Suggestions on what to do if you’re struggling getting gigs in this area…

Are you a musician in a band or an acoustic solo act trying to gig and can’t figure out what to do? I can come up with a lot of suggestions! There are plenty of ways to go out and keep gigging. You just gotta set your mind to it and be creative.

Here are several quick suggestions to help you:

  • If venues reject you? Fuck ’em. Move along. – Keep going until you find the one that will care for you and your music! This is part of how I got myself out there. Trust me, I’ve had plenty of rejections. I kept asking for gigs until I found the one that liked me.
  • Set up your own shows – You don’t need to go around asking for gigs from other bands, when you can easily set up your own. I did it all the time. All you have to do is talk to the owner of the club or cafe that you’re good at setting up shows, and they’ll be interested in working with ya. I’ve had experience setting up my own shows, lots of times.
  • Set up your own music festival – I see bands do this all the time. A lot of them set up their own music festivals ’cause it was the only way for them to play out and get recognized for it. It may cost a lot of money but it’s worth it, if you want to gig out.
  • Play house concerts or house parties – This always works. It may not be at an actual venue at a bar or a club, but a live performance at a home is still a gig! Bands put on house concerts all the time. People love this stuff. It’s great for the die hards who follow your music. Live music doesn’t always have to be at a club or a small theater. Live music can be anywhere! Remember that!
  • Put on live internet streaming performances – With the use of technology today, why not have a live internet gig? People watching live on the internet is still an audience, in my opinion. It may not be in person but it’s still a live show. In 2013, I’m planning on doing something like this, so stay tuned.
  • Take your music out on the road! – You don’t need to be stuck here, playing music in Albany! Go on tour under your own budget. I can understand why more bands and artists around here are starting to tour ’cause there ain’t shit for places to play around here.

There are always different ways to share your music for your live audience and your fans. Just gotta use your brain a little bit.

Is it really getting harder for bands & musicians to book gigs? Seems like it…

I’m seeing discussions in facebook lately of musicians complaining about how this music scene is lacking. It’s getting tougher for bands & acoustic solo artists to book everywhere, nowadays. I’m seeing that a lot of musicians around here are admitting that they’ve been getting rejected by a lot of venues. A lot of musicians just get gigs around here from other musicians, just word of mouth, when a band needs an opener, musicians will ask to get on those gigs. They would either ask other bands to get on gigs, or the bands will ask them. Either way. Venues don’t reach out to bands to ask them to play on a gig. Don’t usually work that way anymore.

The only time when a venue wants to book a band and flat out ask them, is when a band has a large following. Those are the bands that seem to be getting all the gigs, these days. Even the popular and more successful bands struggle to get gigs too.

Even if I try to get myself back out there, if I want to gig again, I’m probably going to have a tough time getting on a gig too.

Several years ago, when I was gigging out like crazy, I had no problem getting gigs from venues. I’ve asked plenty of venues for a gig and they actually accepted me. Venues such as Cafe Lena’s for Wednesday night “Emerging the Artist Breakout Series”, King’s Tavern, Backstreet Billiards, the Coffee Planet, Slow Jed’s, etc. As far as Valentine’s goes, I didn’t ask the venue to do their evening “Happy Hours”, there was a musician already doing those shows who I befriended with and I asked him to help him out booking the shows, so I can play there myself.

There are so many bands and artists in the Capital District trying to get gigs, but none of them get much around here anymore.

If you’re struggling, there are still ways to get gigs. Like I said before, try asking to be the opener of their show. Tell the venue that you’re willing to play for free, or if you want, you can even set up a home gig and have a small audience at home, that always works too. There’s always ways to play out. You can even do a live internet streaming show, which I plan on doing when I think of a plan.

Musicians struggling to get gigs around here, it’s just further proof that there is no music scene here. Everyone’s always accusing me of not doing much in music. This could be part of why I don’t do much ’cause there’s no place to play out anymore. So what’s the point of going back out, anyway, ya know? I’ll be lucky enough to even get a 1 gig or two in 2013, even if I tried hard to get a lot.

I understand musicians want to play live a lot ’cause that’s what we do this for. Perform in front of an audience, and believe me, I love performing too. It’s just sad that musicians get forced to get stuck doing nothing ’cause a lot of places don’t have live music anymore. Venues are closing down, bars/cafe’s stopped having live music, venues are getting even more strict with their booking policies, etc. Soon, everything will be “pay to play” gigs, because of the economics.

I may not like the bar & club scene, but I do play them anyway ’cause I just want to perform in front of people.

Performing live is awesome. I too wish we could have a better scene. It’s just proves that bars, clubs, cafes, etc. don’t care about you or your music, they just want a large draw. If you don’t have a large draw, no show. It’s pathetic the way these so called, “venues”, handle the booking but it is what it is. All they care about is the money. It would be nice if this scene was more music appreciative and positive, which is far from it.

Report: Missing FBI files released, but Marilyn Monroe’s death, still remains a mystery…

FBI files of Marilyn Monroe were released, in which, shows that she may have had a communist past. They also show that the FBI were aware about the theories that she has been killed, but they do not contain any new information about her death 50 years ago.

Oh man, this is really starting to show the government might have had something to do with her death. Yes, I’m still calling on it, that she was murdered by the Kennedy’s, and they covered it up. Got away with it.

Some of you may ask, how? Well, it’s easy to make a murder look like a suicide. That’s what they did here. I’ve read, the book, “The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe”, a long while back. It was described that her body was found in her bedroom, with the phone left off the hook. She had bruises all over her body. Before her death, Bobby Kennedy was spotted at her home with other men. So they may have beaten her and forced her to take the drugs.

Her death maybe probable suicide, but I think she was murdered.

It doesn’t matter how long ago it was, we need to know how she really died. It’s going to be even more difficult to get answers ’cause most of the Kennedy family are dead. It’s a shame what happened to her. I love Marilyn. Watched most of her entire filmography and I feel good about it. I understand why she’s so famous and legendary now.

Film Review: “Django Unchained”…

Starring: Jamie Foxx, Leonardo Dicaprio, Christoph Waltz, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson
Directed by: Quentin Tarantino

Today, I finally saw, Tarantino’s newest film, “Django Unchained” and here is my review.

Plot/synopsis: Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), a former Dentist, buys the freedom of slave, Django. Then he trains him to become a deputy bounty hunter, so Django can go rescue his kidnapped wife who is being held by a ruthless plantation owner, Calvin Candie (Leonardo Dicaprio).

As you can see, the plot, is simple, and straight forward. Tarantino has been wanting to make a Western film for years and he finally got around to making that opportunity to do one. Just like with “Inglorious Basterds”, Tarantino re-writes history again. A re-telling of history in his own take. This film takes place two years before the Civil War, happens. Of course, this film is going to spark controversy in the news, with the constant use of the “n” word, in which Spike Lee wrongly and unfairly criticized. In Tarantino’s mind, back in those days, the “n” word wasn’t really considered a racist term back then. Spike maybe offended by the use of the “n” word in the film but apparently all the black actors in the film, including Jamie Foxx, seems to have no problem with it.

On with the film, I was very entertained throughout. It was at least 3 hours like most Tarantino flicks, but I wasn’t bored one bit. Tarantino has always been great at the pacing. His movies may seem long, but once you see it, the film won’t feel like it’s 3 hours.

All the characters were very enjoyable. Jamie Foxx as Django was badass, and Leo Dicaprio made a badass villian. Christoph Waltz delivered a great performance like always. There were a few surprising cameo appearances in the film, though. Don Johnson made a cameo. Jonah Hill made a cameo, and even though his role was small, he did a good job. Of course, Tarantino himself has a cameo. What I admired the most, was Kerry Washington, playing Django’s wife. She didn’t have any dialogue in the film. The camera just pointed at her a lot. I don’t think the script had any lines for her or anything. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Not only this film was a spaghetti Western, it also seemed like it was a comedy, ’cause there were hilarious scenes throughout. Tarantino seems to know his shit with Westerns ’cause the film was made like it was a real Western. If you want a modern day Clint Eastwood, spaghetti Western, for example, “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”, this film is it. The film locations were Old West like, and all the costumes were Old West like too.

With all this being said, this is one of the best films of this year. It’ll probably make that list somewhere, definitely pretty high up there. It is also Tarantino’s best film and it’s definitely BEST PICTURE worthy for the Oscars. I really hope this film makes “BEST PICTURE”. It probably won’t ’cause the Academy has never been friendly with violent movies too much. “Django Unchained” was an amazing movie. I wasn’t bored. Whether you’re a fan of Tarantino films or Westerns, you would love this film. Tarantino did it again. He never disappoints. Do yourself a favor and see this flick!

Score for, “Django Unchained” = **** (4 stars as in “excellent”)

I’m actually looking forward to the upcoming Lady Gaga, documentary… we all deserve to know who she really is…

Ever since Lady Gaga, went commercial and mainstream for her first three albums, we all didn’t know much about her. Everyone wants to call her an attention whore with her crazy fashion and all that stuff, but maybe this film will help make people understand her a little better. Why she does what she does. How she became what she is now. The film looks like it will give us insight on who this woman is. I think her story deserves to be told and glad a documentary is happening. She is a positive woman who wants to help the world. She’s not just about herself. She wants to make a difference with her music. Yes, I am a fan and admire the things she does. She’s the real deal. I’m not sure if this film will get a nation wide theater release, but I’m sure we’ll learn more as we go along. It probably will get a nation wide release.

More on the story, here.

Cool Video: Heart performs “Stairway” at Kennedy Center honors…

There was live music at the Kennedy Center Honors but Led Zep didn’t perform, of course. Instead, they had other artists perform for them. Here is Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, performing “Stairway”, with an unknown band and Jason Bonham on the drums. It was a killer performance, but my only negative was the choir. You see, I’m  not knocking the choir, I  think they did great but the choir wasn’t needed. I think it was just there for show. “Stairway” doesn’t really need a church choir backing the song up. Ann could have sang the song fine without them. I’m not saying the choir sucked, it just wasn’t needed, that’s all. I mean, a lot of people mistakenly wants to believe that “Stairway” is a religious song, but I never thought it was a religious song and I don’t think that was Robert’s intention when he wrote the lyrics.

A lot of people are talking about Robert’s emotions when he’s watching the performance, trying to fight back tears. Um, I don’t think Robert’s the only emotional one here. All three of those guys: Jonesy, Robert, and Jimmy looked like they were about to cry. Even Jason too.

Other than that, this was a phenomenal performance. If  they got rid of the choir, the performance would have been even better.

I also loved the look on Jimmy’s face when that guy in the band started playing the guitar solo. The look on Jimmy’s face is priceless. Jimmy is probably saying to himself, “This guy is better than me, damn!”

Enjoy!

Led Zeppelin’s “Celebration Day” movie…

So I watched Led Zeppelin’s “Celebration Day” this afternoon. Yes, the guys in Led Zeppelin maybe getting old. They may have tuned most of their well known songs down so they can fit Robert’s voice. Robert may not be a screamer anymore like he used to be. No matter your opinion on the band, they still killed it that night in 2007 at the 02. I just sat there watching the concert, being totally mesmerized of 4 guys just rockin’ out on stage and enjoying themselves.

Remember what I said, when their 2007, 02 concert, was full of hits and not enough obscure, Zeppelin songs? I was absolutely wrong! The concert was full of obscure Zeppelin songs that were either never played before live or wasn’t played much. Songs like, “For Your Life”, was a song never played live before. That song off their album “Presence”. Their song, “Ramble On” was played live a few times but never in full. This show they did play, “Ramble On” in full which hasn’t been done before. They also played, “Trampled Under Foot”, and “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”, which those songs weren’t played too much over the years in their career. The rest of their set list were their greatest hits.

As I was watching the movie, I felt like I was really watching Led Zeppelin performing on stage. I felt like I was really there, wishing I was.

Their set list is still missing many of their famous and most important songs, though. They should have threw, “Heart Breaker” in there somewhere. I also wished they played, “Achille’s Last Stand”, “Immigrant Song”, “The Rover”, “Communication Breakdown”, “Dyer Maker”, “The Rain Song”, “Gallows Pole”, “Friends”, “Out On the Tiles”, “How Many More Times”, etc.

I can understand why the tour rumors kept going because at the 2007 show, the fans wanted to hear the greatest songs that weren’t played that night. The fans wanted the band to continue on, so they can get a chance to play all of their songs live and vary up their set lists. Will Led Zeppelin ever get back together again? The band may keep denying it. The fans may doubt them, but I still say, “Never say never”. I mean, christ. The Who, is still playing without Keith Moon. So why not? I still find it a possibility that Led Zep could get back together again. Maybe not this soon, but sometime down the road.

It pisses me off that people would want to criticize legendary bands on “aging”. You see. Age doesn’t make a difference in music. As long as you have the talent and the skill, who cares about the fuckin’ age, ya know? Age is just a number. That’s all it is. Musician’s don’t give up music. They’re all going to keep playing music until they’re dead, that’s all there is to it.

Back to the “Celebration Day” Blu Ray, it was a good concert movie. My only disappointment that there were no extras. No behind the scenes footage or no backstage footage or any of that stuff. It is a must own for any Led Zep fan, though. It is worth getting. Do yourself a favor and check it out. They are still rock n’ roll genius’s.

Netflix Pick (streaming): Red Dawn (original)

Due to the upcoming, “Red Dawn”, remake in 2013, Netflix has decided to make the original 1984 film streamable for a while until, Jan. 1st. This is Netflix’s way of helping to hype the remake and they want people the chance to see the original before the remake comes out in theaters. I never saw the original film. I did end up watching a movie on Netflix last nighit, Christmas Day, and this is what I ended up watching. The original, “Red Dawn”.

I was very surprised by the movie, and in my opinion, it is one of the greatest war movies ever made. Yes, it is a war movie, as it is about a fictional World War III, just beginning. The film tells the story of Calumet, Colorado which is a small town who lives their life like we all do, and all of a sudden their town was taken over by Russian Airborne troops. A group of young boys, escape from the attack by hiding out in the woods, so they can survive. After killing Russian soldiers out in the woods, that was when they decided they were going to fight back at the Russians. So they trained themselves to fight and armed themselves with guns, and they called themselves, the “Wolverines”, named after their high school mascot.

The film is getting mixed reviews. You either love it or hate it, but in my opinion, I thought the original movie blew me away. Yes, it was kind of cheesy and silly in some parts, but there were some pretty powerful scenes in the original. Not sure if the remake will be able to do those scenes better. There were a few pretty emotional and sad scenes. So if you watch this movie, make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.

The original is full of stars back when they were young like Patrick Swayze who plays the lead, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson,  Jennifer Grey, etc. I thought the acting was decent. Of course, I’m sure the entire cast were totally unknown actors at the time of the films release, though.

I hope the upcoming remake won’t suck. Yes, of course, the remake will probably change the story around, and make things different a little bit, but I hope they don’t leave too much out. I’ll probably check out the remake when it comes out in theaters, sure. Seeing the original almost makes me want to check it out. The remake could potentially be a good film, if they do it right.

If you haven’t seen the original film before, you better check it out on Netflix soon before they take it off on Jan 1. I thought the original was pretty intense and might end up watching it again. I’m probably gonna get the original on Blu Ray. I’m sure it will cost like $10 – $15 at Best Buy. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It was an awesome flick!

Do I really care if my music is really successful or not? HELL NO!

A lot of bands and musicians really take themselves seriously. I never did. While I would like my music to become huge & successful, I don’t really care to get there or not. Why, you may ask? The answer is simple. I just play for the love of music. Whether I get lots of fans, just a few fans, or hell, even if no one listens to my music at all. I’m good. A lot of bands & music artists out there are pretty desperate to get recognized and get noticed. Again, that stuff is great, don’t get me wrong, but it shouldn’t matter. One thing I’m not gonna do and never did, is go out there and pretend that I’m so popular and act like I’m so great like too many seem to be doing these days. I won’t be afraid to admit that I suck and not many listen to my music.

That’s the way to be ya know? I don’t have delusions of grandeur like some mistakenly want to think of me as. It’s good to be real with yourself. There are too many musicians out there that don’t want to admit that they suck, it’s all crazy. I mean, why won’t you? If you admit that you suck as a musician, people are not gonna care, anyway. If you don’t admit that you suck, it just proves my point that a lot of musicians have a huge ego around here.

I would like to have the same success and popularity other bands are getting. Performing on bigger stages, opening for national acts, etc. I just don’t care if I get there or not. Other than that, I’m just a happy guy. Enjoy life at home. Playing my guitar and writing songs. That’s all that matters to me.

If so many people did care about my music, I probably would be doing this more. It is probably why I haven’t done a lot lately. I do plan on getting back into the music thing, though. Hopefully, in 2013. I just got to write new songs whenever I get to it and learn some new covers to play out there. I still like to gig sometimes ’cause it’s what I love to do, whether a crowd shows up or not.

I never saw myself as a local celebrity or a superstar. Other bands & musicians, want to see themselves that way. It’s crazy.

One way to earn more respect as a musician, is don’t take yourself too serious. Just play, and enjoy. That is it.

Why Blu Ray movies are the best thing ever!!!

My Blu Ray movie collection is slowly starting to build up. I’ve been really getting into Blu Ray now instead of DVD. Some may say, Blu Ray is just a waste of money, if you want the movie, just get the DVD, but if you think about it, Blu Ray isn’t a waste of money. There is a big difference between Blu Ray and DVD. Blu Ray obviously has way better picture and sound quality. The picture and sound quality on Blu Ray is so impressive, that is what makes them addicting. So far, I have about 20 titles on Blu Ray. As a matter of fact, I find watching movies on Blu Ray much better than watching movies in a public theater. The sound is louder on Blu and the picture quality is crystal clear. This is why I’m starting to buy movies on Blu Ray from now on, instead of DVD.

I’m not going to replace my entire DVD collection to Blu Ray ’cause that would be a lot of money and a lot of work. I’m only buying my favorite movies on Blu. Just the movies that I’ve seen and the ones that I love. Blu Ray prices are slowly starting to go down in stores, which is another reason why I’m starting to collect them more. Blu Ray is cool.
