The Nine Inch Nails has been an unsigned band since dropping out of major labels in 2007. The band has been finding other ways to release music instead of releasing albums on CD. They’ve been releasing their music through the internet and stuff like that.
Read this interesting article, Trent admits that the Nine Inch Nails becoming a major label band was the biggest mistake in his life and his band’s career.

While I agree with Trent, I don’t think today’s major label acts in the mainstream will ever drop out of major labels. Do you think acts like Metallica, Ac/Dc or U2 would drop out of them to go back to an unsigned band? No. They won’t because they are too addicted and obsessed with the fame and the money.
Like Trent said you don’t need a label to put out records and to make money.
There are ways of becoming a successful band without a label. The Smashing Pumpkins has dropped the major labels and they just release records independently. Indie labels are fine, but the major ones you don’t need.
You can have a good music career, without agents, A&R reps, record producers, etc. getting in your face all the time. Do everything yourself like Trent Reznor does. Fuck the major labels.
