To those that believe powerlifters are all fat or powerlifting will make you fat… watch this video…

There’s a huge myth going on out there that powerlifters are nothing but fat asses or powerlifting will make you fat. If you really believe that claim then tell that to guys like Ed Coan, Dan Green and Mark Bell. Those three guys I just named are the greatest powerlifters of all time. If you look at their bodies, you’ll see they have really jacked physiques. A lot of male powerlifters out there have more impressive physiques than bodybuilders.

There are many that seems to want to put down the powerlifting industry and try to make the sport look bad and I don’t know why. When I went to two powerlifting meets myself, I’ve seen some guys with monster physiques. They maybe big but they aren’t fat. It’s just that doing a lot of heavy lifting over the years will put on some gains.

This is a huge part of why I got into powerlifting hoping to get a huge muscular physique. That’s what I want… get a really huge body, gain weight without getting fat.

I do want to become a full time powerlifter and become more seasoned. I hope to become one of the greats someday and maybe get lucky enough to get recognized for it. I’ve done two powerlifting meets so far and I won some respect at both of them so I feel I’m already am doing pretty good.

I don’t like how some out there wants to have negative feelings about powerlifting. I think it’s a great sport and it’s an amazing experience to get into. I think it’s amazing to find out what your personal records are for bench, squat and deadlift and to find out the heaviest number you can lift. It’s fun and exciting to find out how strong you actually are when you haven’t realized it after all these years. It’s fun to get stronger and stronger and impress your friends & families. It’s fun to win respect with people with your lifting.

Powerlifting is a great thing to get into and I’m glad I finally got into it. I wish I got into powerlifting a long time ago.

In weightlifting, you’ll continue to get doubters, worriers and criticizers… just ignore them and just do your thing…

It’s interesting how people react when you get into weightlifting whether in bodybuilding or powerlifting or whatever. When you get into weightlifting full time,  you’ll get a lot of people doubting you. You’ll also get a lot of people worrying about you and get a lot of people criticizing you. Another thing, when you’re a full time weightlifter… you’ll also get all kinds of people who don’t even lift giving you unsolicited advice about weightlifting. Crazy how all this is but you’re going to get all this.

When it comes to people doubting me, I’ve been told I’ll never reach my dreams by getting fit and muscular which I am, thank you. I seem to be doing okay. When it comes to people worrying about me, I’ve been told I shouldn’t do too much and have been told that I shouldn’t be lifting heavy weights or I’ll hurt myself, blah blah blah blah. When it comes to people criticizing me, I’ve had people criticizing my form, criticizing the way I eat clean most of the time and I can go on and on.

You’ll get all kinds of weird people coming after ya in the fitness and bodybuilding world for sure. The trick is you just got to ignore everyone’s bullshit and continue to do your thing. That’s the best you can do, ya know? A lot of people want to doubt you, worry about you and criticize you, but you want to prove everyone wrong that you can do this. That’s what it’s all about, in my opinion. Proving everyone wrong.

I get all kinds of unsolicited advice from people who don’t even workout or lift weights which to me is kind of funny. You’ll get all that too.

Once again, just ignore everyone and do your thing. That’s what I do and it’s a healthy attitude to have. Do things your way and your way only. It’s okay to take fitness advice from experience lifters sometimes but even some of them don’t give you good advice. I’ve been doing bodybuilding and weightlifting for 10 – 15 years, somewhere around that and I’m doing real good. I get a lot of people telling me I shouldn’t lift heavy but I do anyways. I can understand that people get worried and scared a little bit ’cause of my scoliosis and all but I’m fine and all good. I haven’t gotten any serious injuries and haven’t gotten put in the hospital yet.

I’m doing pretty well in weightlifting and I’m in great shape. I’ve been lifting for a long time now and I continue to get doubters, worriers and critics even to this day. Crazy, I tell ya. It’s interesting how society treat bodybuilding nowadays. I’m going to keep doing what I do no matter what anyone says. I love weightlifting and hitting the gym. I’ve been going to the gym 4 days a week on a full time basis for a long while now and it’s going really good. Stuck with the 4 day a week routine throughout the Spring/Summer… and now I’ve been sticking with it throughout the Fall too. I’m going to stick with the 4 day a week routine throughout the Winter too. I workout all year round.

I do take a week off of bodybuilding and weightlifting once in a blue moon, though. It’s okay to take a week break just don’t over do it. Taking a week break from weightlifting like a couple of times a year would be alright. I’ll probably take a week break from weightlifting on Christmas week in December like I do every year.

When you get into fitness and weightlifting, you’ll get a lot of people saying stuff about you. Once again, just ignore their shit and just do your thing. I truly believe that the reason gym goers get a lot of doubters, worriers and critics is ’cause people will get jealous of them. I can’t see no other reason really ’cause people will get jealous of you. Why would people get jealous of you? It’s because they don’t do much with themselves and they know you’re doing well with your weightlifting goals… that’s why they doubt you and criticize you. They do it in a jealous rage really. They want to be doing what you’re doing and if you got a great bodybuilding physique, be ready for jealous people to come after ya.

Keep doing your thing, don’t listen to people and keep reaching your dreams & goals. Prove everyone wrong that you can do this. The bodybuilding and fitness world is gonna be crazy, no doubt but you have to ignore everyone and don’t give up no matter what people say ’cause that’s what they want you to do. They don’t want you to be successful in weightlifting ’cause they don’t like how they aren’t in great shape.

I love weightlifting. It’s a second passion of mine and I’ll never give it up. I’ll never give up weightlifting until I can’t physically do it anymore, I don’t care how old I get.

Watch me deadlift 280 lbs…, my p.r.’s are rapidly going up!

At the last powerlifting meet I did, I was able to deadlift 265 easily. It was a piece of cake! That means I could probably do 270 and 275 easily as well. I was thinking about doing 270 or 275 but then I thought to myself, “Why don’t I try to challenge myself and attempt a big 280 lbs?”. Well, I did exactly that and the lift was successful. So 280 lbs. is my latest personal record on the deadlift. I’m quickly on my way up to the big 300!!!

My goal before the next powerlifting meet at Albany Strength (which won’t be for a while) is to be able to deadlift over 300, be able to bench over 200 and squat over 200. I’m working my way up to my goals, just taking my time and not rushing.

Getting into powerlifting is so strange to me but I’m loving it, though! I was never meant to become a powerlifting or competitor of any kind. I just wanted to build muscle and become the best shape of my life. How did I get into powerlifting? Well, I have friends that are into powerlifting and they do powerlifting meets all the time. They talked me into going to one and entering one… I couldn’t say “no” so I gave powerlifting my first try. Powerlifting is an awesome sport. I’m going to stick with it for a long time, I think. You can only live once, ya know? I just want to do something big in my life and be able to do an athletic sport on a pro level.

Kev

Busting powerlifting myths I hear out there…

So far, I have done only two powerlifting meets and both of them were great!!! As I keep doing research on powerlifting competitions, there are going to be some who will criticize the sport and make all kinds of misconceptions about it. I’m going to name those misconceptions people have been saying about the sport and I’m going to debunk ’em too…

Here we go:

  • Only fat asses do powerlifting: I’m sure you hear this one a lot. Yeah, a lot of out of shape people do powerlifting, no doubt but not all of them. When I went to those two powerlifting meets, I’ve seen people of all different types and different sizes. I’ve seen skinny people to really muscular people. Yeah, there are plenty of guys and girls who are in fantastic shape that do powerlifting. A lot of people want to believe that only fat asses do powerlifting but don’t believe them ’cause they’re full of shit.
  • Lifting heavy weights all the time won’t build you muscle: Another one that’s bullshit. I’ve been lifting heavy weights all the time now and I’ve gotten some impressive gains ’cause of it. Lifting heavy weights for powerlifting is no different than lifting heavyweights for bodybuilding. Powerlifting will definitely get you bigger and stronger quicker. I got into powerlifting hoping to get stronger and get more gains.
  • Powerlifting is dangerous and will give you many injuries: Powerlifting may seem pretty scary at first but once you try it, you’ll find that it’s actually very easy and safe. Yes you can get injuries in powerlifting just like you can get injured in regular bodybuilding in the gym. Bodybuilding in the gym can be just as dangerous only if you do bad form and bad technique. In powerlifting, it’s the same thing. Lift weights in good form and learn good technique you’ll never get injured at all. Powerlifting meets are actually very safe ’cause there are professional spotters all over the place and if they see you get in trouble with a lift, they’ll get you out of it immediately so you won’t get hurt.
  • Powerlifting is a guy’s sport: Not really. Where did this one come from? When I experienced two powerlifting meets, there were all kinds of women doing them. Powerlifting is very popular with women. There’s a lot of women out there that love to lift really heavy weights just like the men do. It’s crazy.
  • I’m not strong enough to do powerlifting: You’ll hear this a lot with the powerlifting newbies anyway. Them thinking they don’t have what it takes to do powerlifting ’cause they believe they’re not strong enough. You never know unless you go to the meet and give it a try. You’ll surprise yourself once you do it. When I did my first meet, I didn’t think I would be able to do it but it ended up being easy and I can lift kind of heavy with no problem. Just gotta give it a shot. On my first powerlifting meet at Albany Strength, I went a little easy but from this point forward, I’m going to go all in each time I do a meet.
  • I’ll be picked on and judged for not lifting heavy: No you won’t. At these powerlifting competitions there is no judgemental people at all… well except for the judges but that’s it. You won’t get any judgement from the spectators or other competitors at all. There’s no ego in these things. There’s nothing but respect with each other and everyone will be friendly so don’t worry. If you can only do a 70 lb. lift then go ahead, go for it. It’s all about having fun and challenging yourself. There’s nothing wrong with lifting weights that you can handle.
  • You can get away with eating whatever you want to move up a weight class: Not really. In powerlifting, you got to continue to stick with the healthy nutrition in order to get stronger. Continue to stick with your nutrition plan as you do with bodybuilding. Keep eating your high proteins, low carb meals. Keep eating your complex carbs, healthy fats and drinking plenty of water. All that stuff. I continue to eat healthy even doing powerlifting. Good nutrition is key to getting more strength too. I do want to get big in powerlifting and move up a weight class but I want to do it without getting fat.
  • You won’t fit in: Before you go to these powerlifting meets, you’ll probably get a little worried about what kind of people will be at these things but don’t worry about it. Pretty much everyone at these powerlifting meets will be very down to earth and friendly. There’s no ego at these things at all. You won’t see any arrogant jackasses thinking they’re better than you. We’re all into this together. We want to help each other out and help motivate the competitors to be the best they can be. You’ll be surprised of how nice people are at these things. When you go to a powerlifting meet, don’t be afraid to walk up to a competitor and just say “Hi” or tell them “Good luck”, you’ll be talking with him/her in no time. You’ll even make new friends at these events too. Everybody will want you to be your best. So don’t be afraid to ask for lifting advice either.

This is about all I can think of. Enjoy the read!

Why I like to do 4 sets of all my workouts nowadays in the gym… I just like “extreme” intensity is all…

In the past, I used to do 3 sets of 10 reps in the gym. Now that I’ve been doing this for years, I’ve decided to bring my sets and reps to the next level by bringing it up to 4 sets on all of my exercises in the gym. How many reps do I usually do for each set? Usually between 8 – 12 reps which is how you want to do it. I figure if I want to get bigger and strong a lot quicker, I workout with extreme intensity.

If you ever get to see me workout in the gym, I workout like a monster. Maybe someday I’ll film myself a live facebook workout day in the gym ’cause I think that would be fun. Just to show you what I do and show you how hard I work in the gym. Seriously, I workout pretty hard which could explain to you why I’m getting bigger in size. The more intense you workout, the bigger you’ll get. I workout pretty heavy in most of my workouts too.

A lot of people just lift weights they can handle easily and do their full sets without failure. Nothing wrong with that but a lot lately I’ve been lifting weights ’til failure in most of my workouts lately and feeling really good. I figure if you want to get bigger and stronger quicker, that’s what you want to do. Workout with “intensity” and train like a bodybuilder. I don’t go easy. I’m sure you’ve seen some of the workout videos I posted on my instagram page so that’s just a hint of what I do.

I just love an intense workout ’cause it feels good and helps get things off of your system. When I say “intense” workout, I mean “intense”… up to a point when you’re lifting, you’re gruntin’ a little bit, breathing kind of hard and almost smilin’ really wide as if you’re clenching your teeth almost. That’s the kind of “intensity” I’m talking about. Train in beast mode. That’s what beast mode training is. Training in beast mode is not going easy.

Yeah, I do lift heavy but I don’t lift heavy where it’s considered “ego” lifting. I only lift the heavy weights that I can do in full range of motion. As long as you can lift a heavy set in full range of motion go ahead and lift heavy. If you lift full 12 reps easily with no trouble at all then you need to go heavy until you can’t lift the final rep. That’s how you should do things.

I have also been experimenting with lifting heavy sets and doing fewer reps like do a real heavy set and do only 3 – 5 reps for more strength. I’ve been doing that a lot too and seems to be working.

You don’t want to go in the gym for nothing. If you’re not feeling warm, sweaty and not  feeling a burn in your muscles then you’re doing something wrong. I like to go all in when I hit the gym. Make going to the gym worth it.

I figured out a way to get more muscle development ’cause you need a full contraction in all of your body parts. Get the full contraction and in full range of motion, you’ll build muscle. Good form is everything. I see too many in the gym workout in horrible form but now I take good form very seriously in all my workouts. Glad I did ’cause if you workout in good form and in full range of motion, you’ll feel much better and you’ll never get injured either.

Killed it at my second powerlifting meet yesterday… came home with 2nd place metal…

Powerlifting meet Round #2 will be yet again another successful meet. I killed it on the squats and deadlift but could have done better on the bench press, though. To explain the X’s on the bench on my scorecard, the first X, I messed up ’cause I didn’t follow the commands by mistake on that one. The first lift on bench, I pressed up too soon before the ref got to say the “press” command so that lift was disqualified even though it was a good one. The second lift on bench was a good lift at 150 lbs. As for the second X on bench at 155 lbs was a failed lift. I couldn’t get that one all the way up so I had to get the spotters to stop the lift immediately. Still though, I’m very proud of the 150 “personal record” on the bench, though. I never thought I could lift 150 on bench. I decided to challenge myself on 155 to see if I could get that one but couldn’t so my official pr on bench is 150 lbs. I’ll take it, I’m happy with that lift.

On deadlift, I seem to have lifted 265 lbs. easily so that means I could have gone for 270. Next time I do deadlift at the gym which won’t be until next weekend, I’ll give 270 a shot. Even though I’m pretty new to squats, I seem to have killed it on that too. The form looks good.

I was very proud and happy with yesterday. You get better and better at every powerlifting meet you do. When will be Powerlifting meet Round #3??? I’m hoping to do another one soon but it probably won’t be ’til the Spring or summer for me to do another one at Albany Strength. My goal is to be able bench and squat 200 lbs. or over and I want to take some time to work on that.

I gotta say though that I am loving powerlifting more and more so it probably will be a full time thing. I will do powerlifting meets at Albany Strength and at the Wilton YMCA both. I love powerlifting ’cause it’s definitely a learning experience. I’m realizing now that you’re not going to do every lift perfect ’cause every lifter makes mistakes ’cause that’s what it’s all about. Powerlifting challenges you. If you want to bring up a weight and not sure if you can do it, give it a try anyways ’cause you never know.

When you do powerlifting meets and if you do real good and kick ass, not only you’ll win awards, you will also win a lot of respect from people there. That’s what matters to me most more than the awards. You’ll get a lot of fans and supporters out of powerlifting. They’ll give you fist bumps and high fives letting you know they respect you and telling you “good job”. You know you’re getting respect with people at the meets when everybody is giving you lifting advice ’cause I got plenty of lifting advice yesterday from the pros. You know you’re doing good when you grab the powerlifting meet director’s attention.

Funny thing is, I always saw myself as weak and small but these powerlifting meets are making me realize that I am really strong. My gosh, after all the hard work I spent in the gym for over 10 years really paid off.

Even though I could have done better on the bench press, I was still very proud of yesterday.

A lot of powerlifting newbies get so scared of getting into it, though. I’ll admit that at first, I wasn’t so sure but once I did my first meet, it ended up being pretty easy. It does take a while to get used to powerlifting and to be more confident about it. I love powerlifting. I think it’s a blast to be able to show what you can do in front of an actual live audience which is awesome, plus, it’s a blast to watch the other lifters too. I mean, christ, you got people lifting at these things of all ages… people from young teenagers to people at 70 years old doing powerlifting. Age is just a number. If you want to lift then lift. Yesterday, I’ve seen young teenage girls between 15 – 17 lifting heavier weights then I can, it was fucking crazy… lmao.

I am noticing that powerlifting has become way more popular and the sport is becoming more mainstream too.

I had a great time yesterday and glad I actually went ’cause I almost wasn’t gonna do it.

Kev

I’ve been calculating the weights wrong on barbell stuff but that’s actually a good thing!

Ya know what? I’ve just noticed that I’ve been calculating the number of weights on the barbell wrong in my log book. I just go by the number of weights of what I put on the bar. I don’t include the weight of the bar itself. For example, since I wrote down that my personal record for deadlift is 220 lbs, that’s excluding the weight on the bar. I forgot to count the bar weight with that which a barbell weighs 45 lbs. So technically my personal record for deadlift right now is 265 lbs. Since I calculated my personal record on bench as 110 lbs excluding the bar, including the bar my real personal record on bench would be 155 lbs. Since I calculated my personal record on barbell squats for 70 lbs. excluding the bar, with the bar it comes up with a total of 115 lbs.

So I found out that my actual personal records for these workouts are:

Deadlift = 265 lbs.

Bench = 155 lbs.

Squats = 115 lbs.

Yep, the bar weight counts in all barbell lifts. After all this time I’ve been calculating my weights in my log book wrong ’cause I excluded the bar weight so from this point forward, I will include the bar weight from now on.

This is actually a good thing that I made this mistake ’cause it made me realize that I can actually lift more than I thought. 265 lbs. for deadlift, that’s getting close up to 300 lbs. For bench and squats, I’m making my way up 200 lbs. but getting there.

Would I stick with these new numbers as my personal records for Powerlifting Meet at the Wilton Branch Y tomorrow? Probably, yes but I’m going to try to lift 5 lbs. heavier on all of them during warm-up to see if I got it. We’ll see. I’m going to try to hit 270 lbs. on deadlift to see if I got that.

Before the meet, I’m going to try to figure out my numbers ’cause I don’t want to fail any lifts. I want ALL of my lifts to hit three white lights. Not sure how different they do their powerlifting meet at the Wilton Branch Y but I’ll find out tomorrow. It’s gonna be a fun time and can’t wait.

Kev

Day off of working out today before powerlifting meet tomorrow…

No gym day today. Today will be an off day totally. Before a power lifting meet, it’s important you need to rest the day before. No working out, no nothing. So it’s gonna be a lazy do nothing kind of day. I’m also going to bed early later tonight. The reason for all this is that you need to be full of energy and not be tired at all on meet day.

So today, I’m going to hang and chill. Relax. Play some guitar, do some reading, play video games, watch some TV, etc. Whatever. I need to focus and get my mind off of working out for the day.

So tomorrow is gonna be powerlifting meet Round No. 2 for me. Admittedly my first powerlifting meet at Albany Strength back in Aug. 31st, I went kind of easy on that one but this one I’m going to bring it and put on a show. Yep, I’m going to go heavier on this one. They don’t call it powerlifting for no reason, it’s the name of the game.

Will I come home with another trophy or award or some kind? We’ll see what happens but I didn’t get into powerlifting to win trophies or awards, I got into it to get more weightlifting strength and to improve my technique. Things like that.

Gonna be a blast tomorrow! Can’t wait! Yes, I’ll film video and take plenty of pics.

Kev

Just got my powerlifting singlet in the mail today… yeah, this is serious…

In most powerlifting meets requires you to wear a singlet with a plain t-shirt under it. A lot of powerlifting federations out there are different. At the Albany Stregnth powerlifting meet, you have to wear a singlet and plain t-shirt but at the powerlifting meet at Wilton Branch YMCA this Saturday? I believe you can wear what you want at the Wilton Branch YMCA powerlifting meet either regular gym clothes or a singlet but I’m going to be wearing a singlet at this meet.

I got this singlet off the Maxbarbell company: https://www.maxbarbell.com/

I was trying to find an affordable singlet so I found this one that I’m wearing in the pic now. It was originally priced at $50 but it was on sale for $30. I got it ’cause I liked the color and wanted to look cool at the meets. This singlet fits me perfectly and it feels comfortable too.

Sometime in the future I’m going to buy weightlifting shoes. I’m going to have to find weightlifting shoes that will go with the color of the singlet.  In other words,  I’ll have to find weightlifting shoes that are colored black and red. I found a pair on that site but it’s $104.99. I’m still gonna buy them sometime in the future, though. I really need weightlifting shoes ’cause I shouldn’t be wearing running shoes when deadlifting and squatting.

This means I’m really going to become a full time powerlifter and taking it seriously. I’m really into it and feel good about it.

Kev

Powerlifting meet – Round #2 – this time it’s going to be at the YMCA Wilton Branch, I’m definitely going!

Yeah, there is a new powerlifting meet happening but it’s going to be at the Wilton YMCA Branch. It’s awesome there is a powerlifting competition near me which is only 20 minutes away. I’m definitely going.

https://www.facebook.com/events/705178823188764/

When I say I’m going to be a powerlifter, I mean it and this is serious. This is real.

I did my first powerlifting meet at Albany Strength earlier this year on Aug. 31st and now there’s one in the town of Wilton this coming Saturday. I’m getting myself prepared for it.

For my personal record on dead lift is now 215 lbs. My personal record for bench is 110 lbs which I just hit at the gym today. For squats my personal record on that is just 70 lbs… but gonna try 80 this week.

Ya know, it’s weird that I’m able to deadlift heavy but I’m not yet a super heavy bencher and squatter. I’m working on it, though. I notice I get slightly stronger each time I do those three workouts each week.

I can’t yet bench and squat over 200 lbs. but I definitely would like to get there but taking my slow time.

I’m definitely looking forward to going to that Powerlifting meet on Saturday. It’s gonna be a blast. It’s all for a good cause too… donating money for a charity which is awesome. I’m looking forward to watching other people lift ’cause that’s gonna be a blast and I’ll try to help cheer on everyone else too.

When you go to powerlifting meets, you can’t be an arrogant prick and egomaniac. You gotta stay humble and be friendly with everybody. It’s not just about you, these meets are about helping everyone else too. This isn’t WWE or UFC. Powerlifting may be a competing sport but you can’t act like you’re better than everyone else.

Can’t wait for this Saturday and yeah, of course, I’ll film my lifts at the meet for all to see and there will be pics too.
