Thought: If there was ever a Dark Tower film…Hugh Jackman would be perfect for Roland Deschain…

Most all Stephen King novels have been made into films, everything from TV mini series to major big screen pictures. While Stephen King movies are still being made to this day, one book series I would like to see get made into big theaterical release films is “The Dark Tower” series. Everytime I read the Dark Tower novels or the graphic Marvel comics of the series, I always picture in my head actor Hugh Jackman playing Roland Deschain the Gunslinger. Hugh Jackman is just a perfect fit for the character, in the 7 novels you’ve seen drawings of Roland and through the comics, if you look at the pictures and compare him to Jackman, you can see they both look almost exactly alike.

If there was ever a Dark Tower film series in the future, I can see no one else playing Roland Deschain but Hugh Jackman. The character seems to belong to Jackman just like Wolverine belongs to him. So anyone in Hollywood out there who plans to do the “Dark Tower” films, I would strongly suggest Jackman in the leading role as Roland Deschain. It would work and the first “Dark Tower” film would be a box office smash if Jackman was in it.

The Dark Tower films need to get made soon. The Dark Tower series are so damn popular that the movies would make the Harry Potter films look bad.

  1. This is really weird. I was watching Hang Em’ High with clint eastwood the other day and I noticed a resemblance between a young clint and hugh jackman. Then, I thought, man he would be a good Roland if they ever made a Dark Tower movie and even said something to my girlfriend about it. Then I stumbled upon this while looking for Dark Tower pictures. Just wanted to say, I agree with you 100%

  3. I can’t agree with having Hugh Jackman as Roland. He is too big of a celebrity to do the character justice. I think, for the movie, there should be no famous actors and should focus more on story, rather than cast. If a member of the ka-tet had to be a celebrity, i think is should be Eddie, but not Hugh Jackman.

  5. I’d like to agree that Hugh Jackman would make the perfect Roland, except for the fact that Hugh is just a little too, well, pretty. I’d LOVE to see a series of theatrical releases for the Dark Tower, though. I am a new fan of the series and have just finished Wizard and Glass. Longtime Stephen King fan, and I’m glad I started to read this series.

  9. Well, I’ll agree that Hugh Jackman probably does look a lot like the young Roland. But, even in the books theres one point where Jake sees a movie poster of some sort of Clint Eastwood movie. So, I would say Clint Eastwood because I think when Stephen King wrote it he meant for Roland and Clint to look a lot alike.

  11. Clint would be a good one-however he is getting on in years now and I don’t think it would work now-tho he does look to be weathering well. I thought Viggo Mortensen(Hidalgo,Lord of the Rings) would work as well.

  13. although the thought of having hugh jackman as roland is quite enticing, i’d have to say that roland should be a lesser or unknown actor, perhaps even a completely new actor. we have to consider the scope of these books and how perfectly all of us want them to be as a movie production. so if there were ever a perfect blend of an unknown actor and the look of roland, with exceptional acting talent, then i say let it be done. however there are many actors out there now who could play roland, christian bale comes to mind and so has vigo mortensen for the most obvious reason of possessing blue eyes, which roland must have.

  15. To play roland, I tought christian bale too. what do you think about it?
to play detta-odetta-susannah…halle berry (she looked so crazy in gothika!!!)

  17. Hugh Jackman is Wolverine. Viggo is Aragorn. Please don’t Detta/Odetta my heroes like this. I agree with Neal McDonough as Roland (the search that landed me here, thankee) for the eyes and the fact that he basically almost played Roland in Tin Man, anyway.

(Although, in my Dark Tower/Oz movie poster, Mr. Deschain would be the stuffy guy (red hands and all) and probably in mid-commala, leaving Eddie as the Tin Man (think Andy) and Susannah in the blue check dress with Oy in her basket. Jake would be (wimeweh) the Lion. Had I any artistic ability I would’ve made this by now, all against a dark tower and beam-road back ground. yummy. Please somebody. Take. Run. Share.)

Anyway, hands down, the deciding factor in Roland-casting has gotta be the faded blue bombardier’s eyes. Hair can be dyed. Weight can be lost.
Contacts won’t capture, I say, the true blue necessary here.

And I reiterate that Viggo is out because he was Tolkien’s Roland.
Let some one else do King’s. As long as it’s not that dude from Wings.
Or freakin’ Rob Lowe. Or Nick Cage . . . Sorry, Nick. Salad days are over.

All that said, as long as they don’t decide to opt against theatrical and go mini-series (O, DISCORDIA!) I’ll be happy just to see it on the screen.

  19. Eddie – Adrian Brody

I can see Mortensen, especially because of his level of solemnity and violence in Eastern Promises. Which would parallel Clint’s intensity. And his potential for expressiveness in Lord of the Rings.

The problem with Jackman, even though he has potential, is that he is pretty. If someone could rough him, teach him to be mean, it would make more sense.

  21. I would definitely have to say that out of those listed Viggo Mortensen would be the best choice. Who cares if he was Aragon so many actors have played numerous roles.

To add to that I’m not sure getting a someone of celebrity status is a bad idea either. I think because we see them on the tabloids we all of a sudden forget that most of these people are extremely talented. I for one would take talent over a new face, just because its a new face, any day.

If a not as well known celebrity is required for Roland. How about Josh Holloway who plays Sawyer on Lost. First of all because he already has worked with Damon Lindelof on Lost, great working relationship. Second, in Lost he plays a con man whom everyone hates but when you get to know him you warm up. The Dark Tower series mentions several times how the characters hate Roland but feel drawn to him. I think he would make a great choice. The only problem with Josh Holloway is he is in his thirties. Roland was much older so I’m still leaning toward Viggo.

Neil Mcdonough is out. I mean come on people he is a horrible actor period. the end. His name coincides with low-budget production.

  23. I have to say I am delighted to see so many people wanting movie productions of these fantastic novels. I started reading the Dark Tower series when I was four months pregnant and had them all read in 4 months, I just love them. As far as the actor who would best play Roland, I think all of the mentioned actors have certain qualities that could land them the role. I always thought Hugh would be great, but where are the blue eyes? Viggo is amazing, but so recognizable. And Neil Mcdonough has the eyes and the look, but I don’t think his acting is strong enough to have such a challenging role bestowed upon him. I feel like there is someone else we are all forgetting…

  26. I think Roland is definitely the hardest to cast. I still can’t think of one Actor I can imagine to be Roland yet, but Hugh Jackman is feasible as a candidate. If I could though I would combine David Gandy’s physical looks with Aaron Eckhart’s acting.

I think for Eddie James Franco would be pretty close, he’s got humor, that druggy look, and a bit on the prettyboy side. I guess they’ll need to put some hazel contacts in him though.

For Susannah, Halle Berry would be a really perfect candidate if she wasn’t so egotistical, and it comes across through her acting.

My least favorite character was Jake, and I have an even harder time picking out him because there’s no prominent child stars today, but I’m sure they can find someone.

For Jack Mort/man in Black I’d probably pick Johnny Depp, but I can see Kevin Spacey’s acting fitting better, just not his look.

For the Red King, I would pick Jack Nicholson (if he lost some weight) or Gary Busey.

  28. What about Hugh Laurie? I mean, I know it’s hard to see him play the dark, cold, and menacing Roland because of House…but think about it. He has the blue eyes and the rough face to pull it off.

  30. I’ve always thought Hugh Laurie would make a good Roland, my dream cast would be Hugh Laurie as Roland, Wentworth Miller as Eddie, Thandie Newton as Susannah (Did you see her in Crash? Perfect!), and I would have liked to see Cameron Bright play Jake but he is much too old now. So I have no idea for Jake.

  32. Hugh Laurie is Roland. Roland is skinny but tough from years on the road. Roland has blue eyes. Hugh Laurie is skinny but when you google him and see him in a t-shirt you see he’s strong, he’s got muscles. And blue eyes.

As for Eddie, I’ve always felt it’s Casey Affleck or Joseph Gordon-Levitt. If you’ve seen Gone Baby Gone or Brick you understand those picks.

Susannah I’ve always felt would be the easiest to cast. There are four or five black female actors who could pull off the role. Halle Barry, Thandie Newton and Rosario Dawson could all do it.

Oh there is one role no one ever talks about but I really think I have cast already. Cort is Brendan Gleeson. If he got in the shape he was in when he did Troy he would be perfect. Anyways that’s my two cents.

  34. I can really see Viggo Mortensen as Roland. No question. As for Eddie, Casey Affleck is a popular choice and I agree, he seems to have the perfect look for him and he’s a pretty decent actor too. As for Susannah, I really don’t have much of an idea but I don’t think Halle Berry’s a powerful enough actress and I don’t think she could pull off Odetta or Detta, I just can’t see it. Sure she’s a beauty, but that’s where it stops for me. I have no idea about Jake either.. there aren’t many prominent GOOD child actors at the moment, so the director would need a relative unknown who can really act.

I think Mr. Eastwood should totally cameo as Cort, he has the rough edges to him that are perfect and he has the look which the right make-up would just finish off completely. Oy could be made with CGI and models, and Andy Serkis could provide the voice. ’nuff said.

And as a leaving note; Neal McDonough? Are you fucking kidding me?

  36. Honestly, I wouldnt make the film at all, for two reasons. Firstly, apart from the shining, Steven King books have a very poor record at being turned properly into films. econdly, Steven King wrote the book based on the looks of Clint Eastwood who is of course to old to take part in the filming of the Dark Tower. Id 100% agree that there should only be no name actors, the likes of viggo morteson, hugh laurie and hugh jackman are too recognisable and ultimately typecast from other role. Leave it where it is, in our imaginations. Or clone Eastwood. Closest represenation to the Dark tower is the good the bad and the ugly, Lee van Cleef wouldve made a good Jonas?
