I usually hate, “Study finds…” articles on the internet ’cause most of them are complete bullshit but I actually agree with this one! Finally, a “study finds…” that is actually pretty truthful. This study finds that there have been more gun violence in PG-13 movies more than R rated films these days. It has tripled since the 1950’s.
More on the story, here.
Yes, I have noticed that gun violence in PG-13 films has been on the rise in this day and age. Why? I have a few observations that I think why that is…
1) Kids don’t care to see PG-13 comedies and dramas anymore. They want to see violent movies just as much as the adult movie fans do. They find comedies and drama boring so they start seeing action movies instead. I wouldn’t blame it on video games or their parents… I would blame it on Hollywood, all the way. Hollywood controls America what to watch. They want to give kids every opportunity to see violent films and making violent movies with the PG-13 is just their sneaky way of allowing kids to see violent films. Violent films is what people want to see and that what makes Hollywood the big money.
2) Hollywood is exploiting the gun violence that goes on around America and since these real life gun tragedies get so huge in the media. This is what makes Hollywood keep the violence going in PG-13 movies. Controversy sells, that’s the trick here.
It’s sad that people don’t wanna see serious films anymore. I’m talking serious films like drama based on real life events or history kind of films. Nobody wants to see that stuff. Everybody wants to see violent action-packed movies… that’s why that genre is so huge. Horror films are becoming a dying industry because of it. Nobody wants to see romantic movies anymore either (with the exception of the Twilight/50 Shades franchise but that’s a different story).
Look, I like violent and action-packed movies myself, yo. Action movies is what I grew up on but we need a variety of films here. It used to be that action movies came out during the spring/summer time but when the fall/winter comes, they’ll start showing all the serious dramas. It’s not like that anymore. There are violent action films all year-round now. It’s crazy.
To make a simple point, nobody wants to see serious movies like “Lincoln” or “42”… these days everyone wants to see stuff like “Transformers”, “Jason Bourne”, and all of these super-hero flicks.
I like action movies, yes but I like to watch all kinds of movies. I watch everything: action, horror, drama, comedy, thrillers, etc. I just like a good movie no matter the genre.
Hollywood is going to keep making violent movies as long as it helps make them the money. I’ve been paying attention to Hollywood for years now and it’s interesting how it changes. Not only that everybody is obsessed with violent movies… they are also obsessed with 3D… reboots and remakes.
While I am a big movie buff and go to the movies pretty often… I’m kind of bothered at how Hollywood is going right now.
