Dear Guitarists and Bass Players: Cut your strings after changing them at your gigs…

I am amazed, that there are too many guitarists and bass players who don’t bother to cut their strings after changing them. You know, the type of guitarists that will just leave their guitar strings hanging way out of the tuning pegs. They walk around on stage with their guitars, the end of the strings that hang out will bounce around as you move around, not good. I understand why some of them don’t cut strings, because at a gig, if they trim the end of the string to make it shorter, it ruins the tuning, and it takes them even longer to tune if they trim the string.

Why is it a bad idea to leave your strings hanging out at the headstock of your guitar?

1) It looks silly as hell with the strings moving around, and bouncing back & forth 2) It’s very dangerous, the end of your strings can be pretty sharp, as they can easily poke someone in the eye or cut someone, or you could hurt yourself.

They don’t trim the strings ’cause they’re too lazy to tune. It is also evidence that they are not good at tuning their guitars if they don’t trim.  That’s why you should bring a pair of wire cutters to your gigs. It only takes a few minutes to cut the end of your strings off so they won’t be hanging out. This is also the reason why you need to get good at tuning your guitars, so that you don’t waste so much time tuning.

I always trim the strings. It’s a good thing to do.

Tuning the guitar is not so hard and it can be quick to do with a lot of practice. These days, I’ve been learning to tune the guitar standard tuning by ear, without an electronic tuner. It’s a good thing to do to train your ear.

I’ll admit that the negative criticism toward myself as a person and musician, was difficult on me…

Over the years, I’ve got some pretty hateful feedback and criticism toward myself as a person and as a musician online, through various local music forums and social networking sites. I still get negative criticism even to this day, but I just learn to get used to it and ignore it. Although, I will admit though, that I wish I had gotten a better response and wish people treated me better, but what are you gonna do ya know? This is the world wide web, when you put yourself out there, you can’t expect everyone to treat you so kind.

People will think they have the right to be honest about other people, whenever they want because the internet gives them that freedom. That’s the problem. There’s two different type of critics: 1) The honest critics 2) The bullying critics.  There are some people that will think they are honest about you, and some will just bully you for their own amusement. That’s one of the only reasons why there are too many negative people online. There are too many childish people on here, with terrible communication skills on the internet. When one person sees this person bullying some musician, picking on them and making fun of them, other people will join in on the fun, even if they don’t know anything about me.

That’s why bullying me online, has become pretty popular and it’s all over the net. It inspires people to join in because they think it’s fun and they have nothing else better to do with their time. People become addicted and obsessed with the same musician, that they won’t stop until they get old and their fingers start to fall off. They’re like little kids being told to stop by their Mommy and Daddy, but they won’t listen, ya know? People mostly do the internet bullying under anonymous accounts, so I won’t be able to find out who they really are, but I’m usually good at finding out who they really are ’cause their writing style is so recognizable and easy. Of course, there are those bullying people who are not anonymous, they come out and do it, upfront.

I will be a target of internet bullying for the rest of my life. No matter how good of a guy I am, no matter how nice I will be. Sad, but that’s the way it is. I’m a human being and I have feelings too. I don’t mean to talk about the topic of internet bullying and haters, but since “bullying” is so huge in the news lately, that’s what makes me want to be more open about this stuff. I guess this is my way of joining in on the “anti-bullying” campaign. Hoping it will inspire the critics to think what they’re doing is wrong and they should shut their mouths and think how they treat people. I don’t only get bullying from people on the internet, I even get it from other musicians around the local music scene. I’m sure you’ve seen it.

I’m not just trying to defend myself. This is for other people or musicians who have been victims of bullying too. You gotta learn to be tough and don’t feed the haters. Learn to stay above and don’t let other people think they have the right to say what they want about you. They don’t have the right.

EDIT TO ADD: I’ve written a few original songs in the past about bullying. “Mr. Tough Guy” is one of them, and “Backstabbers” is another one.

The WWE doesn’t need John Cena to keep the business alive and going strong…

Ever since the Attitude Era ended, and the WWE switched to PG rating, family/friendly stuff, they’ve been shoving John Cena in our faces. Cena has been getting way too much TV time. They kept pushing him to the masses. Cena has too many fans everywhere. Like I said once before, Cena is most popular with little kids and women of all ages. When people hate Cena, it’s mostly guys around my age who hate Cena.

The WWE is a billion dollar business. How do they make their money? Well, arena ticket sales for starters, merchandise sales (like t-shirts, posters, etc.), ppv buys, sponsors from advertisements, etc. That’s how they make their money so they can pay the superstars who entertain people and pay the TV crew who gets the shows going. They also pay for all the equipment and all that behind the scenes stuff. They have a team of writers for the TV storylines for RAW & Smackdown. The storylines you see on TV are what helps hype up the upcoming PPV events. So they need to have superstars that have a lot of potential, and the chemistry to help make the WWE a success.

They keep shoving Cena in our faces ’cause it’s him that keeps the WWE strong. I wish the WWE would settle down on Cena, and start pushing some of the other guys. They have been pushing some of the other guys to the main event like CM Punk and Randy Orton, but I have feeling those guys are going to get buried and they’ll get sent back to the mid-card pretty quickly. WWE is known to destroying great characters who had main event potential, they’ve been doing this for years. I just want WWE to start pushing some of the younger guys but these days, it’s all Cena, Cena, Cena.

This is why I almost gave up on WWE. I’m tired of Cena being the superhero all the time, like most people. In my opinion, Cena doesn’t do a good job playing the good guy/superhero character, or what wrestling fans call good guy wrestlers, “babyfaces”. There have been better babyface wrestlers in the past like The Rock, Stone Cold, Ultimate Warrior, Macho Man, and of course, Hulk Hogan, in the earlier days. They did the good guy thing pretty well. Cena is just boring. I don’t understand the popularity of him.

I’ll admit that Cena is a workhorse and he does put on entertaining matches sometimes, all I ask for the WWE is to give someone else a chance to shine. When Cena retires or takes a long time off, the WWE will be in trouble then. I respect the WWE, the business, and the performers. I just want the show to be better. They work hard for what they do, they do a good job at it and I respect, Vince McMahon. Vince didn’t become a billionaire for nothing. I just wish he wouldn’t leave the “wrestling” part out of things. They don’t have to go back to the Attitude Era, just bring back the good wrestling and I’ll be happy. WWE is all family entertainment now.

Talking in between songs at gigs: Here are some do’s and don’t do’s…

At gigs, I’ve seen bands and musicians talk in between songs the right way and some of them do it the wrong way. Keep in mind, that live audiences are human beings. They can hear every word you say on the stage and they aren’t stupid. If they don’t like what you say, they’ll let you know. If you don’t want to get boo’ed or get heckled by someone from the audience, here are some rules on how to play a successful gig that’ll make the audience walk out with a great night.

Things you should do, talking in between songs:

  • Name the song title, and tell a little story behind it. What the song is about, how you wrote it and how you inspired it. Audiences like this kind of stuff.
  • Try to be entertaining, funny, and smile a lot.
  • Eye contact at the crowd, when talking in between songs.
  • Talk to the crowd as if you’re in an actual conversation. I’ve seen plenty of local bands ignore the crowd when they try to talk to them on stage. If you want to win an audience respect, respond back to them.
  • Try to teach them lyrics for sing alongs. This is hard to do but it can be done if done right. Give it a try.

Things you shouldn’t do, talking in between songs:

  • Don’t be a jackass or an egomaniac.
  • Don’t talk too long. I’ve seen musicians where they go on and on about stuff for about 10 minutes straight, just shut up and play the damn song already!
  • Don’t be too negative and offensive. Swearing is okay but it depends on the gig and the venue.
  • Don’t be confrontational toward the audience, if they don’t respond to your songs or they walk away from your set. I’ve seen it happen before. Big turn off.
  • Don’t respond to the hecklers. If you are getting heckled, if someone shouts out,  “You suck”, just ignore it and play.

Talking in between songs is important, in my opinion. There are a lot of bands that don’t talk at all, some of them just play one song after another, but that’s okay. If you don’t want to talk to the crowd, that’s your decision, but you could get more fans if you interact with the crowd more.

If you’ve seen my gigs in the past, you’ve probably seen me talk to the crowd, check out some of my youtube videos of my live performances for proof on that.

The 10 Best Movie Moms of all time…

In celebration of Mother’s Day tomorrow, I thought it would be fun to name the best movie Moms of all times. Here is a top ten list in no particular order.

Sarah Connor (The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day) – In the first Terminator we get a normal Sarah Connor, but in the 2nd one, she turns into a violent badass. She can’t be left off the list.

Ellen Griswold (The National Lampoon’s series) – Clark maybe a great character but Ellen is an important part of the Lampoon’s series too.

Sally Field in “Forrest Gump” & “Mrs. Doubtfire” (tie) – Sally always played a great Mom, no matter what movie she has done.

Ronnie Neary “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” – This has always been my favorite Spielberg movie. This movie is very powerful. Every time I watch, it was the mother of that kid that I payed the most attention to.

Diane Freeling “Poltergeist 1 & 2” – Without Jo Beth Williams, these films wouldn’t have been interesting.

Elaine Miller “Almost Famous” – Elaine was played by the great, Frances McDormand. This has always been one of my favorite movies.

Momma “Throw Momma From the Train” & Momma Fratteli “The Goonies” (tie) – This great comedy starring Billy Crystal and Danny Devito, the Momma was played by the late & great, Anne Ramsey. She also played the mother in, “The Goonies”, the mother of the Fratteli brothers.

Lorraine Baines  “Back to The Future” – This was a great character, couldn’t be left off the list!

Adrian “Rocky” series – Played by Talia Shire, I couldn’t leave her out.

Leticia Musgrove “Monsters Ball” –This has always been one of my favorite drama films of all times and it’s Halle Berry’s best acting role, in which she won an Oscar from.

I’m sure I’m forgetting many more movie Moms, but these are my favorite ones, I can think of at the top of my head.

More on gay marriage…

I don’t understand, why it is so bad to have differences of opinion on gay marriage. I don’t understand, why it makes people bad guys because we don’t agree with it and a marriage should be between a man and a woman. When you disagree with it, it makes you the asshole. I understand it is all about equality and gay rights. You already have the rights to be gay all you want to.

When you see people defending straight marriage and not agreeing with same sex marriage, it’s not that we hate gays. We totally respect them, even I respect homosexuals.

When people stand up for marriage, it’s all about what God intended marriage to be in the bible. It’s a religion thing, of course. This is the only reason why some find gay marriage wrong and offensive. just the way I am looking at it.

WWE RAW world tour last night…

Last night, I went to the Glens Falls Civic Center to see WWE RAW World tour event. It’s a house show, so it’s not going to be aired on TV. There were no cameras there. What are house shows? It’s a wrestling term used to describe live wrestling events that aren’t televised. They don’t follow the current storylines on TV, and just have matches. They have the good guy wrestlers win most of the matches as a way to keep younger fans happy.

It was a fun show though. Nice time. The WWE RAW guys did a good job. Who wrestled in matches last night? Well, here is a list of the Superstars that appeared: Zach Ryder, Dolph Ziggler, Santino Marella, R Truth, Kofi Kingston, Beth Phoenix, Layla, The Miz, John Cena, CM Punk, Lord Tensai and others.

No Brock Lesnar appearance, of course but I bought his t-shirt they were selling at the merchandise area. I also bought a CM Punk shirt too. Huge fan of both of those guys.

I am amazed on how popular John Cena really is. He has fans everywhere. Mostly little kids and women of all ages dig him. I am no Cena fan and it was fun booing the hell out of him last night. As I boo’ed Cena, kids looked at me, lol.

It was a nice time. I like seeing WWE shows live because, I am a wrestling nut. I respect the business, and they do a good job, entertaining people.

Edit to add: More information on House shows, here.

Everyone either wants to be famous or they think they are famous…

One thing, I find interesting about the Internet, is all the crazy delusions and fantasy worlds that goes around people. A lot of people, want to think they are stars these days, or they just want to be. This post is not aimed at just musicians and bands. This goes for other people who think they have a career in something. This goes for bodybuilder trainers in YouTube, models in Facebook, local politicians, professional photographers, etc. Whatever it is you do, everyone wants to think they are great at something, so they promote themselves to death on the Internet as a way to get their talent out there more.

I understand that these guys want to publicly show off their talents. If you like what you do, please try to understand that the Internet is not going to help you make the big time. Some of the guys even think they are in the big time when they are not. It’s very rare that the Internet makes people famous. If fame is what you want, you must do more work beyond the Internet. Again, this is not just for bands, any career.

Go back to college to study your career dream more, take some classes. Do a lot of reading. It’s a long road to be successful at something and sitting there on the Internet is not going to pull it.

Some will accuse me of thinking I am famous or wanting to be famous, but for you longtime readers, you would know I never thought of myself this way. I leave my ego at the door. The Internet makes it easier for people to pretend they are a celebrity, when they are not. It’s crazy. Everyone wants to think they are a star, because, I blame it on gossip sites like TMZ and such.

A lot of folks on here who think they have a career, think they are something important and special. In other words, they are self centered. They just want to be at the center of your attention at all times, and Facebook is evidence of that. People who run their own like fan pages are crazy. I just read them for kicks, I don’t post on like pages too much.

Going to WWE RAW “World Tour” event tonight…

Yep. Tonight I’m going to a live WWE show, “RAW World Tour”, tonight at the Glens Falls Civic Center. It’s a house show, so it’s not going to be a televised event. Still going to be fun ’cause I like seeing WWE live. It’s fun to see all the guys you see on TV live in person. I’m looking forward to booing the hell out of John Cena tonight. Hopefully, Brock Lesnar will be in Glens Falls to perform. I doubt it ’cause WWE did a storyline with Brock that he quit the company (storyline, not real), so it wouldn’t make sense if he showed up tonight, but ya never know. Like they all say, anything is possible in the WWE. Lesnar could do a run in interference during the Cena vs. The Miz match tonight. It’s going to be a nice time, I’m looking forward to tonight. I’m planning to buy a CM Punk t-shirt and the sleeveless Lesnar shirt if they’ll be selling them at the merchandise area. I’m sure they’ll have them for sale there. I like collecting WWE shirts. I have wrestling shirts of Cactus Jack, Undertaker, the Nexus and the Rock. Even though I don’t like the current PG rating, I just appreciate the wrestling business and the performers. I still respect what they do.

Anyway, I’m no longer using Google Chrome. It keeps freezing up my internet every time I launch it. It’s Chrome doing it. Not the hardware or anything like that. So I uninstalled Chrome and now I’m back on Firefox. Firefox don’t seem to be freezing on me at all, so I’m all good now, I think. I’ll stay on FF. Chrome is crap.
