Smashing Pumpkins, frontman, Billy Corgan is in court, testifying on Capitol Hill on the House Judiciary Committee. Lobbying for rights that artists should get paid when their songs are being played on the radio. You can see a picture of Billy in court in this article, he doesn’t look too happy either.

I agree that music artists should get paid when their stuff is being used whether it be for TV or radio, whatever. It’s their work. They work hard for it. They deserve to be respected back.

It’s not about being obsessed with money, it’s about respecting the hard work they do in their music.

I hope the musicians win this battle. They deserve to get paid when their music is played on radio.

  1. If they’re the song’s writer as Corgan is with most Smashing Pumpkins songs, they DO get paid when the music is on the radio. If he claimed that he doesn’t make a good income from airplay then he’s lying, he gets royalties from ASCAP or BMI. The issue at hand is that for years the artist and record company didn’t get paid because radio was free advertising for live tours, CDs and records. This was back in the days when people actually bought albums and CDs, but who the hell buys CDs anymore? Grandma, who doesn’t have internet? Billy Bob from the sticks who doesn’t have a credit card because he never has enough money at one time to open a bank account? I don’t know one person who has bought a CD in years. Most albums only have one or two good songs on them anyway, so anyone with a brain will save a ton of money and buy the one or two songs online. Especially that U2, they built a lifetime career out of coming out with endless albums with two good songs, or really more like, one good one and one “OK” one. Put them all together and you’ll get a decent greatest hits record. I would buy that. Maybe. Actually, probably not.
