Film Review: Zero Dark Thirty

Starring: Jessica Chastain, Kyle Chanlder, Joel Edgerton

Directed by: Katherine Bigelow

Today, I finally went and saw, “Zero Dark Thirty”, and here is my review…

Plot/synopsis: The story focuses on a woman named, Maya, who is a CIA operative. She is the one who discovered the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden who is responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Now the Seal Team 6 is sent out to hunt or kill the al-qaeda, leader.

Critics gave this movie positive reviews, calling it a masterpiece and saying this is the best film of 2012. The film also won many awards and got nominated for “Best Picture”, at the Oscars. After seeing the film finally, I look at all the good things the film has gotten, and I’m like really? The film was okay but wasn’t all that special. The writing was kind of a mess, and I don’t like the casting of Jessica Chastain. She pretty much ruined the movie. I found her pretty annoying and thought she was a bad actress.

The torture scenes that people were complaining about, weren’t all that gritty. Why attack this movie for the torture scenes when there are thousands of other war/politics based movies with torture in them? The torture in other war movies can be even more graphic than this one, for example, the movie, “Apocalypse Now”, and many others.

The only positive was that Katherine did a good job with the Bin Laden raid at his compound. That was done okay, but, it seems she stole a lot of material from the “No Easy Day” book. On top of all this, I’m not really sure if the Bin Laden raid is accurate from what was told in the media. Seal Team 6, is supposed to keep this stuff private and anonymous, so I’m pretty sure the stuff told in “No Easy Day” and the “Zero Dark Thirty” movie wasn’t the full story.

I thought this was kind of a boring and slow movie. I’m glad I waited on “Zero Dark Thirty” for my Top 15 Best Films of 2012 list, ’cause this film isn’t worth of that list, anyways. I think I’ll call this film, an “Okay” movie. I did like Kyle Chandler’s performance in it, though, the former, “Friday Night Lights” star. I’m sure Hollywood will make more Bin Laden movies, so hopefully, they can make a better one.

Score for “Zero Dark Thirty” = ** (Two stars as in “Okay”)
