Film Review: “Thor: The Dark World”

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins

Directed by:  Alan Taylor

Today, I decided to check out “Thor: The Dark World” and here is my review…

Plot/synopsis: The plot to this movie is pretty simple and straightforward. Just continues from the first “Thor” film about saving Earth from evil beings. This time there are evil beings known as the Dark Elves who wants to send the universe into Darkness by using a weapon called the Aether. Thor reunites with Jane Foster so she can help destroy the Aether but instead the Aether takes over her body. The Dark Elves wants Jane ’cause she has the Aether inside of her body. Later, Thor teams up with his evil brother, Loki so they can help destroy the Aether and they can help save the 9 realms of Asgard (which Earth being one of them).

I’m not too big on Marvel superheros. There are only very few Marvel superheros that I am big fans of. The only Marvel superheros that I am big fans of are the Wolverine, The Punisher, Iron Man, Captain American, Hulk and of course, Thor.

I enjoyed, “Thor: The Dark World”. It’s just a fun and exciting movie just like the first one was. Just your typical popcorn-action film with impressive visuals and effects. The story was entertaining and watchable but the ending was too predictable, though. I like the action scenes in this movie. There are more action scenes in this movie than the last one. The entire cast did a good job like usual but Tom Hiddleston steals the show here. Hiddleston as Loki is badass. I am noticing that the Thor movies wants to mix action and comedy together. There are a lot of humor throughout these movies.

“Thor: The Dark World” was pretty good. Nothing mind blowing or amazing but just entertaining. I know this review is a short one ’cause there isn’t a lot of things to be said about it. It is recommended to check out if you’re a fan of Marvel or superhero films.

I’ll give it a two thumbs up.

Cool Video: “Hitchcock” trailer is here, and surprisingly looks very good too!

I was skeptical of this, but after seeing this trailer, the film looks promising. Anthony Hopkins looks great as Hitchcock, that guy can play anything that throws at him. I’ll be there for this one, I think. The film is about the making of “Psycho”, it’s not really a straight up biopic.

Netflix Pick (DVD): The Rite

Last night, I finally saw the movie, “The Rite” starring Anthony Hopkins. I was meant to see this film in theater when it first came out but I never got around to it.

Plot/Synopsis:

Michael, the son of a funeral director grows indifferent to his father and joins a Seminary. On his way to the course completion, he is overwhelmed by a strong lack of faith. His religious beliefs are further jolted when he sees a young girl haplessly dying in a road accident for whom he reluctantly performs the ritual to absolve her sins. His mentor still believes in him and urges him to go to Italy to take an exorcism course hoping that he it would strengthen his faith in Christianity. In Italy he attends a session from Father Xavier who soon becomes aware of his skepticism. As a result he sends him to an eminent Jesuit exorcist, Father Lucas, whose ways though questionable are quite effective. He witnesses the exorcism of a sixteen year old girl but still seems unconvinced. Father Lucas explains him that it takes multiple sessions over a long stretch of time to completely free a victim from the omen…

This movie didn’t get great reviews by critics and movie fans, it’s a movie you either love or hate, but I absolutely loved it. I know there are a lot of movies on Exorcism, but I think this one is the best one. It’s more realistic than the others. It’s a horror film that’s actually kind of creepy and there are parts where you jump a lot. I thought the writing and acting were both phenomenal. I wasn’t bored watching this movie, and I did sit through the whole thing. This film wants to make demonic possession and exorcism to seem more real and believable.

William Freidkin’s “The Exorcist” is a good movie, but it had minor problems. Some of the stuff in “The Exorcist”, can be pretty whacky, but “The Rite” was more true to exorcism. Of course, I was most impressed with Anthony Hopkins acting in this film. Anthony kills it with the acting like usual. I’ve been such a huge fan of Anthony Hopkins for years. He can play every role well, but I think this is his best role behind, Hannibal Lechter. There is no gore in, “The Rite”. That’s how you make a horror film scary, with no gore. I’d say “The Rite” is the best new horror film of this year.

Check it out when you get a chance.

Film Review: Thor

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins

Directed by: Kenneth Branagh

Well today, I decided to go to the movies for something to do. Get out of the house for the day. I’ve been wanting to see the new “Thor” movie for a long time. Now it’s finally here, I went and saw it. Here is my review.

Plot/Synopsis: In 965 A.D., King Odin (Hopkins) sends his warrior son, Thor, from Asgard to Earth, in our present time, forcing him to live with humans. Of course, when Thor first arrived in Earth in our present time, he had a lot to learn and didn’t understand Earth. So Natalie Portman’s character, Jane Foster, tries to guide him living on Earth. She becomes a love interest for Thor. One of the most dangerous villains from Thor’s home land of Asgard, comes to invade Earth to try and kill Thor. Thor tries to save Earth from his enemies.

As a kid, I used to love reading Thor comics, so I was already a big fan of the character. I was a little worried that this film might suck since most Marvel movies aren’t that good, but, I was actually very impressed with Marvel’s “Thor”. This film actually told a superhero story, the right way. It stayed true to the comics.

The casting was really great and the acting was not that bad. I thought Chris Hemsworth as Thor, was a very good choice. Anthony Hopkins has been my favorite actor for years. Anthony always pulls off really good acting chops no matter what role he does, that guy can do anything.

I hate 3D movies. Most 3D movies are pretty bad, but I thought a 3D, “Thor” was very fitting. The 3D effects were very cool on Thor and that’s what the character needed to be cool. The special effects and the CGI made it feel like you were watching a movie, and not a cartoon. The special effects in the film was crazy.

There is something for everyone in this film. Action, suspense, comedy, romance, etc. It’s all there. I think this is the best Marvel superhero movie out of them all. They did a great job with “Thor”. I am so looking forward to the sequel already! I would go see this flick in theater again!

Score for “Thor” = **** (4 stars as in “excellent”)

Film Review: The Wolfman

Starring: Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins

Directed by: Joe Johnston

Today on a day off of work, I decided to go to the mall, to check out the new “Wolfman” movie and to do some shopping. Yes, I did pick up the new “Bioshock 2” video game and a few other little things.

Here is my review:

Plot/synopsis: This film is a remake of the 1941 famous horror film, “The Wolf Man” which the original was directed by George Waggner and starred, Claude Raines as Sir John Talbot and Lon Chaney as the Lawrence Talbot/the Wolf Man. The remake stars Benicio Del Torro as Lawrence Talbot/the Wolfman and Anthony Hopkins plays Sir John Talbot. The remake pretty much has the same plot as the original. It is where Lawrence Talbot (Del Toro) returns home to visit his father after a terrible family tragedy. Lawrence is bitten by something which he ends up turning into a werewolf himself. The only difference is that the original doesn’t go for the search of Talbot’s brother like the remake did.

This film is getting mixed opinions with critics online. It’s another one of those films that you either love or hate. Me? I liked it quite a lot!!! While the story and plot is a little different from the original, the film did stay true to the 1941 version! In my opinion, the remake is very much like an action movie more than horror. Benicio Del Toro is an actor who don’t play leading roles much. He mostly played supporting roles throughout his career. I believe this is Benicio’s first big leading role in a mainstream film. So people should respect this movie for that. I thought Benicio did a fine job. Anthony Hopkins is always an amazing actor as usual as he did a fine job in this movie too. It was brilliant seeing Benicio and Anthony together.

It’s very much like the original ’cause the movie is dark. It does borrow some scenes from the original, but the reason this version is a little different ’cause I believe Joe Johnston just wanted his vision. Remakes don’t have to be exactly the same. Rob Zombie made the “Halloween” series totallly different from the originals and he greatily succeeded. So don’t get mad at Joe for making, “The Wolf Man” a little different. In the remake you still get to see the Wolf Man running around in dark fog and seeing gypsies like the original, and yes, you get to see the Wolfman falling in love with a woman like the original. Most of the movie stayed true to the original except they changed the ending a little bit.

What makes it better that the great Danny Elfman scored the movie which the score is awesome. Plus, the sounds effects of the movie were pretty loud and insane. It’s not a bad movie that people are making it out to be. Benicio was so cool in this and I hope he stars in more horror flicks ’cause he’s good at it!

Score for “The Wolf Man” remake = *** (3 stars as in “excellent”)
