“Boyhood” brief review…

Just finished watching the movie, “Boyhood” via Itunes Movie rental and it was a pretty long movie.
Hate to say this but the movie was just okay. It wasn’t really anything all that special so I never really understood all the praise??? This isn’t the first “coming of age” movie as I’m sure there are many others out there that are a lot better. I thought “Boyhood” was kind of overrated and there are plenty of drama films that are kind of similar. Richard Linklater is a talented film maker but this film was pretty disappointing and I expected something better.

I was impressed with Patricia Arquette’s role though… she did the best acting job in the whole cast and I think she’s gonna get an Oscar for that performance. That was the only thing I liked about the film.
With that being said, I thought the film was slightly boring. I hope it doesn’t get BEST PICTURE at the Oscars and it’s probably gonna anyway. As I was watching the movie “Boyhood”, I felt like watching Parenthood on NBC.

I still say Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” was my favorite film of 2014. “Boyhood” was alright, it’s just something I wouldn’t watch over and over again, ya know?

I would give “Boyhood” a score of 2 out of 5 as in “okay”. It wasn’t anything all that great.

Watched “The Purge” last night and I thought the film was great!!!

Last night, I finally got around to watching “The Purge”, the latest horror film starring Ethan Hawke. The reviews of this film were mixed but did people watch the same film I did? I thought the film was really good and didn’t find anything wrong with it.

The story takes place in the 2022 in which the United States has become a nation “reborn”. The new United States now has a New Founding Fathers of America and because of it… crime and unemployment is very low because the new government started a yearly thing called, ‘The Purge”. “The Purge” is a yearly 12 hour period where murder would be legalized during those 12 hours. During those 12 hours, law enforcement and emergency services are shut down. “The Purge” happens once a year. James Sanding is a rich man who lives in Los Angeles with his family and he got rich selling home security systems. During “The Purge”, James tries his best to protect his family from a group of masked people and a man known as the Polite Leader (pictured above).

Many are saying that the script to this film was pretty bad and the characters were bad as well. I’m like, really? I thought the script and the characters were fine to me. It’s just a movie, that’s all it is. I actually thought the story was pretty realistic and something like this could happen in real life. What would America be like if there was a time where murder would be completely legalized for a day? I thought the film was kind of creepy and had me at the edge of my seat.

I thought Ethan was good in this movie like he always is good. I really liked Rhys Wakefield playing the Polite Leader too… he was a badguy you wanted to hate. I thought the movie ended pretty good too. Nothing wrong with the film at all. I refuse to get into details about the plot ’cause I don’t wanna give too many spoilers.

You see, when I watch movies… I don’t go by other peoples opinions. I go by my own opinion alone. I’ll like a film whether everyone hates it or not. I won’t hate a film ’cause Roger Ebert or other movie fans hated it. I don’t follow popular opinion.

I thought “The Purge” was one of the best films of 2013 and I really mean that too. I would probably add the BluRay of this film to my collection pretty soon. I’m already looking forward to seeing what they’re gonna do with the sequel too. “The Purge” is mysterious for now but we’ll know more information on how the new United States started the yearly “Purge” in the later sequels.

I respect this film ’cause they did something different and challenging. Something original for once. This is a nice idea they’re doing.

Netflix Pick (DVD rental): Sinister (w/ Ethan Hawke)

Last night, I watched the new horror film, “Sinister” starring, Ethan Hawke.

It tells the story of the true-crime writer named, Ellison Oswalt, who moves his family into a home where a horrific murder happened in the backyard. Ellison’s family — who has a wife, a son, and daughter — doesn’t know about the crime. Ellison moved his family to the home to do research to write a novel about it. His novel writing career is in a career slump and he wants to write a book on the tragedy at this home, hoping that will make him a successful writer again. As he learns more and more about the crime that happened years ago at the home, he becomes even more obsessed with it and works on the research for hours & hours. Ellison finds footage of tapes that you would watch on an 8mm camera (pictured above). Each footage on the tapes has different murders that were disturbing and graphic; however, in each tape, he finds the face of a unique figure he never saw before. As a result, his family tries to talk him out of what he is doing, and things in the home get much worse after that.

That’s enough of the plot. On with my thoughts of the movie. Honestly, I thought this was one of the best horror films of the last 10 years.  I think this movie, “Sinister”, and the new, “Evil Dead”, movie were the best horror films ever made in over a decade. “Sinister” really was that good. It is true horror at it’s finest. True supernatural horror. The movie was well-filmed and well-made. It felt like a horror movie all the way through, and it didn’t rely on gore too much. There is gore but not a whole lot. The less gore, the scarier a horror film gets. “Sinister” was actually scary as hell and I was a little creeped out at some parts. Especially, the film’s ending which was a big shocker I never saw coming. This was Ethan’s best acting too.

I think I’m gonna get this film on Blu-Ray sometime ’cause it will be a great film to watch on Halloween. If you like creepy ghost movies, then this is the film to see. It really was a great movie, I was impressed with it.
