RIP: Tom Petty 1950 – 2017

I  didn’t want to post this tribute/obit to Tom Petty right away ’cause I was waiting for official confirmation on what was going to happen to him. Yesterday evening, there was a big debate in social media on whether or not Tom Petty was dead. Rumours were swirling social networking that he died after being hospitalized due to being in full  cardiac arrest. The media rushed in to announced his death without official confirmation which helped sparked the debate on whether he was dead then the media retracted the death reports after TMZ stated he was still clinging to life. Later on that evening, Tom’s manager and family confirmed his death and the Heartbreakers officially announced it themselves on their FB page.

Like most, this is a heartbreaker for me too. Tom Petty was a hero of mine musically. He was a big influence in my own singing and songwriting. Yeah, Tom was a hitmaker for sure. He wrote a lot of great hits, but he has tons of other great obscure songs that were never played on the radio. Do you listen to Tom Petty for the hits or for his albums? Well, I listened to him for his albums ’cause he was a phenomenal songwriter. I’ve listened to his music for years. Heard every studio album he did. Shamefully, I never got to see him live in concert when I always wanted to.

Tom Petty got his start in music when he formed his first band called, Mudcrutch. The band Mudcrutch signed a record deal, but it didn’t go so well for them ’cause their first single bombed in sales. They were forced to break-up, and this lead to Tom Petty forming the Heartbreakers later. The Heartbreakers released 13 albums with Tom, and Tom released 3 solo albums. Tom also did two records with the Travelling Wilburys (a supergroup he formed with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne), and then Tom reunited Mudcrutch not too long ago and they released two albums together. Yes, The Mudcrutch album, Mudcrutch 2 was Tom’s final project before he passed. Tom was a pretty hard working musician over the years of his life. Making records and touring pretty heavily; that was pretty much all he did.

I had great respect for him immensely. He was part of the reason I wanted to write my own songs. If you want to know more about Tom Petty’s life and career, watch the “Running Down a Dream documentary on Netflix. Tom Petty was a rock n’ roll genius for sure… everything he did was so good.

Will Tom’s record labels release one more Tom Petty album whether it will be with the Heartbreakers or his solo stuff? We’ll wait and see. I’m sure we will get one more Tom Petty studio album. I’m sure the Heartbreakers are gonna search in their vault ’cause I’m sure the band have plenty of songs that they threw away. They’ll do something for him.

Enjoy my Tom Petty cover tribute video below where I cover the song, “You Wreck Me”. I’m thinking of doing a few more Petty covers too.

RIP Tom and thanks for the kickass music.

Tom Petty responds to Sam Smith controversy…

There’s a lot of speculation that singer Sam Smith is being accused of “plagiarism” all because of Tom Petty getting rewarded some royalties and song credits for Sam’s song “Stay With Me” which sounds like Tom’s song, “I Wont Back Down”. I listened to Sam Smith’s song, “Stay With Me” this morning and I noticed the similarities. Just the chorus of the two songs sound pretty much the same.

There have been all kinds of internet controversy over this. Sam Smith fans were outraged at Tom Petty and there were a lot of speculation that Tom have successful sued Sam Smith.

Tom wants to clear the air that this isn’t a lawsuit and there never was one. There is no heated feud between the two of them. They’re totally cool with each other and agreed with each other that Tom would get some credits for the song.

Tom says it’s just a “musical accident” which I happen to agree with.

These days it’s getting very hard to make “original” music. It’s very hard to make something totally original that doesn’t sound like someone else ’cause everything have been already done over the years, ya know? So it’s not Sam’s fault that he wrote a song that sounds like something else.

It’s the same deal with other bands and artists. Most bands like Led Zep, The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, etc. have all been accused of plagiarism but in my opinion, no. You write a song and next thing you know, someone else already has the same melody when you didn’t know it. Happens all the time. That’s what happened with the whole Coldplay vs. Joe Satriani thing.

I just don’t believe that artists rip off other songs. Stealing ideas is not their intention. A “musical accident” like Tom explained. Sometimes artists like to borrow stuff from other artists, that happens too.

It’s a real shame that the media made Tom look like the bad guy in this — thanks to gossip sites like TMZ and shit, ya know?

Tom is a class act, though. He has always been a nice guy and he responded to this like a real professional. Wish we had more in the music business like him!

Kanye’s career wouldn’t have gotten this big if it wasn’t for his relationship with Kim K…

*sigh* Kanye headlining another big festival. Yes, it’s true what I said in the title. If it wasn’t for Kanye’s relationship with Kim K. then Kanye wouldn’t have been this big with his latest album, “Yeezus”. “Yeezus” wouldn’t have been a hit album if it wasn’t for Kim K. He’s definitely using her to help boost his career and I’m sure Kim is using Kanye to boost her career as well. It’s all ego with those two. Before Kanye got together with Kim K. his music wasn’t that mainstream. The only reason all of these big festivals is booking him to headline is ’cause they know his relationship with Kim K. will attract a big crowd.

Kanye is headlining Outside Lands festival along with Tom Petty and The Killers being the headliners:

Report: Tom Petty’s stolen vintage guitars found, thief arrested!

Last week, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, were rehearsing for their tour at Culver Studios in Culver City, but 5 vintage guitars were stolen from the band. They were very old and very expensive guitars! The band offered, a $7,500 reward with, “no questions asked”, if anybody had information or even found them.

Well, the guitars were found and the thief was arrested. No details were given at this time, but they will discuss it at a press conference.

More on the story, here.

Tom Petty, the man himself, posted a statement about it on the band’s official facebook page. He wrote, “The guitars have been found! I am extremely grateful to the Culver City Police Department for a job well done and touched by the outpouring of good wishes and concern from our fans and friends.” – Tom Petty

Congrats, Tom! I’m sure he’s extremely happy now! Lessons learned to all bands out there for you vintage collectors. Keep them locked up and keep them in a safe place, when they are unattended. Don’t think that someone won’t grab them when you’re not around.

Report: Tom Petty to Michele Bachman, “Ummmm, maybe you should ask me first before you use my song.”

Remember Jackson Browne sued John McCain for using “Running On Empty” at the rallies without permission? Well, it’s de ja vu all over again. Presidential 2012 hopeful, Michele Bachman just received “Cease and Desist” letter from Tom Petty’s lawyers, ordering her to stop using his song, “American Girl” at her rallies.

More on the story, here.

When will people respect copyright and understand it?

Report: Mudcrutch hope to be a full time band…not just a one off reunion…

Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench hope the reunited Mudcrutch will be a full time band, to be a real band. Not a one off reunion tour type of thing. In the 70’s Tom Petty’s previous band, Mudcrutch was shortlived but they are back possibly full time. Mudcrutch will play a bunch of California dates, but hopefully do way more after the Heartbreakers tour.

Billboard reports:

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003788232

Why bring Mudcrutch back after all these years even the band never made an album? Well, I’m sure Petty’s original vision with Mudcrutch was to be a succesful touring band to make an album all the time. But since the band broke up, that’s what made the Heartbreakers.

I’m willing to bet that Tom Petty’s dream was to make Mudcrutch big and huge, not the Heartbreakers. Petty’s been wanting to make Mudcrutch big ever since but never had the opportunity until now.

BREAKING NEWS: Tom Petty announces Mudcrutch reunion with original members…

Tom Petty just announced the official reunion of his former shortlived band before the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch with it’s original members. The Mudcrutch lineup includes Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Tom Leadon, and Randall Marsh.

In 1974 Mudcrutch left their hometown of Gainesville, Florida to California in search of a record deal because of Tom Petty’s dream of being signed to a major label. The band had difficulty finding a label that would accept their music and later a label named “Shelter Records” signed the band. They released a single titled “Depot Street” backed with “Wild Eyes” but it didn’t chart. While the band was trying to record their first album back in those days, it didn’t go well and the band disbanded. So their first album never got made.

After all these years, Mudcrutch has finally got the opportunity to get together to make an album (with old and new material) and tour to follow it. The debut Mudcrutch album will hit stores April 29th.

The band Mudcrutch will not do a world tour, they will only play a bunch of dates in California.
