Looking forward to the Oscars tonight…

Tonight, I’ll be watching the Oscars, and after the show, I’ll post my review. I’ll be watching the red carpet opener just to see what Sacha Baron Cohen is going to do. He’s going to appear as the Dictator for sure, but you know he’s going to do something crazy for a laugh just to get the media going. It’ll be interesting.

Everyone thinks the Best Picture winner could go to “The Descendants”, but it could go to something else. Either, “Hugo” or “War Horse” could take the win too. These three films would be the most likely choices to win “Best Picture”. I would be surprised if “The Help” actually gets it but I doubt it though. “The Help” is a great movie.

I’ll be DVR’ing tonight’s “Walking Dead” episode, while I’m watching the Oscars. I’ll watch the new “Walking Dead” episode tomorrow. I watch the Oscars yearly.

Netflix Pick (DVD): The Lincoln Lawyer

I know I stopped reviewing movies from Netflix for a while. I’ve still been renting movies from Netflix and streaming them, it’s just that I haven’t been seeing anything good lately. Finally, I saw something really good, something that I actually liked.

Last night, I finally got around to watching, “The Lincoln Lawyer”. A courtroom drama movie, starring Matthew McConaughey. The film also stars Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillipe, and William H. Macy.

The story tells of a young rich playboy named Louis Roulet, (played by Ryan Phillipe) who is accused of raping and beating a prostitute. Matthew’s character, Mickey Haller, is a self defense attorney who has nothing but his car (which is a Lincoln), he has his own driver, and Mickey is also a member of a biker gang. Mickey is hired to help defend Louis in trial. Louis claims that the woman is trying to take money from him and set him up, but as new evidence starts to pile in, Mickey began to grow suspicious that Louis isn’t telling him everything.

If you’re a fan of legal drama and court room stories, you would definitely enjoy this movie. I sure did. This was a really good performance by Matthew McConaughey. I was never that big of a fan of the guy until I saw him in this movie. He just got a little more respect. His acting was really good, that makes you wish that this guy was a real life lawyer. William H. Macy wasn’t in the movie that much, pretty much a cameo appearance but his acting was really good too, as usual.

This is not an action movie even though the trailers tried to make it look like one. It’s a strictly drama film, but a real good one. It was pretty suspenseful, it kept you guessing toward the end. You’ll be hooked with the story right from the start. If you’re looking for a good film to watch on the weekend, buy this or rent it.

Oscar Predictions for this Sunday…

Oscar predictions for this Sunday, I haven’t seen most of the movies this year but these are just my guesses that will win:

Best Picture – “The Descendants” or “Hugo”
Actor in a Leading Role – George Clooney for “the Descendants”
Actress in a Leading Role – Michelle Williams for “My Week With Marilyn” or Rooney Mara for “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
Actor in a Supporting Role – Nick Nolte for “Warrior”
Actress in a Supporting Role – Octavia Spencer for “The Help”
Animated Feature Film – “Rango”
Directing: Alexander Payne for “The Descendants”
Writing (Adaptive Screenplay): “Moneyball” (because of Aaron Sorkin)
Writing (Original Screenplay): “Midnight in Paris” by Woody Allen

I remember, I once said Nick Nolte was snubbed from the Oscars, but I looked at the Nominations list again and saw him on there. I must of missed it, someone should have told me!

I hate most award shows, but the Oscars I like to watch. It’s pretty much the only award show I enjoy more than the others. Looking forward to the Oscars, Sunday night. I’ll be DVR’ing the “Walking Dead” while watching it.

Cool Video: Admiral General Aladeen himself responds to the Oscar banning…

LMAOF!!! This is why Sacha is the fucking man! Here he is in character of the The Dictator, threatening the Academy to lift the ban or there will be consequences.

Comic genius. See? The guy is  unpredictable, you just never know what he’s going to do. It’ll be interesting to see what he’s planning at the Oscars.

I’ll be posting my Oscar predictions today.

Report: Okay, Sacha Baron Cohen not banned from the Oscars, but might not be allowed to wear, “The Dictator” costume…

The Academy were quick to respond to reports and they denied banning Sacha Baron Cohen. They’re just waiting to see what he’s planning to do. He’s planning to show up in character in, “The Dictator” (pictured above), but the Academy is worried that he might do something crazy and offensive.

The Hollywood Reporter reports.

Oh please, the Academy should not be taking him so seriously. The guy’s a comedian and a pretty funny one, I must say. I am looking forward to “The Dictator” ’cause it looks like a funny ass movie. I like Sacha’s films when he’s starring in the leading role. Yes, “Borat” and “Bruno” are both good movies. Sascha is obviously politically motivated ’cause all three of these films are based on politics, in some way.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Sacha is going to do this Sunday at the Oscars. The man is unpredictable. Since they might not allow him to show up as the Dictator, what’s stopping him from showing up as Bruno or Borat? Ever think about that, eh?

I’m looking forward to the Oscars this Sunday. I’ll be DVR’ing the Walking Dead while I’m watching it. I’ll  post my Oscar predictions later tonight.

Report: Sacha Baron Cohen banned from attending the Oscars!!!!!

The Academy, just banned actor/comedian, Sacha Baron Cohen from attending the Oscars this Sunday night, even though he has a role in the film, “Hugo” (which is nominated for Best Picture). The reason? They’re just worried that he may come on the red carpet in character of the upcoming film he’s in, “The Dictator”. Plus, I’m sure they’re worried that Sacha might do something crazy & offensive on the red carpet (like mooning people or doing homosexual dancing to other men that he’s known to doing).

Deadline reports.

*sigh* I’m real tired of the Oscars giving Sacha a hard time. It just goes to show that the Academy can’t understand comedy. I know comedies have gotten Oscar nods in the past, but they would be family friendly comedies. I don’t think any slapstick or offensive comedies got anything over the years.

In reality, I don’t think he would do anything crazy or stupid ’cause he would be grown up enough to know what kind of show he is on. He attended the Golden Globes out of character many times.

He maybe controversial, yes, but this shows that he is talented at what he is doing, even if he is creating negative attention.

Report: Leonardo Dicaprio buys red slippers from “Wizard of Oz” for Academy Museum of Motion Pictures…

Love Leo Dicaprio or hate him, this makes him a really good guy for this. Leo buys, the red slippers you see in the photo above that were worn by Judy Garland in the legendary film, “The Wizard of Oz”. There were 4 slippers used, and one pair was used for the close up shot seen in the pic above. Leo wasn’t alone on spending money for the slippers, he had help with Steven Spielberg and other donors.

Of course, they wouldn’t reveal how much the slippers are worth (so they wouldn’t attract thieves). They are probably worth a fortune, so I can’t blame Leo for having other people help out. Those slippers are pretty historic and they deserve to be in a museum or some sorts.

Report: Kyle Chandler joins Kathryn Bigelow’s Bin Laden movie…

Kyle Chandler, the star of “Friday Night Lights” and the film”Super 8″, will next star in Kathryn Bigelow’s, Bin Laden movie. Kyle will not be part of Seal Team 6 in the movie, however, he will be playing a CIA agent.

Deadline, reports.

I’ve never seen “Super 8” yet, but I plan on getting around to it soon. I’ve admired Kyle’s acting since, “Friday Night Lights”. He’ll be good in this too. I hope he wins an Oscar for a film someday ’cause he certainly deserves one if he picks the right film for it.

Film Review: Chronicle

Starring: Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan

Directed by: Josh Tranx

Today, I decided to hit the mall to check out a movie and do some shopping around. I didn’t get much for shopping today. Just a couple of movies on DVD (my own copy of “The Help” and “Contagion”), a few music CD’s (the new Van Halen album and Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits), and a couple more Walking Dead books (3 & 4, I’m planning to collect them all).

When I was at the movies, I was having a hard time trying to find which movie I wanted to see. I almost wanted to see “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in 3D”, but then I thought, nah, why see it again when I already have it on DVD, and thinking the 3D won’t make the movie any better, so I said no to “Star Wars”. I also came this close to seeing the new Denzel Washington movie, “Safe House”, but then I ended up looking at the movie, “Chronicle”. The plot to “Chronicle” caught my attention so I ended up seeing this movie today.

Here’s my review.

Plot/synopsis: Three high school best friends: Andrew, Matt, and Steve go to a rave party so Andrew can meet more people. The three teenagers discover a mysterious crystalline object underground through a hole. The strange large object gave them special powers where they can move objects and fly. Andrew video tapes everything to make a documentary of things going on.

This film is another one of those low budget, “found footage” movies. Similar to the “Blair Witch Project”, “Paranormal Activity”, and many others. Most found footage movies are horror films, and finally, we get a found footage movie, that is not horror. This is a superhero movie. It is also an action movie. This movie, “Chronicle” is a completely original story. I don’t think it was adapted from any comic books, not that I know of (correct me if I’m wrong).

This is actually a pretty realistic movie. The writing was good and it made you actually believe that people could do those things. Wish I could!!! The acting was played well by the cast, as the film was full of unknown actors. No big names at all. Who ever did the writing for this movie, certainly knows their shit with the comics and is certainly a comic book geek for sure. This film will make you feel like you’re reading a comic.

There was a lot of intense action. Wow, the action scenes were a blast to watch. The effects and cinematography were pretty cool. The film was made old-school. Kind of like how they made superhero flicks in the 80’s. They didn’t over do the CGI, they used very little, I assume.

Anyway, in this film, while there are no actual superhero’s yet, this is just an introduction of what’s going to happen in the sequel. A villain is introduced in this film but I’m not going to tell you who it is to avoid spoilers. I’m sure the sequel, will have a hero with a costume and all.

I was not bored at all with this film. I enjoyed it all the way through. It was a very short movie. It had mixed emotions. It can get pretty comical as I had a few laughs at a few scenes. Some of the movie can get dark and some can get sad. This is a new “origin” superhero movie that is different than anything else.

I know people are getting tired of superhero films. You don’t even have to be a fan of superheros or comics to watch this film. I was very impressed with the film, and I’m already looking forward to the sequel. While this movie really didn’t do well in the box office (when it should have been a hit), you should really check this movie out.

Score for “Chronicle” = **** (4 stars as in “excellent”)
