Thought: Maybe Stephen King was just joking about Stephenie Meyer? Maybe we’re not picking up his sarcasm…

After thinking about it a while and after reading Stephen King’s rants about Stephenie again, maybe he’s just joking and fooling around. Maybe he really does respect Stephenie and the work she does, I think we’re not (including me) picking up his sarcasm. He’s always had this weird sense of humor when doing interviews with the media.

If Stephenie wasn’t a good writer, then her books wouldn’t get published at all. I think Stephen knows it. That’s how I think he could possibly be kidding around and making fun of her a bit.

There are hints of sarcasm we’re not picking up in his rants, here, I’ll quote them: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29001524/

“It’s exciting and it’s thrilling and it’s not particularly threatening because it’s not overtly sexual…” – Stephen King on Twilight…and here, ““Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”

As you can see he’s mixing both positive and negative thoughts about Twilight.

Maybe in a few day’s he’ll come out and say, “I’m only kidding when I say Stephenie is a bad writer, I actually love her.”

  1. Kev,
There are lots of writers out there who get published even though they are bad. Sometimes an agent or book publisher might have faith in an author and think they will make lots of money. As for Meyer, I haven’t read her books but I WILL say I’m sick of sissy vampires…ones who eat animals instead of humans because they’re so ashamed to be what they are. BULLSHIT! If I were a vamp, I’d revel in that shit! You mean I got super strength? Damn, I’ll rip off someone’s arm and drink their blood THAT way! Anne Rice’s vampires sucked too (no pun intended), but look how many sales SHE racked up.

  3. Lets just say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Stephen is entitled to it if he’s serious and not joking at all. People don’t have to agree with him just because he says it’s bad. If you like it, you like it, people enjoy whatever they want. People tell stories however they want. If authors are selling books and making tons of money off them, they gotta be doing something right. People are spending money on books ’cause they simply “like” reading them. If people are buying them, they like ’em. So if Stephenie or J.K. Rowling or any author, doesn’t matter who is breaking record sales in books, that means they are a good writer like ’em or hate ’em.

I find that people bashing Stephenie’s views on vampire teen romance in a negative direction is kind of ridiculous, yet most of them are all Harry Potter fans. Harry Potter is aimed toward the teen readers as well. See how hypocritical that is?

  5. Well, then again you also have to factor in the fact that some people are cows who like something because there is a heavy promotional push. Their mentality: “If it’s popular it must be good…if it’s not then it must be bad.” Do you realize how silly an attitude that is to have? So just because Meyer got heavily promoted, it means she is better than some other author who didn’t? There are a lot of writers out there who are hardly known but coud kick Meyer’s ass around the block. Same goes for all forms of art, including my other two favorites: music and movies. Think of how many bands you personally like that aren’t well-known aorund the world or even across the country. Does it mean Joe Nacco is “bad” just because he isn’t as well-known as John Mayer? And as for Stephenie writing a book that could appeal to teens, I don’t find that a factor that would make me judge her books any different. I just know I don’t like wimpy vampires, so I’ll probably never read them. That doesn’t mean she should or should not be published. All I’m saying is there are lots of times when the quality of a writer or their work cannot necessarily be judged by how popular they are.

  7. Im sorry but I agree with him, she is lousy at writing. And there are books that get published even if the author is bad at writing. But Meyer’s writing is awful. Its like reading a 12 years old diary. EW! And yes, I read the books and they suck.

  8. I hope not… I agree with him!!!! I completely applaud him for coming up and saying, “lady, you write like crap!” Stephenie has gotten so much undeserved praise for her twilight crap. SHe’s even been compared to J.K.ROWLING!!!! NO!! Don’t you DARE compare Stephenie to J.K.Rowling who is FAR SUPERIOR. J.K.Rowling is fresh, inovative, creative, and writes BEAUTIFULLY. Stephenie’s writing gets extremely dull, whilst J.K.Rowling is NEVER dull. I even read Harry Potter 7 IN THREE DAYS!!!!!!!! That’s how amazing the writing was. Stephenie’s breaking dawn- I couldn’t finish it! Especially book 3, I though it was because of me, but NO. The writing just got dull.
Sorry- but Stephenie meyer is a crappy “writer” and J.K.Rowling is way better. At least she has both writing chops AND story-tellling abiliities.
