
Bono announced on the official U2 website, U2.com, that the band U2 plans to go back to their old school rock n’ roll sound they had back in the early 80’s and 90’s. The band wants to take a step away from their electronica and pop/rock stuff they’ve done the last 4 albums and is planning to go back to their old roots. Bono compares the sound to the new album to “The Joshua Tree” up to “Achtung Baby”.

If you read that article more carefully you will see that Bono is not talking about going back to any old school sound. He is talking about the kind of innovation that marked the transition from Joshua Tree to Achtung Baby. Not the sound but the idea of departure.
