RIP Chris Cornell 1964 – 2017…

Sad and heartbreaking news. The music industry lost another music legend but this music legend was an important one. He was important to all of us.

Chris Cornell was mostly known for being the lead singer and guitarist for the Seattle metal band, Soundgarden. Everybody liked to call them a grunge band but I always looked at their music as “metal”. Soundgarden has been a huge part of all of our lives whether you were into their music or not. They were definitely a huge part of mine.

I was a young teenager during the 90’s when all this so-called “grunge” music was going on: Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, etc. All of their videos were being played all over MTV back in those days and all of their songs were being played on the radio. Soundgarden pretty much started the whole 90’s hard rock movement.

If you’re a long time Soundgarden fan then chances are, you may have seen them in concert before. Maybe you saw them once, maybe you saw them many times. I never saw them before wishing I did, though. When I was a kid during junior high back in those days, I would listen to Soundgarden albums on CD: “Badmotorfinger” and “The Superunknown” were two albums that I listened to a lot during my high school years. I was also a big fan of the Temple of the Dog album too.

I was always fascinated with Chris’s voice. He was undeniable the greatest singing voice in rock n’ roll. The man had it all vocally. He could sing really low to high pitch screams.

I followed Soundgarden’s career over the years and even followed Chris Cornell’s solo career after Soundgarden’s breakup. Then Soundgarden reunited to release the latest album, “King Animal”.

Chris Cornell was one of the biggest inspirations to me of wanting to become a musician. He was the one who helped me want to become a singer myself.

Then we have Audioslave which is another Cornell band that I followed, I have all three of their albums. For Chris Cornell solo albums, I only have three of them “Carry On”, “Euphoria Morning” and “Higher Truth”. I tried to follow all of his projects as much as I could.

I just loved listening to him sing like everyone else. He’s just one of those singers you would never get tired of hearing. Each time you hear him sing, he gives you goosebumps.

One overlooked thing about Chris Cornell is that while he’s a great singer and guitarist, he was also one of the best lyricists too. He would write unique lyrics. He had a different style of lyric writing and his lyrics was always so deep and inspiring. A lot of people don’t recognize him for his amazing style of lyric writing. When I listen to his music, I’ve always read along to his lyrics as he sings ’cause his lyrics were so amazing.

Chris Cornell was a hero of mine and an inspiration to my own music as well. Thanks Chris, you are now up there with Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone doing a duet together.

RIP: Allan Holdsworth 1946 – 2017

If you play the guitar then chances are you probably heard the name Allan Holdsworth. He was a legendary jazz & fusion guitarist. He had a unique and different style of guitar playing. Something you’ve never heard before. He was different than many other jazz artists.

When I used to subscribe to Apple Music, I listened to his entire discography of albums last year and I loved everything I’ve heard. I want to start buying his albums soon so I can own them for myself.

He was an inspiration to many guitarists who plays different genre of music. Allan Holdsworth inspired metal guitarists and he also inspired a lot of shred greats. I do know that Allan Holdsworth inspired most of the shred greats such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Al Di Meola and others. That’s how I pretty much got interested in listening to Holdsworth music ’cause those guys talked about him all the time in interviews.

Holdsworth was a genius, though and he definitely was underrated who deserved more recognition. I think he was only well-known in the guitar community. His music was great to listen to. I think my favorite Holdsworth albums that he has done were: “Sand”, “Hard Hat Area” and “None Too Soon”. The album “Secrets” is very good too. I’m gonna buy those albums from Itunes for myself pretty soon.

Allan was not really a shred guitarist… he made music that was very melodic and listenable. Check him out if you’ve never listened to him before.

RIP: Chuck Berry 1926 – 2017

chuck-berry_0

Chuck Berry was one of the reasons I picked up the guitar in the first place. If it wasn’t for him, many of us wouldn’t be doing what we all are doing… playing the guitar and playing rock n’ roll music. If it wasn’t for Chuck Berry then rock n’ roll and metal wouldn’t have happened. This is the man that started it all. Was there any other rock n’ roll guitarists before Chuck? Not that I remember.

The rock n’ roll movement in the 50’s all started because of him. Without Chuck, we wouldn’t have gotten Elvis, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Bill Haley & The Comets, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, U2, Metallica and all other rock n’ roll bands that are out today.

Chuck Berry has played music for most of his life. Before he discovered rock n’ roll, he started off playing blues music, of course, then his guitar playing evolved from there. Berry’s guitar playing style was so unique and different. Something you never heard before. When you watch him play on stage, his fretting hand would go up and down the fretboard a lot. He would play a lot of double stops and perfect fourth riffs, a lot of boogie woogie power chord riffs too.

Chuck Berry was also a showman on the stage. When he plays rock n’ roll on the stage, he knew how to rock hard. His performances were all full of energy. He would not stand in one place on the stage at all, he would move around and dance with his guitar. He wasn’t just a great guitarist and a great singer, he was also a great lyricist too… he wrote songs with a lot of humor and he wrote a lot of positive songs too.

Chuck Berry sure loved what he did musically. He was one of those musicians who loved what he did. Played music until he couldn’t do it anymore. Even during his 80 years of age, he still toured and played music on the stage. He never gave it up. One of those musicians who never believed in retiring.

Before his death, he recorded a brand new album titled “Chuck” which he dedicated the album to his wife. I wonder if he finished the whole thing before he died? He probably did. Is that why he was in a rush to release a new album ’cause he was gonna go soon? Kind of like what David Bowie did? Anyhow, I’m sure the industry will release his new album pretty soon and I’m definitely gonna buy it.

I’ve listened to Chuck’s music for years. I never bought his studio albums but I do have a greatest hits album of his. He’s definitely a huge inspiration in my own music and guitar playing. Thanks, Chuck and RIP. He maybe gone but his music will never be forgotten.

RIP: Bill Paxton 1955 – 2017

bill-paxton__140207095739

Another sad loss in Hollywood… actor Bill Paxton has just passed on. This one really sucks ’cause Bill Paxton has always been one of my favorite actors even if he played in smaller roles in certain films. In case you have forgotten who he was… he was the leading star of the hit disaster movie, “Twister” which I’m sure everyone has seen. He also had major roles in films such as “Aliens”, “True Lies”, “Titanic”, “Frailty”, “Weird Science”, “Apollo 13”, etc. He also had a small part in the first “Terminator” movie where he played the punk with the blue spiked hair, yep that was Bill Paxton saying, “Nice night for a walk, hey”? (see video below).

Bill’s latest acting project before his passing was that he was one of the leading roles for the “Training Day” TV show. According to reports, he finished season 1 before his passing.

I wonder if the Oscars tonight will mention him in the “In Memoriam” segment? They probably will. I’m sure they added him in there on the last minute. They better mention him tonight.

Bill Paxton was a great talent and he seemed like a great dude even if I’ve never met him. I don’t think he got involved in politics that much and just focused on his acting career which other actors should take note.

Bill was awesome though and “Frailty” was one of my favorite roles he’s been in. “Frailty” a horror film in which he starred in and directed himself.

Bill was 61 years old.

RIP Butch Trucks 1947 – 2017…

Sad news today that founding and longtime member of the Allman Brothers band’s drummer, Butch Trucks just passed away. Pretty bummed about this ’cause he’s definitely one of the most talented drummers in rock. He has been with the Brothers from the very start. He has been with the Brothers since the late 60’s until the band’s final shows at the Beacon Theater in 2014. Then the band broke up after; however, Butch continued to play music with Butch Trucks & Very Special Friends and another band called, Butch Trucks & The Freight Train Band. Thanks for the music, Butch and RIP.

RIP: Carrie Fisher 1956 – 2016

princess-leia-1

Princess Leia was a huge part of everyone’s childhood. She was especially a big part of mine. That character was important to me like to most people. It was Princess Leia that helped get people interested in Star Wars. Without that character and without Carrie Fisher playing her then Star Wars would have been nothing.

Yeah, Carrie may have been a very liberal woman and she may have been no fan of Donald Trump but hey… everything doesn’t always have to be about politics, right? Leave politics out of things for once. Princess Leia was an iconic character. She was somebody we all grew up watching. Princess Leia is still loved by everybody today.

She wasn’t just an actress, though, she was also an author who wrote several books over the years and I think I remember reading one of them. I think it was “Wishful Drinking”, not sure. She was a great writer. Her writing is pretty interesting. I also followed her twitter page which was also interesting. I received one of her books, “The Princess Diarist” as a Christmas gift from a friend of mine yesterday (pictured above) so I’m looking forward to reading that one too.

Carrie also appeared in many other flicks other than Star Wars for example her hilarious role in “The Blues Brothers” movie (see video below). She also had small roles and cameos in many other films as well such as “The Burbs”, “When Harry Met Sally” and many others.

There’s no chance of Carrie returning as Leia for Star Wars Episode 8 which is a bummer but I’m sure they’ll make her appear as a force ghost somehow. I’m bummed like everybody else. She was a great talent and an interesting lady. Yet, another sad loss in 2016.

RIP: George Michael 1963 – 2016

Sad news to report that legendary pop singer, George Michael has just passed away. I wasn’t a big fan of his music but I heard a lot of his songs on the radio and over MTV like most people. Whether you liked his music or not, you can’t deny that he was a hit maker. This guy wrote and sung a lot of hit songs that we’ve probably heard on the radio many times especially his Christmas hit, “Last Christmas” which was a hit song by Wham. “Last Christmas” was a hit Christmas song that everybody should know. You hear that song being played on the FM radio and hear that as background music at shopping malls around the Holiday season. George is also known for other hit songs such as “Faith” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”. He did a lot of hit songs that we all know and love. 2016 took another good one. Sucks. 😦

RIP: Greg Lake 1947 – 2016

Greg Lake was the singer and bassist for prog rock band King Crimson before becoming a full time member of prog rock band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer. I never listened to King Crimson all that much but I listened to ELP a lot. I love the ELP album, “Brian Salad Surgery”. There is only one surviving member of ELP left and that is the drummer, Carl Palmer. Greg Lake is up there with Keith Emerson now.

RIP: Gene Wilder 1933 – 2016…

Just like most people, Gene Wilder has been an important part of my life too. Everybody should have seen a Gene Wilder movie. Like most people, the original “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” has always been a huge part of my childhood. I’ve seen the original “Willy Wonka” hundreds of times. It’s a great film and one of the best children’s movies out there.

Gene has also been well-known for other roles. He has teamed up with Mel Brooks for three films which are “Young Frankenstein”, “Blazing Saddles” and “The Producers”. Gene has also worked with comedian Richard Pryor for two films in “See No Evil, Hear No Evil” and “Stir Crazy”. Gene has also directed a few films himself in which he starred in also… those films were “Haunted Honeymoon” and “The Women In Red” which are both great films too.

I have “Young Frankenstein” in my BluRay collection and thinking about watching it tonight in honor of Gene.

Gene was a genius actor for sure. I’ve watched his movies all my life. RIP Gene and thank you.

RIP: Scotty Moore 1931 – 2016

2016 just took another rock n’ roll legend. Scotty Moore who is most famous as the guitar player for Elvis Presley has just passed away. Scotty Moore was the guitar player for many of Elvis’s most famous songs such as “Hound Dog”, “Jailhouse Rock”, “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Mystery Train”, “Blue Suede Shoes” and many others. It was Scotty’s guitar playing that made Elvis so big and famous.

Like most, I was a huge fan of the Elvis and Scotty Moore stuff myself. This is a sad loss for rock music for sure. Scotty was a genius guitar player. Scotty never gave up guitar playing. He loved what he did.
