My goal as a guitarist is to fully master the instrument. Become more professionally skilled. Not really a virtuoso but my goal is to become a great guitar player. I have been trying to get there for the past 19 years I have been playing.
I feel that I got good enough at rhythm guitar. I have a good sense of timing with the metronome now. I think I totally understand… timing, rhythm and tempo. A long time ago, I used to hate playing along with a metronome ’cause it used to be so hard but now I love it. Playing along with a metronome is a piece of cake now. The more you practice, the easier it becomes.
While I feel I’m a good enough rhythm guitarist, I feel I still have a lot of learning to do on lead guitar and I’m doing all I can to improve that as well. I practice every day on lead guitar. Trying to become great at guitar solos like all of my guitar heroes: Hendrix, Satriani, Page, etc. I wanna be able to play like them but add my own style to it as well.
It takes years and years of practice and hard work to get great at guitar. I just wanna take my guitar playing to the next level. Become more advanced. I’m studying music theory too and I think that’s important for me to do is to memorize all of this music theory stuff and understand it all. Music theory isn’t that hard to learn either. Getting better at ear training and improv too. I wanna become an improv musician. Be able to play what I hear in my head is my goal.
I appreciate that there are a lot of bands and solo artists writing songs with guitar but many of them are forgetting one thing. Great guitar playing. Sure, it’s okay to throw a bunch of chords together and write a little song with it but if they take the guitar playing more seriously… that’ll take your songwriting to the next level.
I’m trying to get better. I wanna become a guitar great and it just takes a lot of time to get there. Still have a lot of learning to do.
