Could Temple of the Dog reunite at Bridge School Benefit???

I just noticed that Soundgarden and Pearl Jam are booked for Neil’s Bridge School Benefit. Does that mean there is a possibility that there is going to be a Temple of the Dog reunion? Remember Temple of the Dog was a super group that had just Chris Cornell singing with Pearl Jam members including, Eddie.

That would be kick ass if Temple of the Dog gave us a surprise performance… maybe for a few songs or they perform that untitled album in it’s entirety. It be cool to see Eddie and Chris sing, “Hunger Strike” together again and I’m sure they will.

In defense of Soundgarden’s “King Animal”… the album is getting mixed reviews…

Soundgarden’s 6th album, “King Animal” is getting mixed reviews by critics and fans online. A large number of people are disappointed in the new album. I’m reading other people’s thoughts about this album in facebook, and other forums and blogs. Why? This is a true Soundgarden record. This album defines the band’s sound. Out of their six albums of their career, I think this is the best one. I think the reasons for people being disappointed from what I’m reading are: 1) They expected this album to sound like “Louder Than Love” and “Badmotorfinger 2) They expected something heavy 3) They expected an album of radio friendly singles like “Badmotorfinger”, “The Superunkown”, and “Down On the Upside”.

Maybe this is why people don’t understand,”King Animal”, because it wasn’t meant to be a radio friendly album. On “King Animal”, you’re certainly not going to hear radio friendly like songs such as “Black Hole Sun”, “Spoon Man” or “Blow Up The Outside World”. In fact, I can’t see any of the songs on “King Animal” being considered as hit singles, and I love albums like that. I love albums that wants to stay away from being mainstream sounding.

On top of all this, this album has the “Louder Than Love/Badmotorfinger” classic sound all over “King Animal”. It has it’s signature sound from almost every album. There are a few songs that sound like that it was from “Down on the Upside” as well. While these are all brand new Soundgarden songs on the album, “King Animal”, it celebrates the sounds from the earlier albums. Of course, there are also some new and different styles thrown in there too. While this new album certainly is a grower, I liked it the first time I heard it. It is a pretty heavy album from what I’ve heard.

Soundgarden are maturing as songwriters. This is a unique and different approach to songwriting. The time signatures are odd, the tempos are different, the riffs are awesome, and Chris can still sing really good. He may not be able to sing like he did in 80’s but the man still has some great pipes. Him doing Audioslave and a few solo albums, did not take the sound away from Soundgarden at all. They still sound like Soundgarden, even after a 13 year break.

Anybody who badly judges the album, the first time hearing it and didn’t like it, probably haven’t gotten over their past. Well get over it. The new album has all of their old classic sound all over it, as I explained. Some people didn’t like it ’cause the songwriting is so different than the earlier albums. It’s a pretty tight and sick album. Loved it!

When iconic bands move forward from their original sound…

Soundgarden, is streaming their new album, “King Animal”, in it’s entirety on Itunes today, and I gave it a listen. I’ll give my thoughts on the album later on in this post, but first, there’s a topic I need to get off my chest. Whenever an iconic metal or rock band puts out a new album, everyone expects them to go back to their original sound that made them for who they were. For example, everyone wants Metallica to go back to speed metal. Everyone wants Pearl Jam to make another amazing album like, “Ten” again. Everyone wants the Smashing Pumpkins to sound like, “Siamese Dream” again. Everyone wants U2 to go back to their “Joshua Tree/Unforgettable Fire” days. When those bands release new albums, everyone’s disappointed ’cause they don’t have their old school style anymore.

The thing that people don’t understand about bands, is that none of them like to look back at their songwriting. It’s about moving forward and creating new art. Playing from the heart and playing with feeling. I’m sure these guys want to go back to their old sound, but with songwriting, they can’t help it, ya know? They just play whatever comes out of them. Play whatever is in their heads.

Back to Soundgarden, I don’t think they’ll make a “Badmotorfinger” sounding album ever again. While that is an incredible album, the band quickly changed sounds and styles after that. Bands want to sound different every album they do. That’s the way songwriting works. Bands and songwriters can’t take ideas from other people. It’s not about making the music of how other people want it to be. It’s about making the music that pleases the band.

“King Animal” is getting mixed reviews. After a long awaited Soundgarden return, everyone was getting excited. Expecting the new Soundgarden record to sound old school, and of course, it wasn’t going to be. I think the new Soundgarden album, “King Animal” is pretty damn good. Definitely unique and different. There are some pretty odd time signatures and different song structures. Soundgarden are maturing as songwriters. The vocal harmonies and Chris’s singing is just mind blowing. There are plenty of great guitar riffs on it. It’s not the best Soundgarden record, but it is definitely better than, “Down On the Upside”.

People really need to get over a band’s past, already. Just appreciate ’em, and stop being negative pricks over music, all the time. People don’t understand that bands love to experiment with different sounds. That’s what Neil Young have always done. Neil keeps changing all the time, and you don’t see people complaining to Neil about going back to his old school sound. Neil got away with it.

Musicians just write what they want. End of story.

Soundgarden drops new song off of “King Animal” their new album…

The mighty Soundgarden who are one of my favorite bands, just dropped a new song on their website today. The name of the new song is titled, “Been Away For Too Long”. I liked what I heard. It’s a pretty sick song. It’s definitely not “The Superunkown” or “Down On the Upside”. The new song reminds me more of the “Louder than Love” and “Badmotorfinger” era. This is old school, Soundgarden. They are keeping their promises that they are bringing their old school sound back. Look like the band is going to stream their whole album on their website, releasing one song at a time up until release, which is Nov. 13th. The band doesn’t say that on their website, it’s just my guess on what they’re about to do. The boys still have it. Can’t wait for the new album. \m/

Enjoy the song, here.

Cool Video: The mighty Soundgarden unleashes “King Animal” trailer!

Soundgarden, one of my favorite bands just released a teaser video of their upcoming new album, “King Animal”, which I will get the album. I really hope this is a good album and it won’t disappoint. I’m hoping it’ll be heavy rockin’, and not another “Down on the Upside” sounding album. I like, “Down on the Upside” but wasn’t their best album. I thought “The Superunkown”, “Badmotorfinger”, and “Louder Than Love” were their best records. I’m looking forward to hearing what Soundgarden has in store for us for their next record.

Enjoy it, here.

Soundgarden announces new album titled, “King Animal” for a Fall release this year…

The mighty Soundgarden, just announced new details finally of their upcoming new album they planned, a while back. The name of the new album will be titled, “King Animal”, slated for a Fall release date. You can hear a preview of a new song off the album on this website, here.

As a big Soundgarden fan, I’m looking forward to hearing what they have in store for us musically. From the sound of things, sounds like they’re going back to their old school sound they had back in the 80’s. I don’t think this will be another, “Down On the Upside” album, which was their previous album released in 1996.

I’m definitely looking forward to the new album.

Report: Kim Thayil says the new Soundgarden album is “definitely really heavy”!!!

Soundgarden is currently in the studio recording their new album. Fans worried what direction the band is going to take their new music to. Fans assumed that the new album might be mainstream pop, similar to the “Black Hole Sun” and “Burden In My Hand” era. Even worse, fans were also worried that Soundgarden is going to go pop because of Chris Cornell’s solo career with American Idol and all that stuff.

Well, guys, there’s nothing to worry about. Kim Thayill says the new Soundgarden songs are “definitely really heavy”. They also said they are going back to their old roots. Going back to what they sounded like in the old days of Soundgarden.

Read more on it, here.

I’m glad they are giving what the fans want, heavy rock music. That’s what Soundgarden is supposed to be and now I can’t wait for the new album!

BREAKING NEWS: Soundgarden announced they are working on new music for a new studio album!!!

I’ve been saying a long time hoping they would do this. They ARE! Soundgarden announced on their website, that the band is writing new music for a new Soundgarden record. As you all know, Soundgarden haven’t released a new record since 1996’s “Down on the Upside”. Yes, it was that long ago.

See the band’s announcement, here.

To be honest, I’m a little worried of how their new material is going to sound. Hopefully they won’t sound too pop like they did with the “Superunknown” and “Down on the Upside’ stuff. I hope they go back to old school metal of what they sounded like during their “Batmotorfinger” and “Louder Than Love” days.

Hope the band don’t disappoint us with their new record. Hope it’s going to be good, heavy, and rocking.

Thought: What’s next for Soundgarden???

So, Soundgarden, played Lollapalooza 2010 over the weekend. They just played their usual greatest hits on that gig. Most band reunion’s are silly but Soundgarden is the only band reunion that is worth happening. Why? Because, the world felt Soundgarden ended their career so quick, they ended their career so early. Soundgarden fans felt like the band could have gone on longer which is the sudden breakup for the band. It was too early for the band to call it quits in the early 90’s after their ’96 album “Down on the Upside” their last studio record.

All we can do is hope and pray for a new Soundgarden album in the future and a full time World tour. That’s the point with these few new Soundgarden gigs. They were a test to see if they still had their popularity and to see if they still have that “energy”. Well, we all know that Soundgarden still HAS IT! While the band didn’t yet announce a new album and new tour, it could be a possibility that it might happen. Their Lollapalooza gig was a hit. So I don’t see why it wouldn’t happen.

The last few Soundgarden gigs, it definitely looked like they were very happy to be back and having fun again. So I think they WILL stay around longer. The band soon to be releasing, “Telephantasm” is a little hint of that. I’m sure the band is discussing a full time return so we’ll have to wait and see. I don’t care about other band reunions, but Soundgarden deserves to stick around for a lot of reasons.

Reunited Soundgarden performs the Soundbox nightclub in Seattle…

The reunited Seattle grunge band, Soundgarden, performed their first gig at the Soundbox nightclub in Seattle since getting back together. Listening to audio clips of the gig through Youtube, I’m absolutely fucking blown away. The band still HAS IT. That same tight energy they always had. Except, Soundgarden is meaner, stronger, and tighter than they ever were before. I think their tight energy comes from Matt Cameron’s impressive drumming skills. Cameron is a monster drummer just listen to him. I think Matt Cameron playing in Pearl Jam just made him a better drummer for Soundgarden, indeed.

When playing in a band, in my opinion, I think the drums is the most important instrument out of all instruments. If you want to be a tight and aggressive band, the drums do that for ya. It doesn’t matter how well you play guitar or bass, it’s the drums that makes all musicians play better.

Soundgarden is scheduled to play one gig so far, which is headlining Lollapalooza in Chicago. This isn’t the first time Soundgarden played Lollapalooza as the band played Perry Ferrell’s festival many times. I remember one year Lollapalooza was in Saratoga Springs at SPAC back in ’92 when RATM and Soundgarden were both the main headliners.

I really hope their Lollapalooza show in Chicago isn’t their only gig and hope Soundgarden sticks around for a full time tour, and hopefully new album. I think their Soundbox gig was just a test to see if they still have that popularity and if they can still play live. Yes, they still have both. How about that Matt Cameron? Their Lollapalooza gig is gonna be great. I’m glad they didn’t play, “Black Hole Sun” and played mostly their classics that fans want to hear! Chris’s vocals in these tracks are incredible. Just proves his solo career was a huge mistake.

Enjoy these amazing bootleg audio clips below.
