Just to clarify one thing real quick, is when I said in that one post about the guitar god thing being “dead”. I’m not disrespecting guitar gods at all. When I said that the “guitar god” thing has ended, it means there is no such thing anymore. In the old days of rock n’ roll, there was such a thing called being a “guitar god” like Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Duane Allman, Clapton, Angus Young, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. The meaning of “guitar god”, no longer exists. All we’ve been getting lately in today’s mainstream are copy cats.
If there was to be another guitar god in the future to change the face of guitar playing again, that would be difficult to do ’cause everything has already been done on the guitar. If there were to be another guitar god someday, then they must create something totally original. Which will be difficult to do. I don’t think there will ever be a guitar genius that will change the world of music again, but who knows though, maybe someday, someone will invent a new sound on the guitar.
I don’t think there will be anyone out there that will change guitar history again.

I think you just aren’t listening to enough new music. There are plenty of recent players that have made some seriously huge steps in advancing guitar playing innovation
Actually, I have been listening to a lot of new music. There are still some great guitar players around, don’t get me wrong, but they are definitely not guitar gods. There is a big difference between a guitar great and a god. While there are still some great guitarists today, they are no better than the legends from the past.
Kev
Frank Zappa was a guitar god.
True that, I agree! So was Tony Iommi of Sabbath, Ritchie Blackmore, George Harrison, etc. I can list a whole bunch of ’em.
Kev
Dimebag Darrell was another one!
Kev
I don’t know if I’d put Dimebag in that group.
Why not Dime? He wass one of the all time best. Randy Rhoads was another one, can’t forget him.
Kev
Jeff Beck, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry….the list goes on!
Yep, I agree with all three of those too.
Kev
Keith Richards, Slash, The Edge (of U2), Zakk Wylde, and Al DiMeola are several more that would be considered “guitar gods”.
Kev
The Edge? He can barely play guitar.
The Edge’s best guitar playing was in the earlier days of U2, I’m talking the earlier U2 stuff like “October”, “Boy”, “Unforgettable Fire”, “The Joshua Tree”, and “Achtung Baby”, were the best U2 albums. Most of U2’s new stuff aren’t that great, except “Zooropa” and “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” were both amazing records. Edge is still a great guitarist, I wish he would write better songs with the band.
Kev
I also can’t forget Davild Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Jerry Garcia of the Dead.
Kev
If I were to think of current guitarists in today’s industry that could be considered guitar god’s, I would say Jack White and John Mayer are both pretty close to it. I’m not a fan of John Mayer’s songwriting but he’s a phenomenal blues guitarist, I’ll give him that respect.
Kev
Ouch, dude. Including Jack White just demolished your credibility 😉
+1!
Brian Setzer.
Another great one! Brian Setzer kicks fuckin’ ass! I’ve always liked him!
Kev
Paul Gilbert and Buckethead are guitar heroes. John Mayer plays generic blooze pentatonic horse manure.
