Film Review: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”

Starring: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman

Directed by: Peter Jackson

So yesterday afternoon, I finally went and saw, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”. I was meaning to post this review yesterday, but didn’t feel like posting in the blog at all yesterday evening. Here is my review:

Plot/synopsis: A young Bilbo Baggins, goes on an adventure with Gandalf, and a group of thirteen dwarves, led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. They are on a quest to reclaim the home they once had, the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, from the evil dragon, Smaug. Along the way, they will have to survive their adventure into the Wild, swarming with Goblins, Orcs, deadly warqs, giant spiders, and more dangerous creatures.

I’ll be completely honest with you. At first, I was a little skeptical of the people behind the LOTR franchise, adapting, “The Hobbit”, to the big screen. I kept thinking it was going to be a typical Lord of the Rings movie, similar to the original trilogy. Surprisingly enough, the film was a little different. Sure, “The Hobbit”, had similar filming styles like the original trilogy. There will be a few characters that will return, but a totally different plot, and storyline. I may have read the book, to “The Hobbit”, years ago when I was a child, maybe. I haven’t read the book in a long time. Maybe I should.

Even though the film was at least 3 hrs long, the film didn’t feel like it was 3 hrs. at all. The pacing of the movie was pretty quick. The film had a great script and the movie was just entertaining throughout. I wasn’t bored a bit, and didn’t feel like the film dragged on at all. The film also has a less darker tone than the original trilogy, as “The Hobbit” was more family friendly. That’s probably because, “The Hobbit” novel was more of a children’s book, I believe?

Martin Freeman, made a perfect young Bilbo. I couldn’t ask for a better actor. It was also cool to see some of the characters return from the original trilogy. Pretty much everyone was there. Even Elijah Wood had a cameo as Frodo, in the beginning of the movie. I think Peter Jackson created a masterpiece here, and it looks like, “The Hobbit” trilogy, will be better than the original trilogy. I wouldn’t quite say, “The Hobbit – Part 1”, was the best of the franchise ’cause there are two more movies ahead. Peter Jackson, should be the only film maker to make movies based on books ’cause he really is the best at it.

I thought “The Hobbit” was phenomenal. Yes, the movie was action packed, and it was a blast to watch. This is definitely one of the best movies of this year. It was definitely awesome. Go check it out if you’re an LOTR fan.

Score for “The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey” = **** (4 stars as in “excellent”)

Report: Gollum and Gandalf are returning for the Hobbit!!!

I know the world is getting excited for Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” but am I the only one here who thinks this is not gonna be good? Why the hell bring back Gollum, Frodo, Galadriel, and other characters, when they weren’t in the original, “Hobbit” story, from the 1937 novel.

The only characters from the original LOTR series that should be in the film is none other than Bilbo and Gandalf, since those two were the most important part of the story. It’s typical Hollywood, changing the plot around to help the box office, period.

I’ve read the novel “The Hobbit”, it’s one of my favorites. It’s a classic. I know Peter Jackson is going to change the whole story around to make it similar to the the original LOTR films. I’m not sure if I will see, “The Hobbit” or not. They should stay true and follow the original story, but you know they won’t. “The Hobbit” is a prequel to the “Fellowship of the Ring”, so it won’t make sense to bring the other characters in.

If you want to know why I don’t write about “The Hobbit” so much, this is why. I didn’t want to disappoint people with my honesty, so here I am, speaking it all out.

I just thought of an idea for my next video blog, and maybe I will explain more in detail on why, “The Hobbit” is going to suck.

BREAKING NEWS: Frodo will be in “The Hobbit”!!!

The news have been confirmed that Elijah Wood will reprise his role as Frodo Baggins for the two “Hobbit” films. It’ll be a small role though as Frodo will appear in the opening scene for both films. It said that Frodo will be told the stories of Bilbo Baggins, so yeah, we’re probably going to hear a narrator tell the story, of the Hobbit.

Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, and Martin Freeman have been confirmed for “The Hobbit” as well.

Read more on it, here.

I’m pretty sold to the Hobbit now, and can’t wait to see it. Glad Peter Jackson is still directing ’cause I wouldn’t see it if he wasn’t directing.

BREAKING NEWS: Cate Blanchett will reprise role as Galadriel for “The Hobbit”!!!

Cate Blanchett is set to reprise her role as Galadriel for Peter Jackson’s, “The Hobbit”. So far, two cast members from the original trilogy will be in the “Hobbit”. I’m pretty sure Ian McKellen is still playing Gandalf too.

Deadline, reports.

Galadriel wasn’t a character in “The Hobbit” book, so Peter must of wrote her in the script somehow. Typical hollywood changing things around as usual.

Report: Interesting interview with film maker, Peter Jackson…

Interesting interview with Peter Jackson, film maker who did the “Lord of the Rings” series, the “King Kong” remake, etc. He is currently making, “The Hobbit”, the prequel to LOTR.

In this interview he speaks about remakes, sequels, adaptations…he also speaks about his movie, “District 9” and other films.

While I love today’s Hollywood movies, the only complaint that I have about Hollywood is that I too am pretty much fed up with remakes, sequels and adaptations from books/TV shows. Hollywood is over doing this stuff to death. Why? It makes the box office a lot of money, that’s why.

Just so you know, Stallone’s, “The Expendables” is a completely original film. It’s not a sequel from one of his older movies, and it’s not adapted from a novel anywhere. “The Expendables” is completely original from Stallone’s mind…so when “The Expendables” hit theaters in 2010, this is why I think this movie will be the most successful of that year. The film has all the tough guy action stars all in one movie and what’s even better about it, the story is an original piece of work. There’s more reasons why I’m so excited about the film. Kudos to Sly, for finally doing something original this time! Yeah!

Peter Jackson will not only produce “The Hobbit” which will be directed by “Hellboy” director Guillermo del Torro, Peter has also officially signed on to write the screenplay with the same writers whom he wrote with in the “Lord of the Rings Trilogy”. Peter Jackson is set to pen “The Hobbit” with Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens.

“The Hobbit” will be split into two films and Guillermo del Torro will direct both films.

Hope they do the film good. I have mixed feelings on this one.

BREAKING NEWS: Ian McKellen will play Gandalf in “The Hobbit”…

Actor Ian McKellen confirmed to the public he is reprising his legendary role as Gandalf in “The Hobbit”. McKellen is signed to play both “Hobbit” films with Guillermo del Toro being the director of the film. McKellen says this role is too hard to pass up because he loved playing the character in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Sounds like he just can’t wait to get back to it.

You can see Ian McKellen in other films such as the “X-Men” trilogy, “The Da Vinci Code”, “Apt Pupil” and more to list.

Gandalf without Ian McKellen would be wrong so I’m glad he’s back!
