I'm a musician, singer/songwriter, blogger, writer, poet, bodybuilder, movie lover, music lover, video gamer, history/political buff, conservative/republican, etc. I like to do a lot of things.

Why I disagree with Battle of the Bands and other competitions, contests, etc.

In these blogs, you would see me talk down on band competitions like, “Battle of the Bands” and other stupid contests. Bands would do just about anything for recognition and become more established, and they think that doing all this stuff is going to help them become more well known and successful. So you ask me, “Why do Kev hate band competitions & contests?” Well, I’m about to explain why.

I know this is going to be really harsh but it needs to said. Why don’t I agree with this stuff? Simply put. It is cheating. How is it cheating? I believe it’s a quick and cheap way to get recognition & success.

A band can get well known and popular without being a part of these things at all. There are other ways of becoming an established act. How? Just make the music, put it out there and see what happens. Let the music speak on it own. When I get a band going, I would want to see how my music will do without being a part of this stuff.

Doing these competition things is just not a good career move, just my opinion. I mean, fuck. Do you really want to see your music head down that way?

Bands have become popular by not being a part of these competitions, I’ve seen it before. It has happened to a lot of bands out there. Don’t worry about contests and awards. They’re not important and nothing special. Just keep writing the music, playing the gigs, and you’ll grow a large following just by doing that. Doing these competitions makes a band look desperate, and I don’t want to look desperate. I want to make it look like that I’m enjoying this and truly being appreciative of the fans support.

Nothing wrong with doing contests, do what you want to do, but don’t do way too many of them. Contests are a huge fuckin’ waste of time, when all you should be doing is making the music and playing the gigs.

Don’t get me wrong, I like a good opportunity every now & then, but I won’t obsess with it. I don’t need to win 20 hours worth of studio time or win a slot to play on a major festival, when a good opportunity for me is just getting an actual gig booked at a club I haven’t played before. Or getting any kind of gig, is a good opportunity for me. Another good opportunity are fans supporting your music and liking it, that’s all I pretty much need. Screw all the bigger stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Martha Marcy May Marlene”, brief review…

Last night, I finally gotten around to watching, “Martha Marcy May Marlene”, starring Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes. I was very impressed with the movie. It was definitely one of the best dramas of 2011, and I was very moved throughout the whole film.

It tells the story, of a young girl named, Martha, who disappeared from her sister Lucy’s home for a few years. Where has Martha gone after all these years? Well, Martha has been living with a hippie like cult that was led by Patrick (John Hawkes). She has been living with the cult under a different name. This cult had other young women living with him. These women were forced to help work around the house, and of course, the women were also raped and abused by these men that were in this cult.

Martha escaped from this cult, ran away, and went back to her sister, Lucy’s home, who lived with her boyfriend Ted. As the film goes along, her past would come back to haunt her and would make her a different person. The film would show flashbacks of her cult years as the present time would tell the main story.

Enough with the plot, on with my thoughts. This is a pretty good psychological drama. It can get pretty depressing, dark, and scary at times. It almost makes you want to feel sorry for this girl. The film wants to make you decide if she is crazy and insane or not.

Elizabeth Olsen did a great job in this film, and I thought she should have gotten an Oscar nod for this role. Of course, John Hawkes did another impressive performance. John Hawkes, an actor most famous for the TV show, “Eastbound & Down” for HBO, but he became a more recognizable actor when he did the film, “Winter’s Bone”, which he did get Oscar nominated for. I liked John’s character in this film more than his role in “Winter’s Bone”. John did not play a villain in “Winter’s Bone”, he was the good guy in that one, but John was the villain, in “Martha Marcy”.

You should definitely check this movie out. I liked the film a lot! Buy it or rent it.

How to do band interviews…the real way…

I know there are plenty of local websites, radio stations, newspapers, etc. that love to interview bands & musicians. You know what? In my opinion, most of that stuff is crap when it comes to band interviews. When bands get asked to do an interview for a website, radio station, or a newspaper, most bands would jump on the opportunity ’cause interviews is good marketing and promoting for your music.

If the interviewer wants to get more respect from the band, the way to do that is not ask the same damn questions that you ask every other band. I’m sure the band gets the same damn questions every interview they do and I’m pretty sure they get tired of answering the same stuff. Don’t make the questions too easy and simple. Make them different and unique.

If you want to entertain your readers and the band’s fanbase, you want to make the interview entertaining. Almost every local band interview I read or hear, you always hear the same questions being asked, “What inspired the music on the album”, “What is the songwriting process like”, “What instruments do you play”, “What is this song about”, etc. *yawn*

Hmmmm….lets see, how about questions that are more interesting? Here are some better questions to ask bands: “How old were you when you first picked up the instrument”, “What was the first song you learned”, “What equipment did you use”, “How do you come up with songs? Do you improvise them or write them down”, “What scales did you use for that solo”, “What is your dream guitar that you can’t afford?”, etc. Ask musician questions like those, and they would be talking non stop.

Soon I’m going to start doing band & musician interviews in this blog, and I’ll show them how it’s all done.

Yep, I’m going to trash this PS3 system and buy a new one this week!

My ps3 is dead for good. I’m planning on trashing it and buying a new one instead.  I don’t want to repair it myself or send it to Sony. Buying a new one, is my only choice. Which is good actually. I have this fat PS3 system for a good 4 or 5 years, it’s about time for a new one anyway. I’m planning on getting the 160 GB PS3 Slim which will cost $250. I think I’m going to get it this week.

I think I am going to start collecting BluRay discs more. Was going to stick with DVD, but I think I’m definitely going to start replacing my favorite movies I have on DVD to BluRay instead. I was going to stick with DVD but I’ve grown to liking BluRay more. The latest BluRay I picked up was, “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”. The PS3 plays BluRay discs way BETTER than the regular BluRay player, in my opinion. BluRays look better on a PS3 too.

Happy Easter, by the way. Today, I’m going help my brother and his girlfriend move into their new place, since they just finally moved back home from California. Then Ham dinner with the family, and “Game of Thrones” later tonight. That’s my plan. Hope, all of you out there have a good Easter too.

My goal with full band music…

As I do want to mostly play heavy rock with full band music, I’ll still do many other genres as well. I’ll still play acoustic/folk music, yes. I will also try a little blues, funk music, punk rock, and maybe learn some jazz guitar as well. I learned if you want to be a better guitar player and play more professionally, you need to be a versatile musician by playing all genres of music. Neil Young has done exactly that! He switches genres, every album, and he has done just about everything you can think of. Isn’t there anything Neil Young can’t do? I wanna be able to play everything myself. I’ll get bored staying with one genre.

My next demo, I’m planning on making it a heavy rock album with guitar solos. People don’t think I could do the heavy rock thing, but I’m about to prove you all wrong. Just watch me. Don’t think I can rock? Well, I’m gonna soon.

Once I get my timing and rhythm down better, just wait ’til you hear what I have planned in the future. As far as timing and rhythm goes in guitar playing, this stuff is all a piece of cake! It’s easy to count certain rhythms along with a metronome and play in time. It only gets really challenging when you play in a real fast tempo like I said before.

I don’t know if I will do superfast rock n’ roll music just yet, still have some work to do on that stuff and more practicing. I want to prove people that I can be an actual “musician”. Yes, “musician”.

I do believe, that people are starting to see it, but this is only the beginning.

Loren Weisman, “Nicknames and staged names can work and sometimes not”…

Loren Weisman put up another great blog on how musicians using staged names for your career:

Read the article, here.

I agree, that a lot of musicians seem to be using nicknames or staged names. Even a lot of unsigned musicians been making up names for themselves. It’s happening more and more.

Why do musicians do it? It’s a good marketing ploy, period. If solo musicians released music under their real birth names, their music may not reach a wider audience. A staged name, fans would recognize that artist a little better.

My actual name is Kevin Brockway Jr. I used to release music under this name, but I figure it would be better, if I come up with a staged name. I tried to come up with all kinds of different staged names, by writing down on a piece of paper. Didn’t like any of them, so I thought, why not cut my name in half and just call myself, Kev Brock?

The name seemed to work successfully as people know me better that way. People always called me Kev, sometimes people called me by last name, that’s how I came up with it, so I put ’em together. That’s how the Kev Brock name came out to be. Now that name is all over the internet and all over the world of local music.

If I still released my music under my real name, then people would have a hard time getting used to.

There is nothing wrong with changing your name to release your music. Musicians do this stuff all the time.

The reason for these Hollywood re-boots and remakes…

I know remakes and reboots have been a huge trend in Hollywood lately. They keep coming and coming. Whether you like it or not, they are going to keep coming. I know most of us are getting kind of sick of ’em, but I’ve said it before, I have no problem with remakes. I’ve always defended them in this blog, and explained why a few times before. I wouldn’t mind writing about it again. Hollywood have been accused of doing it for the money and not having any original ideas in storytelling. I totally disagree!

To be fair to Hollywood and why they do what they do, read up:

  • They help bring more people to the original film – Like I said before, many young people of today’s generation never even heard of or seen the original films. So they remake the classics, hoping the new version will bring more people to the original. Simple, right?
  • Some film makers believe the original didn’t tell enough of the story – Maybe the original was poorly written. Should have been made better or what if the story could be told more?
  • The film deserved a modern day version – Back in those days, they didn’t have the technology like we all had, so they deserved a better upgrade. They just imagined what the original would be like if it was made today.
  • The director had a vision of his/her take on the film – Ever listen to bands & artists do cover songs of other people’s music? Well a remake of a film is kind of the same thing. Rob Zombie remade “Halloween” ’cause simply put, he had a vision in his head. His own take of what he would want the film to be like. The same with other directors that did remakes over the years.
  • Remakes gives the freedom of creativity – There is a reason that a lot of remakes don’t make ’em exactly like the original film. Copyright material is the big part of it. So that means it gives the film maker more artistic freedom.

I wish people wouldn’t be so harsh over re-boots and remakes. I like the different takes on peoples work. It’s art. Like I said before, not all remakes are bad, and there are some good ones out there.

Even some of the new remakes can be pretty good too. I liked, “Nightmare On Elm St.” remake with Jackie Earl Haley and the “Friday the 13th” remake is good too. The “Conan: The Barbarian” remake isn’t bad either. I also liked the, “I Spit On Your Grave” remake as well.

I believe in and trust Hollywood in what they do. You should too.

My Ps3 system sadly got the “Yellow Light Of Death”…

I was playing, “Elder Scrolls: Oblivion” most of the week. About once or twice, my system would shut down by itself. I kept thinking it was the game that was making my system crash since the game was a pre-owned copy. Then my PS3 shut down for good. When I try to turn it on, a yellow light will come on for a second. Means it’s the “Yellow Light of Death”. You know with the Xbox360, sometimes you get the Red Ring of Death? Well the PS3 will sometimes either get the “Red Light of Death” or the “Yellow Light of Death”. Well, I finally got the yellow.

I’ve done some research on how to repair but you have to either mail the system to Sony, but it’ll cost me some big money to get it repaired from SONY since my 1 year warranty is up, or you can take it apart and fix it yourself with a heat gun. The system is either overheated or something wrong with the motherboard or power supply.

This really blows, and a pain in the ass, but I’ve had my PS3 system for a good 3 or 4 years now. The older the system gets, the more it will have problems. Sony did this on purpose for everyone, so people can either pay money to get it repaired or go buy a new one. Just the company’s sneaky little way of making more money.

Instead of going through all that repairing, for fear of making the PS3 system much worse, I’ll probably just give it up and buy a new PS3 system sometime this Spring/Summer. The system I own is not the new PS3 Slim, it’s the original model.

That’s okay though, there’s no really important data on the Ps3 that I need. I just use it for gaming and watching Netflix streams, that’s pretty much it.

I could probably take it to a video game store and have it looked at but getting it repaired would probably cost more cash. So buying a whole new PS3 console is my best bet. No other choice really.

At first, I thought it the game doing it, but it was the system itself. I’ll see what I can do. I was going to watch “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” on Blu Ray through the PS3 system but won’t be able to. At least the Blu Ray set of “Dragon Tattoo”, has a DVD version included, so I’ll watch the DVD version tonight instead.

Bands & musicians on facebook, either fan page or personal page…honest criticism by fans…

These days, the world of unsigned music seems to be a huge hit on the social networking giant, Facebook. Pretty much all musicians are promoting their stuff to get heard either on their fan page (or like pages) and even their personal pages.

On my facebook pages, I use my fan page, to promote my music related stuff. I use my facebook fanpage as my official website like a lot of unsigned bands seem to be doing. On my personal page, I use it to talk about whatever, interact with friends, family, supporters & fans.

Thing that bothers me about facebook is that not only that people have weird communicating skills on them, a lot of people on there seem to be getting hurt & upset easily, when you decide to be honest & criticize them about something. A lot of people will mistakenly see it as if you were trying to bash them or trying to put them down, when you are only trying to be nice, and helpful.

When musicians get too upset and pissed off, over a little bit of honesty, are they really this emotional and sensitive? Maybe a little bit, yes, but I truly believe that when musicians get too defensive over certain things you say about them, it is definitely all ego for sure. Some musicians are pretty self centered, period.

I don’t mean to sound like a broken record and repeat myself, but I just go by how bands & musicians socialize with people on facebook and other places online. The fact is, that a lot of musicians have horrible communicating skills.

Some musicians can be easy to get along with and some can take criticism by fans, but most of them can’t take a little bit of truth. I can handle criticism with no problem. I don’t mind a little bit of honesty when people talk about me, but as long as people are not attacking or bashing, I’m okay with that.

When you put up a facebook page for everyone to read and everyone to post on, people are not going to write on it however you want to. Everything is not going to be perfect on your facebook pages. You will run into some positive people and negative people. You will also run into some honest fans that will give you a bit of criticism.

I try my very best to keep my internet world as positive as possible, but no matter what happens, negative and honest people will always come around. That’s just the way the internet is. You put yourself out there for the world to see, people will be honest about you.

If you or your band can’t handle a mixture of responses and emotions on facebook, then you shouldn’t have gotten a facebook page to begin with. What is it with musicians getting emotional over silly stuff? Oh that’s right, they want to think they’re so important and talented all the time, so you don’t deserve to criticize them.

Bands think they can have all the right to criticize the amateurs but when you decide to criticize them, it’s the wrong thing to do. Boo hooo….

This is why I don’t write on band pages too much in facebook, you never know if their tempers will flare. Bands have anger problems around here, and that’s what I’ve been trying to say in my blogs for years.

Kev

I’m so glad, I bought the drummers book, extremely helpful!!!

So I started messing with the Drummers instructional book a little bit today. Just learn the timing & rhythm it gives you from the book, thrown on the instructional CD and play along with drum tracks on it. This stuff will definitely help you play along with a metronome or a real drummer a lot better for sure. After I finish this book sometime, I’ll buy more drummers books by ordering some more online.

I seriously need to get my timing down ’cause I really want to get a band going. It’s very important to stay in the pocket with other musicians. If you want more respect toward your music, getting good with timing is key!
