erotics and a band from the UK called the Teenage Casket Company in Troy. That’s how people from Nottingham started supporting me and they stayed loyal to me to this day which is awesome and flattering. The Nottingham people really dig my music and this is another reason why I want to do this internet show is for those UK’ers ’cause I know they’ll be all over it.

Even though, I have a tough time trying to get noticed in the Capital Region with my music, I still am able to get loyal supporters from out of the area so I’m fine with that.

You see, my music doesn’t have to be for the Capital Region. It’s welcome for everyone to enjoy. Doesn’t matter where you’re from. It doesn’t matter if you’re from Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, the UK or anywhere in the world.

I would like to do an internet live-stream show on a regular basis like one show a month. I’ll do a mix of both originals and covers. It’ll be like a live-show. It may not be live in person but the internet is still like a live audience anyways, right? I can call it an internet gig.

Like most musicians, I would love to get heard more and get more people to enjoy my stuff as well. I understand I need to let the music speak on it’s own and that’s what I’m doing. I’m trying to write better music the best I can as you can see. I’m hoping the internet album and the live-internet show will be pretty big. I’ll be the internet musician and that’s the plan.

I’m committed to this project and will make it happen.

More on “Speak A Little Loudly” song…

When I heard “Speak A Little Loudly” song in my head, I heard it as a gospel song. Can you tell it’s kind of gospel like a little bit? It was never meant to be a religious song, the lyrics weren’t but the music is kind of close to it. When I heard the song in my head, I visioned as a very large church choir singing the song so I tried to match it as best as possible. Someday, I will make that happen… collaborate with a choir or a large group of singers at least. I think that will be amazing.

Be warned, people. You’re gonna hear a lot more similar songs like this.

I wanna write original music that has been inspired by my favorite artists: Johnny Cash, Bowie, Neil Young, Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. They are big influences.

I was serious about writing more family friendly music that everyone can listen to and it’s happening. This is only the beginning with original music.

Yeah, I’m planning an internet-only album and thinking it maybe up to about 20 songs. Stay tuned.

Original song: Speak A Little Loudly

Another new original. Spent all day recording this. Think I got the vocals to sound better this time around. I think what happened the last time is that I was singing pretty close to the mic and I had to back away from it. Should sound much better for you this time, I hope.

Enjoy this new song called, “Speak A Little Loudly”. As you can hear I’m going nuts with my own backup vocals… so much fun to do! I’ll be doing a lot of that for my songs.

Lyrics here:

“Speak A Little Loudly”

Ooooh, where do you think you’re going?
I’m not done with you yet.
OOooh, please don’t stop this discussion…
and you didn’t win.

CHORUS:
Can you speak a little loudly?
I didn’t quite hear you.
Can you settle down a little?
I don’t quite fear you.
Lets just get along.

Ooooh, I see you ain’t done yet.
You just won’t give up.
Ooooh, please stop right now.
You just just keep going.

Repeat Chorus

Bridge:
Would you give up?
You have nothing to say.
Think I pretty much won
because you’re walking away.

Repeat Chorus 2x’s

OOooohhh, speak a little loudly (repeatedly ’til fade)

I’m already starting to get requests from other musicians wanting me to join their bands or collaborate on something… which is kind of flattering…

Whenever you start to get other musicians wanting to form a band with you or want you to join them, does that say something about your talent? I never had this before. Musicians wanting me to play music with them after me uploading all those songs to the internet. Maybe I do have what it takes to play in a rock n’ roll band? I got two different requests which is pretty cool. When you get that, it’s letting you know you are a musician and can be something special. Other musicians do take you seriously. Not trying to be egotistical about it… just trying to make a clear point.

Goals with songwriting…

I think 2014 will be the year for my comeback to music. Gonna write a bunch of originals to make ’em exclusively for the internet. How many songs do I plan to write in 2014? As many as I can come up with. I wanna take songwriting more seriously next time around. Try to make my songs “professionally” written and recorded too. I wanna write with more heart and passion. Have more confidence in my songwriting.

The reason I’m going to the folk/rock direction ’cause that genre seems to get more respect than other types of music. People seem to be into the folk, country, bluegrass thing more. I wanna write songs in that direction. Kind of like a Neil Young, CSNY, and Simon & Garfunkel thing, ya know? You can hear a lot of that influence in that latest song, “Leave This Place”.

Will I play these new songs live at gigs in 2014? I’m gonna try. Gonna try to get a gig at Caffe Lena again and maybe try to get a gig at the Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs. I’ll try to play a few gigs but they will be more locally like around the Saratoga area. I think I’ll stay away from playing gigs in Albany ’cause it’s too far travelling.

I wanna put my music out there more and have a plan to do it.

I’m always trying to improve my songwriting, singing and guitar playing to get better. I wanna focus on the singing in these new songs. Make the singing “good” next time around.

Now that I can make clean sounding tracks online… new batch of originals for 2014 for sure!!!

Now that I can finally make studio quality recordings… I’ll be able to get back to writing and recording originals. Make a homemade acoustic demo. I’ll make  the next demo album and make ’em downloadable for absolutely no cost.

I’m gonna try to make my next batch of originals really good. Make the songs have more heart and passion. As you heard with the “Leave This Place” song which is a song I’m proud of… I’m heading toward the folk music direction. I’ll still throw in some rock n’ roll too.

I promise new originals will be coming in 2014 for sure. I kind of wanna get myself back out there… doing the music thing again. Maybe even play a few live shows ’cause I miss performing live too.

This won’t stop me from doing cover songs, though. Once again it’s important to do both covers and originals. So I’ll find time to do both. Goal in 2014… concentrate on making music and focusing on it.

I wanna try to make original songs that everybody can listen to. I’m gonna try and stay away from the dark & controversial stuff. I kind of want to make family friendly music so people of all styles and ages can listen to my music.

I won’t make people pay for my music. Music should be free and I’ll always stand by it.
