Stephen King has read the “Twilight” series by Stephenie Meyer, and get ready for some harsh criticism by the master of horror. King compared both J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer by saying, “Rowling can write, Stephenie can’t”.

As a fan of the “Twilight” series, this is hilarious coming from a guy who hasn’t written a great novel since “The Dark Tower” series and a guy who is no longer a bestselling author, sounds to me that King is a bit jealous of Stephenie’s popularity. Yeah, I’m sure Mr. King would love all the popularity that she’s getting. King should shut his mouth.
Stephenie’s a fantastic writer. He shouldn’t compare her to J.K. Rowling at all ’cause both writers have completely different styles. I’m sure Stephenie maybe a huge fan of Mr. King’s work and I’m sure his harsh critique broke her heart. His writing probably influenced her own writing as well.

Although from the authors perspective this may say ouch. From a publicity stand point it will be great for her.
All I’ve heard from others is that the Twilight series is excellent (I haven’t read any of them myself)… Getting bashed by a high profile celebrity like King isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

You’re exactly right now that I think about it dude, sometimes bad publicity makes good.
The more people talk shit, the more popular you’re making them.

Talking shit can sometimes be better publicity than being talked up.
I also forgot to say – If you do enjoy a good book, check out the event we have going on right now (top post). Sign-up and if you’d would, please help us promote it.

Well, I have to agree with Stephen. I’ve read Stephenie’ s books and they’re alright. but she can’t write at all……… Her books are like drugs. They’re not good for you, but you want some more.. I mean, there’s no substance to her books. However, I agree with his statement on J.K.Rowling. Obviously, everyone knows that J.K.Rowling is simply THE BEST!!!! She is so fantastic. She is the cream of the crop, the queen of fiction. I mean, Has stephenie even won any awards? No.. She hasn’t!

I would like to point out that the reason why Stephen King is no longer a best selling author is because he had stopped writing for a long time because of a car accident. How can you still be a best selling author when you aren’t even putting out books to the market?
And how can Mr. King be jealous of Stephenie Meyer? He has written 70 books and a lot of short stories. He has won numerous awards in the span of his He has Theatrical movies, TV movies and short movies about his work. You can go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_based_on_Stephen_King_works to see the body of work he has done. He is already at the stage of his life where he is given Lifetime Achievement Awards. So how could you even say that he is jealous? I don’t think he is that shallow.
If there is anyone who has the right to criticize then its Mr.Stephen King. I like Twilight as a guilty pleasure but I do know that Stephenie Meyer’s writing style is really bad. She’s a good story teller and she captivates a reader but she still has to improve her writing.
By the way, I’m more of a Stephen King fan than a fan of Stephenie Meyer even if I both love their books. This is the reason why I am defending Mr. King.
Good day to you.

It’s not really the debate that get’s me a bit pissy (because I never read Twilight because I hate romances), but it’s what you’re saying in your replies, brocknroll, that hits me hard. Also, I read the outlined/summarized version of the book, “Twilight”, to argue against your claims.
“These days no one knows who Stephen King is anymore.” That was possibly THE stupidest thing to say, ever. Everyone I know who has a Twilight book (too damn many for my taste) knows “The Stand” , “The Shining”, “Duma Key” , “It”, and a few have even Duma Key and some short story collections of his as well. Stephen King made a permanent mark in creative writing, a scar in literature. He will never be forgotten until reading is officially extinct, something that a vampire-romance will probably never do. This “Twilight” is all just a fad that will die eventually. Stephen King’s novels, however, will be classics and right along such great stories like “The Call of Cthulhu”, and, hell, even “Frankenstein”. Tons of teenagers can identify Pennywise the Clown just as well as a vampire played by that dude in Harry Potter.
“…’cause Stephen would prefer the gore, the sex, and being scary. Wake up, Stephen.” Wake up, Kev. If you were a fan of King, like you said you were, you must realize that those three things are symbols that usually have a bigger meaning. Such as sex, for instance. King uses it, not because he wants pornographic novels, but to use it so important characters can have a special bond that usually changes the entire situation (e.g. “It” and “The Stand”). Now, the gore and “being scary” relate to one another. The scary things in the books are used as conflicts the main characters, as a group, must overcome. They are not there simply to scare you. In most books by King, the characters defeat this evil being, giving the story a happy ending to look forward to. Why? Because Stephen King is a horror writer, but uses horror as symbolism for “evil”, which “good” must always overcome.
“As a fan of the “Twilight” series, this is hilarious coming from a guy who hasn’t written a great novel since “The Dark Tower” series and a guy who is no longer a bestselling author, sounds to me that King is a bit jealous of Stephenie’s popularity. ” That’s an opinion right there in the first sentece, after the comma. You are criticizing King’s opinion and then insult him with your own? Hypocritical much (and yes, that would make me a hypocrite as well)? And “no longer a bestselling author”? You are aware that Duma Key was a #1 bestseller, right? Before you tell others to get their facts straight, you might want to get your’s straightened out as well.
“If King is going to come out and bash another author, then the dude will have to expect some harsh criticism at his own work as well.” BEEEP. Wrong answer. Most people take King’s work incredibly seriously, always looking deeper into the story than what he writes (which is exactly what he’s aiming for). Plus, King’s stories have the greatest characterization I’ve ever seen, while, judging by the reviews oh-so-magical “Twilight” got, the characters were bland and not given any depth at all. Do you know what you call a story with characters that have no personality and no backstory? Romance.
Anyways, I’m sorry if this was a bit harsh. But I always like giving my opinions, and my facts, which sometimes others seem to miss. Also, your last statement about Twilight haters and fans, you are very wrong again. SK fans are usually J.K Rowling fans as well. Harry Potter is much more popular and well-known than a vampire named Ed, as is the protagonist named Roland Deschain. That’s two big series. In other words, King has a big crowd.

I would have to agree whole-heartedly with Stephen King. I’ve read the first Twilight book and it completely baffles me how this author is getting so much praise. Not even taking into account how Meyer has simply shat on the vampire mythos, her writing is both mundane and unconvincing. Both Bella and Edward are incredibly two dimensional characters without any flaws in the slightest bit making them incredibly unsympathetic. It seems every argument I see here is people connections that popularity is equal to talent, and that in itself is a fallacy. Just because Stephanie Meyer is making Best Sellers doesn’t mean that it is well deserved. By the way, check your facts, Stephne King is still writing Best Sellers. I’ll admit I find Stephen King himself to be a mediocre writer, but that’s mainly my personal issue with his subject matter rather than his writing abilities.
The argument that Twilight has inspired kids are reading books is completely useless when making it a reason for the writer’s talent. Like stated, popularity doesn’t mean talent. Some of the world’s greatest writers weren’t popular in their lifetime and some of the most popular writers of an era are now looked down upon in English Studies. I am glad more people are reading, even if it is something as unimaginative as Twilight. That doesn’t mean Twilight is good. Twilight is filled with nauseating quotes such as “Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. ” or “And So the lion fell in love with the lamb.” Another problem is the premise of a forbidden love between Bella and Edward, yet what makes it a forbidden love? Sure there are many who disagree with it and therefore causes enemies for Bella and Edward, but what do they have to sacrifice for it? Nothing. They end up better than when they started, in perfect happiness. Don’t even get me started on the female abuse undertones the series carries throughout the story.
If you want to see a romantic vampire story done right, watch Let The Right One In. The creator didn’t have to resort to completely destroying the vampire mythos to make coming up with a believable relationship easier.
Stephen King is absolutely right. Stephenie Meyer is a talentless hack, with no originality, no sense of plot or characterization, and absolutely no ear for prose. She’s ridiculous, and her books send absurd messages about the importance of physical beauty and basically that a girl doesn’t need an education, independent willl, or dreams of her own if she can get a beautiful, obsessive, controlling vampire husband instead.
Bella is a Mary Sue. She’s an extremely stupid person, she has absolutely no goals or dreams for her life beyond Edward, and she’s obsessed to the point where she puts herself in danger JUST SO SHE CAN HEAR HIS VOICE IN HER HEAD.
Edward – Gary Stu, abusive, controlling, NOT a romanti model. He has wild mood swings and goes from arrogant to emo to weepy in the space of one conversation – it’s like he’s constantly PMSing. He’s a creepy stalker – eavesdrops on people’s minds to see what Bella is doing, watching her sleep at night, following her around, etc.
And their “romance” is nothing but a painfully contrived infatuation that’s laughable at best. Twilight had no plot – absolutely NO plot – until the last 80 pages or so. It was just Edward and Bella acting like boring high school kids all through. And then in Breaking Dawn, Meyer breaks ALL OF HER OWN RULES so that she can basically give Bella everything she wants – there is no conflict or struggle, so all the drama is just worthless.
Meyer is a hypocrite and a hack; her luck lies in the fact that apparently she has struck upon a male fantasy model that many female readers (and, apparently, a few male readers) seem to enjoy. Nobody in the literary world takes her seriously, although the publishing world certainly does because of the money she brings in. She’s the female version of Christopher Paolini – nothing but coffee table candy, a brief craze that will sell well for a while, but will eventually be forgotten.
Oh, and Steohen King hasn’t written a good book since the Dark Tower series? Coming from a Twilight fan, that accusation is entirely without merit. Anything – absolutely ANYTHING – that King writes is worlds above Meyer’s works.
