RIP: Estelle Getty 1923 – 2008

Estelle Getty the legendary TV sitcom star of “The Golden Girls” passed away at 84 years old. She died around early Tuesday morning at 5:30 a.m. due to a advanced dementia. She died at her Hollywood Boulevard home.

Getty starred alongside Sylvester Stallone in the comedy “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot” which she plays a mother of a detective who she helps fights crime with.

RIP: Larry Harmon aka Bozo the Clown 1925 – 2008

Bozo the Clown, real name, Larry Harmon who bought the rights of Bozo character from creator Alan W. Livingston and Capitol Records. Bozo the Clown first started his fame doing spoken word albums. Pinto Colvig first did the voices of Bozo the Clown for the records until Larry Harmon bought the character. As Larry Harmon made the Bozo character more popular, it grew into TV shows. Larry Harmon died of congestive heart failure, he was 83.

RIP: Ruslana Korshunova 1987 – 2008

A 20 year old Kazakh supermodel named Ruslana Korshunova committed suicide last Saturday afternoon by jumping off a Manhatten apartment building in NYC where she was living. The incident happened around 2:30 in the afternoon. She can be seen on the cover of Vogue magazine on a regular basis. Her modeling was noticed by Debbie Jones who thought she looked something from a fairy tale so they tracked her down and made her a famous supermodel.

While life can be crazy and can get you down pretty easily, suicide is never the answer folks. There is always profesional help you can go for before you risk going suicidal. 20 years old is too young, don’t let this be you.

RIP: George Carlin 1937 – 2008

George Carlin, a legendary icon and stand up comedian known for his counterculture jokes on life and language died of heart failure Sunday, he was 71. George had a history of heart trouble, he was staying at St. John’s Health Center for care, he was complaining of chest pain and died later that evening. Before then he performed a standup comic performance at a Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. George has been a longtime standup comic, he has made quite a bit of comic albums on CD, appeared quite a lot on TV, and appeared as a cameo in many comedy Hollywood films as well. He often appeared on a regular basis on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno. George won four Emmy Awards for best comedy spoken word albums.

R.I.P.: Tim Russert 1950 – 2008

Tim Russert, an NBC News bureau chief and the moderator of “Meet the Press”, died today of a heart attack. He was 58. Russert was recording voice overs for “Meet the Press” this Sunday but collapsed while doing it. Russert can be seen on “The Today Show” in the mornings on a daily basis mostly giving his opinions and thoughts on politics, he can also be seen on various talk shows for MSNBC as well. In 2008, Time Magazine named him one of the most influential people in the world.

RIP: Bo Diddley 1928 – 2008

Bo Diddley, a legendary rock pioneer is known as a powerful and unique guitar player, he has also played custom made electric guitars with a unique rectangle shape such as the one you see above. He is one of the founding fathers of rock n’ roll music. He died today after battling months of ill health after a heart failure, he was 79. He died at his home in Archer, Florida.

After all these years, Bo Diddley never stopped doing what he loved, playing his music and performing live.

RIP: Utah Phillips 1935 – 2008

Folk singer, storyteller, and activist Bruce “Utah” Phillips died last Friday of congrestive heart failure. Utah Phillips died in his home town of Nevada City, California, he was 73 years old. Utah Phillips has been known to collaborate on music with other folk musicians such as Ani Difranco, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, and Tom Waits who recorded songs with him.

Utah Phillips also used to play gigs at our very own Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs back in the old days.

RIP: Sydney Pollack 1934 – 2008

Legendary actor and film director, Sydney Pollack was made famous by making such memorable hit films with films such as “The Firm” starring Tom Cruise, “Random Hearts” starring Harrison Ford, “Sabrina” also starring Harrison Ford, and his most popular directed film “Tootsie” starring Dustin Hoffman. He also directed other such films as “Absence of Malice”, “Havana”, and “Out of Africa”.

Other than being a director of his own films, he is also an actor where he played small roles in most of his films he directed himself and he also appeared in many other films that aren’t directed by himself. His acting can be seen in movies such as Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut”, and his latest acting role was that he played in “Michael Clayton” starring George Clooney.

Sydney Pollack diagnosed with cancer about 9 months ago and been battling it ever since. He passed away yesterday on Memorial Day surrounded by his family, he died at his home in Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles, California. He was 73.

So sad! Such an amazing talent! He is a great actor and a great film maker. Another great talent gone!
