“The Art of Screaming” sounds like a good instructional course for singers…

I’m going to have to look into getting this app for the Ipad, “The Art of Screaming“.

I’m always looking for new ways to improve my singing voice. I do want to sing higher and hopefully learn to scream ’cause I don’t have a very strong voice, but I’m working on it! I like to practice vocal exercises with Metal Method’s “Vocal Power”, while that helps and really works, I need more. “The Art of Screaming App” sounds good.

Just like I want to become a great guitar player someday, I want to be a great singer too. I don’t think I’m that great of a singer now, but I would like to get better. I just sing ’cause it’s fun and I enjoy it. I could give up singing and have someone else sing my songs sure, but I think it’s a rule that if you write your own lyrics and music, you need to sing them yourself, no matter how good or bad your voice sounds.

Report: Rush finally gets nominated for “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” after years of getting snubbed…

The legendary prog rock band, Rush, have been getting snubbed for a nomination at the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” every year, but this time, they finally got one! While I’m happy that Rush finally got the nomination, don’t be surprised if the voters don’t pick them to get inducted though. I’m not getting my hopes up yet, but it would be awesome if they got the induction ’cause they deserve this more than anyone.

I’m also happy that Deep Purple finally got a nod too ’cause they’ve been getting ignored by the Hall of Fame as well. I hope both bands will get it. I also hope Joan Jett, Albert King, and Heart will get it too. Donna Summer have been getting nominated every year but she never got the induction. Hopefully, she’ll get it this time in honor of her death earlier this year.

I hope the Hall of Fame will do the right thing and induct Rush this time, ’cause I’m a huge fan of them as well. I own several of their albums in my collection and have seen them live in concert once.

More on the story, here.

The Foo Fighters, have taken long breaks from the music business before, it’s nothing new…

The Foo Fighters have been known to taking long breaks from the industry every now and then. Now they are taking another one. Why? Even though the band doesn’t really explain, I’m pretty sure Dave wants to focus on the upcoming “Sound City” movie that he’s working on. When that movie hits the theaters, he’s probably gonna do a lot of promotion for it, and stuff. So I’m sure his focus will be on that. Of course, I’m sure Dave will do other musical side projects with other bands, so who knows what he’ll be planning.

I’m hoping Dave will get Them Crooked Vultures back for a second album, ’cause their first one was great. Or maybe Dave will plan a supergroup with Jimmy Page, Jonesy, and Jason, that will be cool too.

With that being said, even though the Foo Fighters are gonna be gone for a while again, Dave won’t be. He will always be around in some way. He’s always doing different projects.

Cool Video: Neil Young & Crazy Horse stomping on stage…

They did something similar during their performance at Central Park over the weekend. Stomping on the stage to make this loud crashing sound. How are they doing this? Well if you notice on the metal floor (not sure what it’s actually called) on the stage, that’s what they’re stomping on. I’m sure they put a bunch of small mics underneath those metal things on the stage to make the stomping loud enough through the speakers. They had that similar metal floor thing on the stage at Central Park and I’m sure they have that on all the Crazy Horse show tours. That’s how they end the song “Walk Like a Giant” on stage so they can make it sound like an actual Giant walking on Earth.

That’s one thing I love about Neil Young & Crazy Horse, they always put on unique and crazy shows. They’re very creative live performers. I wish they would get respected more for this. They’re so underrated. I’m dying to see Neil Young & Crazy Horse in concert myself, if they made a stop around here, I would go!

I’m looking forward to their new album, “Psychedellic Pill” too as you betcha, I will buy it.

Cool Video: What is improvisation? This video will tell ya…

With the previous blog post of bringing up “improvisation” when discussing Neil Young, to those who are new to all this, this youtube videoblogger is right on the money of what “improvisation”, really is. Being able to play what you hear in your head, to keep it small and simple. This is one technique in music I’m trying to improve on and slowly getting better too! I do want to be a “master” improviser at guitar, but it takes time. Like I said before, the key to being good at improvising is memorizing the sound of the notes in your head, by singing along with it and stuff. All that jam band stuff like the Grateful Dead, Phish or DMB, those are all improvising bands. Led Zeppelin were an improvising band during their live concerts back in the 70’s.

“Improv”, I believe is the most overlooked technique in music. Not a lot of guitarists around here improvise and they don’t really have a good ear when they don’t want to admit it. They just noodle around until they hear something good.

When you get good at improvising, and will be able to play everything you hear, that’s when you know that you just became a real musician. This teacher, Andrew Wasson, is one of the best guitar teachers in youtube too. I follow his videos on a regular basis.

Foo Fighters/Neil & Young Crazy at Global Poverty Project in NYC review…

CORRECTION: Neil Young and Crazy Horse did play a few new songs from their upcoming new album, “Psychedellic Pill”. Their song they played, “Walk Like a Giant” is a new song, my bad.

So I watched the live viewing on youtube of the Foo Fighters, Neil Young & Crazy Horse concert at the Global Poverty Project event in NYC. A serious event to raise money for a good cause. I know the Black Keys were a part of this concert too, but I missed their set. I did catch the Foo Fighters and Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The Foo Fighters played a short set, but they were pretty tight. They played mostly their hits, of course, but they were fun to see. My only problem is that Dave talks a bit too much in between songs, and he can get kind of annoying with the crowd. Other than that, they played an incredible set, I am a fan of the Foo Fighters as I own quite a few of their albums in my CD collection.

As for Neil Young & Crazy Horse, they were just phenomenal and they killed it, like Neil usually does. When Neil walked on stage, you don’t see him wearing any fancy clothing, he just wears casual things. Just jeans, a t-shirt and he wore a red flanel coat. It was just Neil and his guitar. Neil Young and the band played mostly recognizable classics. I recognized “Ontario”, “Fuckin’ Up”, “Walk Like A Giant”, “Needle and the Damage Done” (solo acoustic) and “Let the Good Times Roll” (solo acoustic). Of course, they had to close their set with their most famous song, “Keep On Rockin’ In the Free World”, which they had the Foo Fighters and the Black Keys jamming with them on that one.

I love the way Neil performs on stage, ’cause he is a phenomenal lead guitarist. One thing I’m disappointed in that when the Foo Fighters were on stage, the live viewing got like 18,000 views, and when Neil got on stage, the views got lower and lower, all the way down to about 6,000 views or a little under. I mean, really? I’ve also noticed that some of the crowd were leaving Neil’s set as well.

After seeing all that, kind of hit me. Don’t people know good music anymore? Unfortunately not! Neil is a genius, a fucking legend! A rock n’ roll legend and people weren’t interested in watching him? The man is 66 years old, and he can still rock on that fucking stage! After all that talk about discussing “guitar gods”, I will include Neil in that guitar god category. My belief is that people were getting bored of his long guitar jams. Well, that’s tough people! That’s how Neil always played his concerts. He’s been playing like that for the past 30 years or more. Long 15 – 20 minute guitar jams. Just play guitar for a long time, sing a few lyrics, jam some more,  sing a few lyrics, jam some more, etc. That’s Neil.

Why do rock bands sometimes jam that long? It’s called improvisation. The music stops when it wants to. It’s all about using your imagination. Long jams and improvisations were really big back in the 60’s – 70’s. That kind of music is no longer popular anymore in today’s industry. Neil still sees music that way. Which is why I admire him. That’s what pisses me off about today’s industry. A lot of people would rather see Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj or Jay-Z, when everyone should concentrate on real musicians like Neil Young. While it is a bad time for Neil to still be around, he is still here ’cause music is what he does. He’s not going to give it up until he’s dead.

This is a perfect example of how I’m going to play my live shows when I get a band. Jam out. I love those long guitar jams myself, and I want to rock out like that. It’s why I admire bands like Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Phish, Hendrix, etc. The jam rock stuff. That’s how I played my acoustic shows over the years when I play out. Musicians and bands can’t help it when they play long on stage. That’s what music does to them.

I thought the Global Poverty Project in NYC was interesting stuff, and they put on a good concert too. I’m such a huge fan of Neil. I own a little over 10 of his albums in my collection and still counting. I’m trying to collect his entire discography. Neil is the fuckin’ man and a guitar genius. I’m sure people wanted a better headliner for the Global Poverty Project, but the reason they wanted Neil to headline ’cause Neil is a polio survivor, so it made sense to have him.

When I said that the “guitar god” thing is dead…

Just to clarify one thing real quick, is when I said in that one post about the guitar god thing being “dead”. I’m not disrespecting guitar gods at all. When I said that the “guitar god” thing has ended, it means there is no such thing anymore. In the old days of rock n’ roll, there was such a thing called being a “guitar god” like Hendrix, Jimmy Page,  Eddie Van Halen, Duane Allman,  Clapton, Angus Young, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. The meaning of “guitar god”, no longer exists. All we’ve been getting lately in today’s mainstream are copy cats.

If there was to be another guitar god in the future to change the face of guitar playing again, that would be difficult to do ’cause everything has already been done on the guitar. If there were to be another guitar god someday, then they must create something totally original. Which will be difficult to do. I don’t think there will ever be a guitar genius that will change the world of music again, but who knows though, maybe someday, someone will invent a new sound on the guitar.

I don’t think there will be anyone out there that will change guitar history again.

Just posted this status in Facebook about Lady Gaga today…

“You all can hate Lady Gaga all you want to, but what she’s doing with this “Body Revolution” stuff is really amazing and inspiring to me. She’s not only doing this to stick up for herself from the media and the critics, she wants to make people feel good and be proud about themselves for their bodies. She doesn’t want people to feel insecure about their appearance, no matter who you are, or what you look like. She wants to help make others feel happy.

As some of you know, I have scoliosis with the Harrington rod. I used to hate being like this but as I got older, I learned to live with it and be proud of who I am. This is part of the big reason I got into bodybuilding, so I can prove people, I can be physical and become even stronger. Yes, I’ve been bullied and made fun of ’cause of my appearance, but I’m tougher than that, I don’t let people get to me.

What she’s doing lately is reminding me of my own life, which is what’s making me speak out on this. Lady Gaga is awesome ’cause her music is positive and she wants to help people, her hit “Born This Way” is something meaningful.

If I ever get to meet her in person, I would thank her for this, big time. She just made me respect her even more. So all you Gaga haters, can piss off. What she’s doing here is wonderful. We all have insecurities. I certainly do, and you do too. We’re all not perfect. We just have to learn to live it with it, and be happy. Thank you Gaga. For this reason alone, I’ll stay loyal to her forever. As for who I am, I was definitely “Born This Way” and proud of it.”

I meant every word I said too!
Yes, she has a lot of gay/lesbian/bi fans, but she welcomes fans of all types. Listen to her lyrics for proof.
I’m a full time die hard fan of Gaga now. I’m not into pop music too much, but I do admire Gaga, Adele and Katy Perry. All 3 of those women are inspirational.

Soundgarden drops new song off of “King Animal” their new album…

The mighty Soundgarden who are one of my favorite bands, just dropped a new song on their website today. The name of the new song is titled, “Been Away For Too Long”. I liked what I heard. It’s a pretty sick song. It’s definitely not “The Superunkown” or “Down On the Upside”. The new song reminds me more of the “Louder than Love” and “Badmotorfinger” era. This is old school, Soundgarden. They are keeping their promises that they are bringing their old school sound back. Look like the band is going to stream their whole album on their website, releasing one song at a time up until release, which is Nov. 13th. The band doesn’t say that on their website, it’s just my guess on what they’re about to do. The boys still have it. Can’t wait for the new album. \m/

Enjoy the song, here.
