“Rocky – The Musical” has been in the talks for years, and it’s finally happening with newly hired writers. Songwriters, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have been hired to write, “Rocky – The Musical” along with novelist, Thomas Meehan. Just last April, the creators and producers held a private reading of the musical with the Rocky creator himself, Sylvester Stallone. While Sly himself will not star in the musical, he will still be a part of it by being an artistic partner and producer. Sly still owns the rights to the Rocky franchise.
Rocky the Musical will hit the theatre stage in Germany in 2012 and will arrive in Broadway in New York sometime in 2013.
More on the story, here.
I wish them the best of luck. It’s going to be hard to find an actor that can match Sly’s look and it’s going to be very challenging to imitate Sly’s speaking voice in the first, “Rocky”. Everyone tries to imitate Rocky’s speaking voice, but yeah, it’s very hard to do. In my opinion, Sly can’t be copied. I’m interested on who they’re going to hire to play Rocky Balboa for the musical. They’re obviously gonna go for a young actor.
I just wonder if they’re gonna have Frank Stallone cameo the musical. When they start singing, “Take You Back” (which is a song that Frank wrote for the movie), that’s when Frank would come out singing the song with the cast on stage. That would get the audience going.
Sly’s been talking about “Rocky – The Musical” for a long time and he’s actually making it happen.
Remember, the Rocky and Little Marie scene? This is going to be a hard scene to pull off for the play, again Sly’s speaking voice. I’ll be amazed if they can actually pull this musical off.
