This guy, Chris Sligh, a former Idol, wrote the most intelligent blog about the music industry I’ve ever seen. I totally agree with him on everything, 100%.
Read his blog here:

He’s just giving the Idols a reality check about them thinking they will be a star. Pretty intelligent writing.
I don’t play music ’cause I want fame and fortune, I just play music as a hobby and something I have as a passion. I just play guitar and sing songs just for the love of it, nothing more.
In local music, sorry to say but it’s true, even local musicians would have to get out of their delusions and face reality as well. Most musicians around the Capital District are doing it like if this was a popularity contest, most musicians around this area are obsessed with trying to be established and well known. Not worrying about local fame too much, and concentrating on your music mostly is what’s most important, the way I look at it.
There are too many bands and artists that are obsessed with doing radio interviews, articles with newspapers, etc. That stuff is nice but I never worried about any of that. I just cared about playing my guitar and singing.

When I read that blog of his the other day I thought “That Kev Brock guy on the Internet sounds just like this famous guy!”
He’s absolutely right. They spit you out when they’re done with you like you are garbage!
I still like that Simon guy, though.
When I used to blog about local music in the past, I kind of did the same thing about local bands and musicians. Try to give a realistic look at their careers. I get mixed opinions on this stuff, some hate me for it, and some loved me for it.
This Chris Sligh guy is totally right that your family members aren’t true fans, they don’t count as fans. Your best friends don’t even count as fans either. If you gets fans at your shows with people you don’t even know that support your music that’s when you know, you’re going somewhere in your music.
When I read that guy’s blog, I too thought, “this Chris Sligh guy sounds like me”.
Did I ever feel bad about ranting about local music giving bands a reality check about music here? No. I felt proud doing it. Will do it again if I want to, but I’ll just be repeating myself.
Unsigned bands and artists really do have some of the craziest delusions, thinking they are all rock stars and stuff.
