RIP: Ricardo Montalban 1920 – 2008

Khhaaaannnn!!! Khaaannnnn!!! Yet, another Star Trek legend dies this year. Ricardo Montalban, a mexican actor mostly famous for playing the villain Khan in one episode of the original Star Trek series titled “Space Seed” and “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” film. He is also famous for playing the main villain in the comedy series, “The Naked Gun”. He died this morning at his home in L.A., California, he was 88. At this point, no one knows the cause of death.

RIP: Ron Asheton 1948 – 2008

Legendary punk rock guitarist, Ron Asheton who played for Iggy and the Stooges, was found dead at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Asheton’s body was found in his bedroom. There was no sign of foul play or drug use in his death. He has likely been dead since New Year’s Eve. He had high blood pressure but no other medical problems. His cause of death is unknown at this time, but a toxicology report is being planned which could take about a month. Ron has been playing with Iggy and the Stooges since he formed the band with his brother Scott in 1967. Their latest TV performance was they covered Madonna’s song “Ray of Light” at the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

RIP: Eartha Kitt 1927 – 2008

Yet, another legend dies on Christmas day. First James Brown, and now Eartha Kitt. Eartha Kitt is a sultry, singer, dancer, and actress who died in Connecticut due to colon cancer. Eartha Kitt, was the last actress to play Catwoman in the Batman TV series, after Julie Newmar left the show.

RIP: Robert Mulligan 1925 – 2008

“To Kill A Mockingbird” director, Robert Mulligan, passed away of heart disease at his Connecticut home, he was 83. He also directed the “Summer of 42” and many other films. His last film before he quit directing movies was “The Man In the Moon” that starred the young Reese Witherspoon, that film is about a fourteen year old girl falling in love with an older boy.

The news of Robert Mulligan being gone was exclusively reported at the Hollywood Reporter today, so expect this news to be all over media tomorrow.  “To Kill a Mockingbird” is one amazing movie.

RIP: Majel Barrett-Roddenberry 1932 – 2008

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the widow of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, has passed away due to leukemia, she was 76. She died at her home in Bel-Air, California where she was surrounded by family and friends. She was known as “The First Lady Of Star Trek” since she was married to Gene Roddenberry.

She has done voice over work for the Star Trek computers in the original Star Trek, The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine and most of the Star Trek movies. She recently did voice over work as the Star Trek computer for J.J. Abrams new “Star Trek” movie as well.

Other than doing her voice over work for the Star Trek computer, she had an on screen acting role playing the character of, Lwaxana Troi, who is the mother of Counselor Deanna Troi, on the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” series.

RIP: Mitch Mitchell 1947 – 2008

Mitch Mitchell, an iconic drummer for the legendary band The Jimi Hendrix Experience has been found dead in a Portland, Oregon hotel room. Mitchell was found in a room at the Benson Hotel in downtown Portland a little after 3 a.m. It has been speculated that Mitchell died of natural causes but an autopsy will soon be performed on the body to see what caused his death.

Mitchell was in the middle of touring with the Experience Hendrix Tour when the band made a stop in Portland to play a show at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The Experience Hendrix Tour is a tour that Mitch Mitchell started himself which featured many different special guest musicians tributing the music of Jimi Hendrix.

Mitch Mitchell was the last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience until his passing today. Hendrix died in 1970. Noel Redding the bassist died in 2003. Mitch Mitchell was just 61.

Famous author and writer Michael Crichton has passed away in Los Angeles, he was 66. He has been battling cancer privately for quite some time now. He is the author of best selling novels such as “Jurassic Park”, “Timeline” and “The Andromeda Strain”.

Many of his novels were made into major movies which Steven Spielberg directed the first two Jurassic Park movies, they became the biggest movies of all time. Crichton’s novel “Congo” was also made into a film. Crichton’s work became a huge influence to many readers out there especially high school students. While Crichton’s books were mostly fiction, he still had a lot of reality and education in his storytelling.

Oh no, another great talent gone. 😦 Crichton was one of my favorite writers, I used to read his books all the time back in high school. RIP Michael.
