In defense of incest in “Game of Thrones”…

I haven’t been watching “Game of Thrones – Season 4” on HBO well because I don’t have HBO. I had to get rid of it. I still love Game of Thrones books and the TV show, though and will watch “Season 4” when it releases on DVD.

The thing is, George R.R. Martin and HBO are under fire ’cause of their heavy use of “incest” rape from last Sunday’s episode. I won’t reveal any big spoilers, though, at least I try not to but I gotta get this off my chest.

There’s a lot of internet controversy over this. The “incest” obsession is upsetting a lot of fans. It’s upsetting a lot of people who read the books.

My thoughts? The “Game of Thrones” TV show is no stranger to controversy but this time they take controversy to extremes. I think using incest is a pretty good idea. In the real world, “incest” is wrong but in Westeros, in George’s mind, incest is alright in that world. There’s no law in incest in Westeros, I believe. Why are so many people surprised of the “incest” when there were already incest scenes in the beginning of Season 1??? Why is there “incest” in “Game of Thrones”? Does George have a fascination with it?

I love how “Game of Thrones” upsets people with dark stuff. First the Red Wedding and now this. If this dark and controversial stuff wasn’t in the books, then people wouldn’t be interested. That’s how I got interested in “Game of Thrones”. I loved the unpredictability and the shock-value through the stories.

I know the TV show is way different than the books but after thinking about it a while… it’s the right thing to do. I used to believe they should “tone” it down with the obsessive sex scenes but after thinking about it a while, I have no problem with the sex scenes and nudity all over it now. This stuff needs to be in there or else the show wouldn’t work. This is why the show is the highest rated TV show ever. The show is pretty addictive.

People want to see this stuff. Sex and controversy sells. That’s all there is to it.

I wish I was watching “Season 4” but again, don’t have HBO so I’ll wait for DVD release. Sounds like a good season so far from what I’m reading. I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan. Love the books and the TV show. I plan on re-watching the first three seasons.

  1. Incest is no more “right” in that world than it is here – hence the secret between them. It’s not intended to be conveyed as a good thing.

  2. You guys have to understand that incest was pretty common in the Middle Ages, the medieval world so it makes sense to use it. The Lannisters had to hide it for a pretty good reason. They had to hide it not because it wasn’t ok. It’s much deeper than that. It has more to do with their white hair. I bet you guys don’t even read the books or watch the show. If you didn’t, you shouldn’t make an opinion.

  3. Actually, I read them when they came out, way before any of this was on television. They hide it because it’s a taboo, just like it is here in real life. The previous dynasty, the Targaryens, wed brother to sister (like Viserys wanted to) and the resulting inbreeding made a lot of them crazy in the head, which is one of the many reasons why, in the fictional world (which is not the Middle Ages, it’s a fantasy world) incest is not ok.

Also, I don’t think incest was common in the Middle Ages in real life either…especially not brother-sister. Some monarchs were related due to political marriages, sometimes resulting in distant cousins (and even first cousins) being married, but that was about as close as they got. Relations between siblings was considered abhorrent. For example, the accusation that Anne Boleyn and her brother George Boleyn had committed incest was one of the reasons that both siblings were executed in May 1536.

  4. Incest was very much a ‘tool’ used to keep Royal Bloodlines ‘pure’ as they saw it at that time. It is too easy to place modern values onto different periods in time. But that is the point its a different time with different values to ours.

  5. I think you guys are taking my thoughts on this out of context. I’m not defending “incest”… I’m only defending their use of it in the show/the books. I know they think it’s pretty bad in Westeros but “incest” is pretty common. In Westeros, there is no law for it. That’s why a lot of them were doing it. It’s called experimentation pretty much.

I just think it’s a good idea to use it “fictionally” in entertainment. That’s the point I was trying to make in the beginning of this post. It’s different. It gets people talking.

I don’t agree with incestuous relationships but I’m sure this stuff goes on in the real world too. There is no doubt about that.

  6. I personally had a roommate my freshman year of college who was banging his cousin. She’d come visit every weekend. Pretty insane man.
