Film Review: “Katy Perry: Part of Me”

Starring: Katy Perry

Directed by: Dan Cutforth

Today, I’ve seen Katy Perry’s documentary film, “Part of Me” in theater, and here is my review.

Plot/Synopsis: The main focus of the film is that it tells the life story of iconic pop star, Katy Perry, who got her shot at fame with her hit song, “I Kissed A Girl”.

I’m a really big Katy Perry fan, and I’m not sure why. She is addicting to me for some weird reason. It’s not just her beautiful looks and her big cleavage. It’s who she is as a person. She has a personality which makes you feel like you’ve already known her for years. Plus, her music rocks. I’m a fan of her music and I’m not ashamed of it either. When I first heard about Katy Perry, I didn’t know much about her before I saw this film. This film has pretty much everything you need to know about, Katy Perry.

She has been largely accused of being a fake manufactured pop star by the industry, but this film wants you to prove that she is the real deal. She did all the work herself. She definitely did not become famous over night. Before her pop star days, she started off being a Christian singer/songwriter. She started off being an acoustic singer/songwriter performing small clubs and cafes before her fame. Before her Katy Perry name, she released a Christian album under her real name, Katy Hudson, back in 2001 before she changed into the pop star that we all love. Since that albums failure, she was inspired by Alanis Morissette, and she wanted to get into the rock & pop genre. So she hooked up with producer, Glen Ballard, to work on an album, but she kept getting dropped from a few different labels including Def Jam Records, Columbia, etc. She finally got one of her songs called, “Simple”, to be included for the, “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” movie. Later on, Katy finally got a record deal with Capitol Records, in which she released her debut album as Katy Perry titled, “One of the Boys”, which was obviously a huge hit. Then she released, “Teenage Dream”, also a hit album. Her fame wasn’t easy as many people claimed it was. It was a difficult road for her to get there too.

The film would show stuff about Katy Perry performing on stage, and they would even show behind the scene stuff on the tour. They would film backstage stuff. The film had interviews with her stage crew, managers, family, etc. Even Russel Brand made a few appearances, of course. Speaking of Russel Brand, they had to bring up his divorce with Katy Perry. The film got pretty emotional and sad, when Katy found out that Russel filed for divorce, and she was heartbroken toward the end of it. It really showed that Katy can be human and real. The film wanted to show people that she really loved, Russel. I believe they also filmed those scenes ’cause Katy wanted to publicly show Russel how heartbroken she was. Remember, Russel was the one who filed divorced on Katy. Katy wanted to stay married to him. Katy crying and being all emotional in the movie seemed like it was real to me (not sure if it was acting).

This is actually one of the best music documentaries I’ve seen. I was pretty surprised by it. The film was heartfelt and it was enjoyable to see. Makes me a fan of Katy Perry even more. I also like her being the Candy Queen. Did you know that her brunette hair is not her real hair? I’m sure everyone knows that, it is actually a wig, of course. The film even showed hair stylists putting the wig on her in her dressing room. Her natural hair is actually, blond. Look it up yourself. This was a pretty inspiring and moving film. I respect Katy Perry even more. She has a lot of haters and doubters, but sooner or later, I think they will have a change of heart with her soon, once they realize that Katy Perry is a special performer and woman. I’m looking forward to all of her upcoming albums. Katy Perry is great.

You don’t have to be a die hard fan to see this film. If you’re curious about her and want to learn more about her and her music, this would be the film to see for everyone.

Score for Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” = **** (4 stars as in “Excellent”)

Cool Video: Katy Perry performs at her old high school where she graduated from…

Katy Perry put on a free concert at her old high school where she graduated from. She performed a small set with her band at, Dos Pueblos High. Listening to her singing, this is pretty much proof that she doesn’t lip synch. It sure sounds live to me. She looks like an entertaining performer. If she does a US tour and comes around Albany, I’d certainly be there to see her in concert!

Cool Video: Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”…she’s my new obsession!

Have you ever had one of those moments, when you are introduced to an artist you never heard of before and you think to yourself, “Eh, she’s probably some pop artist?” Well I felt the same way when I first heard about Katy Perry. The more I listen to Katy’s music, the more her music grows on me and I begin to like it more. Now I’m a big Katy Perry fan.

The haters can say whatever they want about her, her music is really great. I really like this tune a lot. It’s got a great melody, good chorus. It’s actually pretty tight too. I can say a lot of things about this great song but maybe I’ll do that in another post another time. This is a beautiful song, like it or not.

I’m not into pop and commercial music too much, but Katy is one artist I can listen to. I don’t care if people think I’m weird for listening to her. I like whatever music I wanna like! I could probably cover this song myself on the guitar, I don’t think I will because listening to the lyrics, the song is definitely telling a story from a woman’s perspective, so no, I won’t cover it. I’ll just have fun listening to it. I wouldn’t call Katy Perry a guilty pleasure either ’cause I’m not ashamed of being a fan at all.

CD Review: Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”

So I finally bought Katy Perry’s new album, “Teenage Dream” from Itunes. Yes, she’s a pop artist…but she’s one of the good ones. When I listened to this record, it really didn’t feel like a pop record to me. It is still kind of rock n’ roll in a way, giving it an 80’s feel of new wave music. Stuff that would you would hear at the boardwalk near the beach at the ocean. While the song, “California Gurls” is a mainstream hit, yes, there are better songs on the album, like the title track, “Teenage Dream” is a great song. The whole record is great. She’s got a unique way of writing current music. The songs on the album are actually pretty tight. Energetic. Her singing is not Celine Dion or Barbara Streisand, but with this album, she proves that she doesn’t have to sing like those artists. Katy Perry is addicting to listen to because she feels like old school music. I hate most mainstream pop music, but for some reason, I keep listening to Katy. She has a romantic feel to her songs that makes men want to listen to her stuff. Her songs makes you feel like you’re in a relationship with her when you listen to her songs. I don’t care what the haters say about Katy Perry ’cause she’s a talented artist. I’m liking her more than Lady Gaga in fact. Katy’s the better songwriter. I need to listen to some pop music for some fun music to workout to at the gym with my Ipod. Katy is indeed good workout music. For those who don’t like pop or Katy Perry, I’d suggest you give this album a listen. You might like it yourself. You don’t have to like pop  music to like Katy Perry. If you’re a rock or metal fan, she’ll make anybody get into her music. That’s how powerful this woman’s music is. I’m going to be listening to this one quite a lot.

Thought: I heart Katy Perry, there I said it!!!

I am not afraid to say that I am a big fan of Katy Perry. I hate mainstream pop music like everyone else. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Once in a while, a very talented pop artist will come around and Katy is one of them. I enjoy Lady Gaga and next, I fall in love with Katy Perry’s music. I mostly listen to rock, metal, and progressive music…but sometimes I need to listen to other genres to shake things up a bit. Get in a different mood ’cause you don’t want to be listening to loud guitars all the time. Whenever I get tired of listening to guitar rock for the day, I will listen to something else. I’ll either listen to pop, rap, and country. I’ll even listen to blues, jazz and classical sometimes.

I listened to Katy Perry’s new album “Teenage Dream” in the facebook listening party today. I was pretty impressed with it. There is something about Katy’s music that draws you in. She’s got a singing voice that is much different than other pop singers out there. She sings like a rock singer almost. She doesn’t sing like Celine Dion or Mariah Carey with a powerful voice, that’s not Katy. Katy sounds like herself. She maybe pop but she is definitely a rock artist in some unique way. She has great stage presence and a great look. The way she moves and performs on stage is awesome. This woman has personality and is more human than most fake pop stars out there. She plays with an actual band and not with some electronica bullshit.

Would I buy her music? Yes! Would I see her live in concert? YES!

She’s a talented artist and a talented songwriter. She is the Beach Boys of this generation, fact. The hell with Celine Dion. The hell with Mariah Cary. The hell with Rihanna, Pink, Britney Spears and all those worthless talent. It’s all about Katy Perry, man! She’s the true pop star with real talent!
