Just a few worries about David Bowie’s return…

While it’s great that Bowie is finally back, I do have a few worries about his return to music. Allow me to explain…

1st of all, he’s going to have get accepted in the music industry since he’s been gone for so long. The industry has changed ever since he’s been gone. The only people who support Bowie’s return are his die hards who have stayed loyal to him after all these years. Fans of today’s generation may have a tough time, knowing who Bowie is. I’m sure young fans today are familiar with his classic songs, but his new stuff, people won’t know about. I personally think, Bowie came back for the fans who begged him to return and he finally responded. Of course, I’m sure Bowie wants to make new fans too.

Secondly, I’m also a little worried about how his new album is going to sell. Will it be a hit record or will it be a failure? Will his new album be worth the 10 year wait?

Destiny’s Child and Justin Timberlake just announced their comeback to music today, and they just overshadowed Bowie’s comeback. That’s a perfect example of how the industry changed. Sad, but it is what it is.

Back to Bowie, honestly though, Bowie used to be big and mainstream back in the day, but I think he lost a lot of recognition during his hiatus. He’s got a lot of work to do to get it all back. It’s going to be tough for him with the way this industry is today. It’s going to be tough for him to become a best selling artist again. Could he do it with his new album? We’ll have to wait and see how it sells in the Billboard.

Again, it’s good news that Bowie is back, but I’m afraid people out there may not care anymore.

  1. “Where Are We Now” topped the singles chart in the UK a day after it’s release so I wouldn’t worry about his popularity. Remember, this was done with no publicity or marketing whatsoever prior to it’s release. We won’t see any “American Idol” or “X Factor” winners accomplishing that.

    1. That’s in the UK, though. He’s extremely popular in the UK ’cause that’s his home country originally. His popularity may be different over here, though. Just my 2cents.

    1. I’m sure Bowie’s comeback album will be successful but it’ll be tough to make it a no. 1 record since Pop & rap are a dominate force in the industry, right now. That’s kind of the point I’m trying to make. People in America, don’t care about rock music anymore.

  2. I think you’re all missing the point. David Bowie has always been clear that he writes and performs music for himself – not trying to impress others (exception to “Tonight” and “Never Let me Down.” While any of us to have been lucky enough to attend a Bowie concert, he is certainly quite the performer; however, more importantly, Bowie creates art – in fact he creates new genres of art. By far, he has been the most influential artist on the 21st pop/rock world. Ask : Arcade Fire; the Killers; the Artic Monkeys; Franz Ferdinand – even Justin Timberlake. Lady Gaga, and Adam Lambert would all give their first born to perform with Bowie. True to form, if Bowie was interested in a quick resurrection of his career he would have gone on to perform at the London Olympics – he refused. So, while Justin Bieber may be a nice kid with a cute voice – he is not the benchmark Bowie has set to overtake – no one can come close. The Stones sound like a tribute band, the Who haven’t really performed much new, I could go on and on …. BOWIE!
