Book reading, what do you prefer reading books digitally or hardcover/paperbacks? I prefer the old school way…

Not only that digital music has taken over CD’s, digital novels has also taken over the world of hardcover/paperbacks. Ever wonder why more and more bookstores have been going out of business as of late? It’s because everyone has been reading books digitally these days. With stuff like the Nook, Ipad, etc. I prefer reading books on paper instead of a screen. I like old school style of reading. I like to buy hardcover/paperbacks ’cause it’s nice to have a book collection and to support the author as well, most importantly.

The only time I’ll read a book on Ibooks for the Ipad, is when I want to read something that I refuse to buy at the store. For example, that’s why I bought “50 Shades of Grey” for the Ipad instead of getting it on Hardcover/Paperback.

I love used books. I love going to used bookstores, and stuff like that. Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies other than music ’cause reading books keep me inspired.

Today, I just went to a used bookstore called, “The Owl Pen” in Greenwich, which is a great little book store out of town. Took a long bike ride to get out there. Picked up 4 hardcovers today: Stephen King’s “Four Past Midnight”, Ray Bradbury “Fahrenheit 451”, William Golding “Lord of the Flies”, and James Fenimore Cooper, “The Last of the Mohicans”. I went to that store to see what they have for Stephen King hardcovers. They had several of them, but I already owned most of them. I already did own “Four Past Midnight”, but the one I had before didn’t have that cover jacket, now I do!

I’ll go back to the “Owl Pen” later this summer.

Yep, it’s pretty sad how the book industry is today. You can’t get old books in new bookstores anymore. If you want to get the old books, the best places to get them are at used bookstores, library book sales, yard sales, flea markets, etc.

The only reason, “Barnes & Noble”, is still alive and kicking is because of the Nook, period. The Nook is a best selling thing going right now. I don’t own a Nook and probably will never get one. I’ll just use my Ipad to read on Ibooks.

  1. it’s called progress. ebooks are killing paper books the same way mp3’s are killing CD’s.
The same way CD’s killed cassettes. and cassettes killed 8 tracks and vinyl. And the same way DVD’s killed VHS and film. And just like Garage Band replaces the need for real musicians with overblown egos and all their drama.

Technology is your friend. Embrace it. Love it. Enjoy it.

    1. I actually agree with you 100%.

Speaking of musicians, software like ProTools, garageband, Logic, etc., have taken over the old school way of music recording. Before the software, all we were using were piece of shit 4 track machines. I miss those days!

    2. I’m sorry but you’re viewing it completely wrong. Progress is improving something, not simply replacing it. Books are the apex of the written word. You cannot improve it. Ebooks only allow you to carry more in less space if that is your desire.

      1. True but some folks prefer to stay old school. There are some that don’t get into technology and prefer to hold a real book in their hands. I prefer to hold a real book in my hands as well, not read from a screen. The only time I would buy e-books for the Ipad if books are hard to find or I don’t really want to own the hardcover/paperback. Some still love to collect hardcover and paperback novels ’cause they love to have their own home library. I certainly do. I myself, am a book collector. Have been for years.

      2. Don’t get me wrong! I prefer hardcover books any day as it gives a more personal feel to it. I have quite a few books that range from 1870 to 1930 myself.

  2. I understand and appreciate what Nook, Kindle etc do, but there is no substitute for turning the page of a dusty old book.

    1. It’s not that I’m embarrassed buying porn publicly, as I buy porn often. It’s just that I was skeptical of the books and didn’t want to pay a lot for the hardcover. Ebooks on the Ipad are much cheaper.

  3. This goes with my other thoughts. People from the 1990’s and up seem to have lost touch with the past. If it’s not the next best electronic device then it’s useless to them. Things made today aren’t meant to last generations like they use to be, but maybe 5 – 6 years. I have a manual typewriter from the 1940’s that works as if it was made yesterday!

    1. Let me just add that I’m not against progress or computers nor anything of the like, I just don’t like the way we’re heading. Too many kids these days are taking the, “join us or get left behind”, way of thinking. To them, there is only one way of doing things.

      1. So it sounds like you’re agreeing with me on this topic, then. I totally agree that people of today’s generation has lost touch of technology. The same thing is happening in the world of music. People aren’t buying CD’s anymore and people rely on Itunes today. The internet changed everything for sure.
