Thought: “The Expendables”, the male version of “Sex and the City”???

“Sex and the City” is mostly known for women, so I guess you can say that, “The Expendables” is a movie for guys only. To be honest, “The Expendables” movie, and “Sex and the City” both seem to be similar in some way. Except for a different audience. “Sex and the City” is about women wanting to make their sex lives better while “The Expendables” is about muscle dudes wanting to fight and kick some asses.

“The Expendables” will only have a male audience, basically, a male audience of the younger generation from high school to college years. I doubt a lot of women would see, “The Expendables”. “Sex and the City” is an audience of mostly young women. Get my point? I look forward to seeing “The Expendables”, don’t get me wrong, but honestly, I’m more excited to the “A-Team” movie.

Oh and the reason I turned down, “Sex and the City 2” to wait for DVD instead was that I wasn’t in the mood to watch a comedy. I wanted to watch an action film, so I had a choice between, “Prince of Persia” or “Robin Hood”. So I obviously picked, “Robin Hood”. Although, I’ll admit that I would feel a little weird watching, “Sex and the City 2” in theater which can wait for DVD.

Film Review: Robin Hood

Starring: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Max Von Sydow, William Hurt, Mark Strong

Directed by: Ridley Scott

Today, on a day off of work, I decided to go to the mall to catch a movie. Yes, I decided to turn down, “Sex and the City 2” and wait for DVD instead, I will still see it, but not in theater. I will explain why in another blog post. Other than seeing a movie, I did buy the “Red Dead Redemption” video game for the PS3 and a few music CD’s as well. So I ended up seeing “Robin Hood” instead.

Here is my review:

Plot/Synopsis: Based upon the legendary fictional hero that robs the rich and gives to the poor, this film is just an introduction to the character. The film is taken place in the 13th century in England. King Richard was killed in a battle against the French, so it forced, Robin Hood to travel to Nottingham, which is taken over by an evil Sheriff and having trouble with taxes. That is where Robin meets Lady Marian (Blanchett) and of course, falls in love with her. While there, Robin puts together his own army with fighting skills, so he can fight against the French for freedom of his people.

Critics online have trashed this movie in a negative direction. Why? Mostly criticizing the film’s arrow shooting. Hey, does the arrow shootings in the film have to be perfect? Do they have to be like “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” the Kevin Costner version? I believe Ridley’s version of the arrow shooting was to be realistic. That’s my thought exactly when I saw the film. Critics trashed the film pretty harshly, I thought I was going to hate the film too…but I saw it ’cause I’m a fan of Ridley Scott movies. I’m not much of a Russell Crowe fan ’cause I think he’s an overrated actor. Russell has been in a few good films that I liked, films like “A Beautiful Mind”, “Gladiator”, “American Gangster”, and “3:10 to Yuma”, that’s it I believe.

Surprisingly I liked him in this movie, “Robin Hood”. A LOT. Actually, I LOVED IT. Ridley Scott did a fantastic job telling the Robin Hood story the way it was supposed to be. All the other Robin Hood films were good, the Erroll Flynn stuff, Kevin Costner, the Mel Brooks, “Men In Tights” were well done, but I think Ridley perfected the Robin Hood legacy.  If you know the Robin Hood story well, Ridley stayed true to it. As I watch this film, I actually felt like watching a UK movie ’cause that’s what it felt like. The camera work seems like it was low budget, trying to get a UK feel to it. The American actors did a good job with the English accent as well as Russell did too. In the film, Russell wore green tights of course, but he didn’t yet wear the green hat with the feather on it. Maybe they will get Russell to wear the green hat for the sequel?

The acting of all cast members was very good. The musical score was different and it felt like a Robin Hood movie with the scoring. It didn’t feel like that mainstream Robin Hood movie, “Prince of Thieves” at all. I didn’t find anything wrong with the film. It was thoroughly entertaining and I wasn’t bored even if the film was almost 2 and half hours long. Ridley and Russell did quite a few films together, but I think this was their best one. I see them two making this into a trilogy for sure. The action scenes were actually a blast and fun to watch, especially the big fight scene at the beach at the end of the movie was awesome.

If you’re a fan of the Robin Hood story, you should definitely see this!

Score for “Robin Hood” = **** (4 stars as in excellent)

Arnold is too rich to make a full time Hollywood return…

I watched Arnold’s tweetcast “Q&A” session earlier today in twitter. The popular question that everyone wants to know about Arnie is, what’s next for the Gov after his politics run is over with? Will he stick with politics? Will he return to Hollywood full time? Arnold’s answer on the tweet cast, was…well, he really didn’t quite answer the question. All he said was, “The last thing I want to do is think about what I want to do next”. Then he started rambling on about it. He didn’t say whether he would stick with politics or go back to movies, he just said he will continue to help make California a better state even if he is no longer governor.

Everyone wants Arnie to go back to leading roles in Hollywood but honestly, I don’t really care. Love him, don’t get me wrong, but he had a great career run. Most of his movies were huge money makers. He ended his leading role career with the Terminator series which is a terrific way to end your career on a high note. Why mess it up? His legacy? He should stay retired and keep doing cameos of other films like he’s been doing.

He doesn’t need Hollywood anymore. He’s too loaded and rich that he can do whatever he wants now. Maybe he will decide to return to leading roles in Hollywood someday but if he does, I don’t ever see him going back to Terminator. He’s too old to be playing that character now, don’t you think?

RIP: Dennis Hopper 1936 – 2010

Sorry for the delay. I’ve been busy this weekend. I was very sad to hear the passing of Dennis Hopper. One of the best actors of all time who sadly never won an Oscar when he should have…but at least he finally got the Hollywood Walk of Fame which is well deserved and he should have gotten it long ago. He’s a very talented actor and one of those actors that I respected. In his film career he played mostly villain type of characters, I think everyone knows that.

I think his best role that he has ever done was his role in “Blue Velvet”. I love the movie “Blue Velvet” so much. The movie is so dark and very intelligent. It’s a David Lynch film by the way. “Blue Velvet” maybe a very dark and intense film, but that’s what I love about it. It’s really good storytelling and Dennis Hopper’s acting in that movie really sent chills down my spine. If he were to win an Oscar for something, it would have been for this role in “Blue Velvet”. His acting in that film was so powerful. It is a special film and if any of you haven’t seen it, I’d suggest you check it out. I’m sure you can get it at any DVD store at $10.00 or under. I like his other movie roles, sure, “Speed”, “Easy Rider”, “True Romance”, etc. were pretty good stuff, but “Blue Velvet” is what I like the most.

Hollywood have lost another very important talent. Heath Ledger and Patrick Swayze maybe important guys, yes, but they weren’t in Dennis Hopper’s league. Dennis was a legend who wasn’t recognized by Hollywood much. It’s a shame how Dennis was taken so soon, cancer sucks. RIP, Dennis Hopper.

BREAKING NEWS: Warner Bros. announces Superman & Batman will return to the big screen in 2012!! Plus a bunch other projects announced!

Here are some shocking movie news for ya. Today Warner Bros. announced Superman will fly his way to the big screen around Christmas time in 2012, as Batman will return in July of 2012. Also announced, “Sherlock Homes 2”, WB’s is getting close to greenlighting a “Flash” movie. “Aqua Man” and “Wonder Woman” is also coming to the big screen.

The year 2011 will release “The Green Lantern” in 3D, “The Hangover 2”, the next Harry Potter film, “Red Riding Hood” and more.

The Hollywood Reporter reports:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3ifeb8cbc990332c1c8ece0b50741f3da3

Lets hope Warner Bros. makes the next “Superman” flick a real good one this time. I’m sure they will, since they got Christopher Nolan helping out with the next Supes flick. Chris definitely won’t be able to direct, “Superman” now ’cause it will be hard for him to direct two movies at the same time. It will be interesting to see who the director will be for the “Superman” movie. I personally think, the director should be no one other than the great, Richard Donner, who did the first Superman movie. If they can get Donner to direct, that would be fantastic. He’s 80 years old, but I think he’s still directing, I believe.

Top 5 Video Games that should be live action films…

In celebration of “Prince of Persia” coming out tomorrow, I thought I would name 5 video games that I think would make great live action movies.

  1. Final Fantasy – There has been a few animated “Final Fantasy” films for the big screen, but there is none yet being live action. I’m pretty sure there will be one someday.
  2. Grand Theft Auto (with Niko Bellic as it’s leading character) – They should do a Grand Theft Auto movie based on “Grand Theft Auto IV” story. As long as they don’t make it too “Fast and Furious” like, it would make an excellent action movie.
  3. Dead Space – The sci fi horror video game that tells a story of Isaac Clarke trapped in a space station with all kinds of monsters and aliens. This would be a great film and I’m sure they will turn this into a movie at some point.
  4. Assasin’s Creed – I remember youtube did a short live action movie based on the video game and it was a hit in youtube. I think it now deserve’s big screen treatment and I still have never played any of the Assasin’s Creed games yet.
  5. Metal Gear Solid – The story of Solid Snake needs to happen to the big screen. I thought “Metal Gear Sold 4 – Guns of the Patriots” was a mind blowing video game. Amazing story and amazing gameplay. Please make this into a movie soon.

Honorably mention – “Duke Nukem” – For years there have been rumours of a live action Duke Nukem movie coming out and it has always been rumoured that the Rock Dwayne Johnson was going to play the character but he denied it everytime. I think a “Duke Nukem” movie deserves to happen more than any other video game adapted film. A “Duke Nukem” action movie would be badass if made right.

I didn’t list “God Of War” ’cause Hollywood is already planning one and they are already planning a “Bioshock” movie as well.

Sex and the City, the first movie…

So last night, I watched the first “Sex and the City” movie on HBO again. I still don’t understand the hate toward this franchise. I still don’t find anything wrong with the first movie. The way I looked at the film, it was nothing all that bad. There is not much gay material in it, just very briefly with a few minor scenes. The film is simply about the 4 women reuniting again from the TV show. Of course, they do their usual talking about men and how bad they are at relationships. The film mostly focuses on trashy fashion. People hate the series because of it’s trashy fashion? That’s the point of it. It’s suppposed to be trashy and ugly. The reason for this is, that the 4 women wants to prove that the aging professional working women are not always perfect. The series want people to hate their trashy fashion.

The thing is, it’s just a movie. That’s all it is. Why are guys out there calling it a chick flick, when I’m sure men saw plenty of chick flicks in their lives at some point. “Ghost” = chick flick, “Pretty Woman” = chick flick, “Titanic” = chick flick, “Dirty Dancing” = chick flick, “Moulin Rouge” = chick flick”, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” = chick flick, “Thelma & Louise” = chick flick, “Julia & Julia” = chick flick, etc. I can go on with the list.

“Sex and the City” is not really aimed directly at women, even though the show is popular with women. For the record, the person who created the series, Michael Patrick King, happens to be a man. Yes, he is openly gay but they can still be interested in straight relationships, nothing wrong with that. The series is mostly about straight relationships.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing the sequel tomorrow. I know the sequel comes out today, but I have to see it tomorrow ’cause it’s my day off of work.

In defense of “Sex and the City”: From a man’s perspective…

This woman wrote a nice blog defending “Sex and the City”, the popular HBO TV series that was turned into theatrical films.

Check it out here:

http://www.guidetoonlineschools.com/blog/2010/05/25/in-defense-of-sex-and-the-city/

I’m not afraid to say that I am a fan of the show. Was a fan of “Sex and the City” TV series when it was aired on HBO years back. Used to watch it all the time late nights. Watched every season, pretty obsessively, I believe. I never saw the first “Sex and the City” movie in theater, but actually watched it on HBO just a couple of weeks ago actually. I did like, the first “Sex and the City” movie. It was interesting.

A lot of men would trash the show, calling it a chick flick but is it really a “chick” flick? Please be honest now. I don’t see the series being a chick flick. It’s not even close. I think people are missing the point that the show was originally made for straight men and I’m about to explain why. The show’s main plot point is 4 women who do nothing but talk about men. Why? Because they want to make their romance and sex lives better. The 4 women like to make men look terrible by talking about men all the time. We all know that women’s favorite things to do is to talk about how horrible men are. I think the point of the series is that they want straight men to watch this, to give them a wake up call about what women really think of men.

And this is the reason, I’m a fan of the series. I like to learn women’s feelings on things and how they think. The writing is really good stuff, very insightful and intelligent. Men don’t want to admit they like the series ’cause they think it’s for women only, but some men end up becoming fans of the show as well. The series is not just 4 women trying to make their love lives better. It’s also more about serious things. The series tried to wake people up on sexually transmitted disease, safe sex, and promiscuity. So that’s another reason straight males should be watching the series, so they can get a wake up call, on safe sex.

I’ve seen the trailer for “Sex and the City 2” and will probably go and check the film out. Probably sometime next week. Yeah, I’m a fan of the series. Always had been. Remember, the show is not just about 4 women talking about men, the show’s goal is to help promote safe sex. End of story.
