Lou Reed’s career is proof that critics are idiotic. Do you know how many times Lou released an album that got bashed…only for them to hail it as a classic about 20 years later? I think with characters like Lou, personal bias is involved because, if you have ever heard or seen or read an interview with him, then you will learn that he can be a difficult asshole. (In fact, former Velvet Underground bandmate John Cale thinks Reed is a total dick.) So I think some of their hatred for his personality comes out when they review an album that has his name on it. But then, years later, for some reason they soften up and say, “Okay, he may be a jerk…but I have to give the guy credit: he made some damn good music.” In my humble opinion, I prefer his Velvet material to any of his solo work, but that’s just my musical taste. I’m sure he has some solo stuff that I haven’t heard yet that WOULD appeal to me.
