Brock’s 5 Films a Week #4

Yep, I know I’m a little late on “5 Films a Week”  for this week but I’ll make my choices of reccomendations for Blu Ray/DVD rentals or buying if you go out shopping for movies on the weekends like a lot of people do.

Here are 5 films for this week for you to pick up at your local video stores:

1. Taken

(Liam Neeson’s excellent and breathtaking action/thriller, “Taken” is finally out on DVD. A film about a government agent out to celebrate his daughter’s birthday, when she announced she is going to France to follow her favorite band U2 in their European tour, yet she is kidnapped and she’s been sold to a brothel by mob hitmen. Liam’s character goes out on a rampage to kill everyone responsible for taking her and finds her safe himself…)

2. Serenity

(I blind bought this film on DVD, I never saw it before and it’s a great action/adventure sci fi movie. It sounds awesome on the 5.1 Surround system. A fun movie with a fun story. Not one of the best sci-fi movies that everyone claimed but it is enjoyable. Check it out.)

3. Zack and Miri Make a Porno

(Kevin Smith’s film about a couple of friends sharing an apartment together, they have no choice but to make a home made porn in order to afford their rent of their apartment. This film will seriously give you the LOL’s. I’m not much of a Kevin Smith fan but I really loved this film. Hilarious all the way through…it doesn’t show the hot Elizabeth Banks naked in this movie although there is plentyof nudity in this film.)

4. The Nature Boy Ric Flair – The Defnitive Collection

(I’ve seen a lot of documentary DVD’s of various wrestlers from Hulk Hogan to Shawn Michaels to Vince McMahon to Mick Foley, etc. I think the Ric Flair Collection is the best wrestling DVD I’ve ever seen. Great documentary, very well put together and picked a lot of great matches Ric Flair had in his career. Check it out for you wrestling fans, this is a must have…)

5. The Terminator Trilogy box set

(In celebration of “Terminator Salvation” coming out this week, I would suggest you see all 3 Terminator films before seeing the new one, that way you can follow the story. You must watch the films in order so you can understand the story. I don’t need this box set since I own all 3 Terminator films separately anyways. I fucking love all 3 Terminator films, even the 3rd one that everyone hates! I honestly feel the 3rd Terminator is way more action packed than “Judgement Day”.)

Green Day is not a talented band as everybody thinks they are…

I don’t understand why this band is so popular. To be honest, I am pretty much losing interest in this band and no longer caring for them. I saw them perform some of their new songs off “21st Century Breakdown” their new album on Saturday Night Live last night, and haven’t been digging their new shit.

I used to think “American Idiot” was a really good album and the best they’ve ever done, but I don’t like the record anymore for some reason.

I think there is way too much simplicity in Billie Joe’s songwriting. The only thing the guy knows how to play on the guitar is power chords. That’s how all Green Day’s songs are played are nothing but power chords and everybody can pretty much figure out all Green Day songs by ear easily. Billie Joe is not a profesionally trained vocalist, he sings like a 5 year old kid.

Most of their music is not that great anymore with the exception of “Dookie” which is a decent record and probably the only Green Day album worth listening to.

Those music listeners who are not musicians wouldn’t understand how simple Green Day’s songs are. Anybody could write those power chord songs. Green Day is no longer exciting as they once were.

It’s amazing to me how people think punk music is still alive when that genre died when Joe Strummer of the Clash left us. The Ramones, The Clash, Iggy and the Stooges, and the Sex Pistols. Those bands are the true pioneers of punk rock. Green Day are just a couple of punk rock wannabes. I am no longer a Green Day fan, so I won’t pick up their new album.

Thought: “The Expendables” will be the most controversial film in cinema history, I promise you that…

To those out there that think Stallone’s next movie, “The Expendables” will bomb and fail in the box office, if you use a little common sense, it’s not. I honestly do think “Expendables” will be the “Dark Knight” of 2010. There is already quite a lot of controversial material in the film.

Lets face it:

  • An action movie full of tough guy action stars (which has never been done before in history of cinema)
  • Some of the film is taken place in Rio De Janiero in Brazil. Think the media can take violence in a peaceful city?
  • Some of the film is taken place in New Orleans where Hurricane Katrina hit. The media will be all over this when the movie hits theaters. They will blame Stallone for turning New Orleans into a negative direction after a disasterous weather hit that city a while back
  • Some of the dark imagery in the film will grab media’s attention: The bikes, the Expendables tattoos, the strong violence, etc.
  • The Arnold, Sly, and Church (who ever the actor is) scene will indeed be huge media attention for months and months, I’m sure this scene will be talked about for a long time.
  • WWE, UFC, and MMA fighters being part of the film will grab the media’s attention, especially the sports entertainment news.
  • Sly doing his own stunts at 62 years old.

I can think of plenty more reasons the film will be a major success. The Expendables won’t top “Titanic” in world box office but will do just as good as “The Dark Knight”.

The Expendables will be right up there along with “The Dark Knight”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Fight Club”.

It’s Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” that I think is going to fail in the box office. It’s a good thing Sly didn’t join Tarantino’s WWII flick that he was long rumoured for.

So those who think “The Expendables” is going to bomb, maybe entitled to your own opinion, but I think you’re delusional if you think that. There is no way this film will bomb.

Brock has finally started to write songs again…

I’ve been writing riffs again and jotting down some lyric ideas, so hopefully I’ll finally have some new tunes to get a new studio demo album done.

I know, it’s been a while since I’ve written some new music. Been on a bit of a writers block lately but inspiration is starting to hit me again.

I may make the next demo CD a full band thing ’cause these songs I’ve been hearing in my head were meant to be played in a band. I won’t do the full band thing for live shows, but just a studio project only, maybe.

I refuse to perform live in the area, but I’ll still do studio recordings and still make new music all the time. I don’t know if the studio band project will happen right away ’cause I need to write some good rockin’ stuff for it to happen.

I love playing music and playing guitar, I’ll always be doing that. That’s pretty much my main passion than anything else.

Brock watches Farrah Fawcett documentary on NBC last night…

Yep, I watched “Farrah’s Story” last night on NBC and thought it was the most saddest thing I ever seen in a long time. Farrah, the former “Charlie’s Angels” TV star, is dying of cancer.

The ending was really heartbreaking, when Ryan O’ Neal brought his jailed son in handcuffs Redmond O’ Neal to visit his dying mom. Yes, the police gave Redmond permission to get out of jail for a little while so he can go visit his mom. That one scene in the documentary was really sad. That documentary last night was all real stuff, I don’t think it was scripted so it can create drama TV. Farrah is really dying of cancer and it’s sad that she’s going to be gone soon.

Prayers go out to Farrah and her family.

Thought: I don’t think Church is Bruce Willis, here’s why…

News going around the web that Church, a character from Stallone’s “Expendables” with an un-announced actor that is about to be signed. Honestly, I don’t think it’s Bruce Willis anymore. Why? Because simply put, I believe he’s still working on the sci-fi action adventure the “Surrogates”. Filming is all done with the “Surrogates” but the man will be too busy doing the promotion/marketing of the film. So don’t count on Bruce Willis being in the “Expendables”. I agree though that it would be fucking badass to see the Planet Hollywood dream team all on the same film: Arnold, Bruce and Sly.

I believe the next possible choice is John Travolta. Sly and John has been buddies for years and it’s possible they can reunite for another film as well. Travolta has not yet returned to work in Hollywood since the tragic death of his son but still Travolta could agree to do a small scene in Stallone’s movie as the Church character. Sly could surprise the hell out of us with Travolta coming back. Yes, Travolta has got three new movies coming out, “The Taking of Pelham 123”, “Old Dogs” and, “From Paris With Love”, but Travolta already filmed those 3 films before his son’s death.

Either that, or don’t count on any big name star to be Church. Sly has always been known to get unknown actors, people we’ve never heard of before, he could do the same with the Church character. Church could be a big name actor or an unknown, either way.

I think Church could be a big name star possibly, you’ll never know who it is. Sheryl Main’s twitter page is keeping it a secret and teasing us…she won’t reveal who Church is until she gets the “ok” from Sly himself, so it’s pretty obvious it’s a big name star, indeed.

Report: John Woo’s “Red Cliff” to be released in U.S.A. theaters in the Fall…

This was bound to happen sometime. John Woo’s Chinese epic two part film, “Red Cliff” will be getting a theaterical release in the U.S. sometime in the fall. While the Chinese version was split into two different parts, the U.S. version will be one whole film. The U.S. version will be 150 minutes long which means they will have to edit a lot of scenes out.

Great news. I’ve been wanting to see this, it sounds like an interesting film. It’ll probably be only playing in selected theatres in the U.S. not nationwide, so hopefully I’ll get to see this. The film looks very interesting…
