Book Review: Dancing With Myself

This week I finally finished reading Billy Idol’s book, “Dancing With Myself”. I have been a fan of his music for a long time. I’ve listened to his music and watched all of his videos on MTV back in my high school years. Like most, I always thought the dude was badass. The spike blond hair, the famous lip curl that he does and he also has one of the coolest singing voices in rock. Billy Idol started out playing punk music with Generation X but when he went solo he decided to take his music to a different turn by playing dance-rock music. Play rock music that you can dance to with songs like “Rebel Yell”, “Dancing With Myself”, “White Wedding” and many others. Even if you never bought his albums, I’m sure everyone have seen a video of his on MTV and heard a song of his on the radio. This guy is everywhere and he continues to be everywhere in the music industry today.

This was a very interesting book. It tells the story that goes from his childhood to today. Even though he had a difficult and challenging life growing up, he was still able to make his dreams come true by becoming a big rock star. Like most rock stars, he too went through an addiction with drugs, alcohol and sex. While he did have a lot of crazy and funny stories to tell, I was most interested in the punk music scene. Yeah, he talked a lot about the punk rock scene which was interesting stuff. I loved all the punk stories he told.

He also talked about the failure of his controversial “Cyberpunk” album, which after the release of that album… he took a long hiatus from the music business. I remember that too. I remember buying that “Cyberpunk” album when it came out on CD back in 1993. I don’t have it anymore, though because I think I got rid of that album and I regret getting rid of it ’cause I thought that was a great album even if the critical reception wasn’t very well received for that album. I thought the album was different and respected Billy Idol for doing something risky. I wanna get that album back somehow but it’s not even available in Itunes. I could probably get it from Amazon though.

One thing, though, I thought it was interesting that Billy Idol was almost hired for the T-1000 role for the film, “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”. It’s true. Billy talked about auditioning for the role with James Cameron for the film. James really liked Billy as the T-1000 but Billy couldn’t get the role ’cause of his motorcycle accident he had. I remembered a lot of stuff he talked about in the book but a few new things I learned and Billy almost landing a role in “T-2: Judgement Day” was new to me, WOW!

You should give this book a read if you’re a fan of Billy Idol’s music like me. As you can tell, I’ve been a fan of rock n’ roll music my whole life, ever since I was a kid and I used to idolize Billy Idol and still do today. After reading this book, I’ll probably get his new album, “Kings and Queens of the Underground”. I’ll get that album this week probably.

Billy Idol is one guy who totally deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it’s amazing he hasn’t been considered yet. This guy had a big hand in changing the music industry. He was also one of the first artists to help launch MTV. He was very important to MTV and he helped MTV take the world by storm with his videos. That was back in the day when MTV was a “music” station.

This book is a great read. It was easy to read and pretty quick. I couldn’t put it down and you’ll be addicted once you start reading the first page. I’m glad Billy Idol finally did his memoir.

Dickey Betts briefly responds to Allman Brothers break up… says he’s glad that they’re done but not happy with his firing…

Dickey Betts the former lead guitarist and singer of the Allman Brothers briefly responds to the Allman Brothers sudden breakup and the last show at the Beacon. Dickey doesn’t seem too upset now that he knows that the Allman Brothers are done. As a matter of fact, Dickey is really quite happy with their breakup. He’s still not happy with being booted out of the band, though. While he did give some nice compliments to the drumming of Butch and Jaimoe’s drumming skills and gave some nice compliments to Gregg’s singing, he also had some very harsh things to say about the band. Dickey says that the Allman Brothers were almost an Allman Brothers tribute band, which he actually has a valid point really.

As for why Dickey didn’t join the Allman Brothers at the last Beacon Show? He didn’t really say. He seems pretty happy with his current band that he plays with, Great Southern. Nobody knows yet on whether Dickey was invited to play or Dickey himself declined to be a part of it.

http://ultimateclassicrock.com/dickey-betts-allman-brothers-last-show/

I guess they did play some Dickey Betts, Allman Brothers tunes at the final Beacon show; however, they neglected the song, “Ramblin’ Man”. I noticed the band didn’t play that song at all. I wonder why they didn’t play “Ramblin’ Man” when that song is considered an anthem and the song helped them that made them for what they are. Guess who wrote that song? Yep, Dickey Betts wrote it. The Allman Brothers had a lot of big hits and pretty much all the hits were written by Dickey. When was the last time the Allman Brothers had radio hits after Dickey got fired?

Gregg and Dickey should have reconciled and “bury the hatchet”. Guess it didn’t happen and they still hate each other as you can see.

Kev

Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts still hate each other???

At the Allman Brothers final Beacon shows in NYC, while they did make a tribute to Duane Allman quite a lot which is the whole point of the show… the Allman’s acted like Dickey Betts never existed. In a discussion about the shows in facebook, I’ve read that the band didn’t even give a tribute or a mention to Dickey Betts. They even left out all of Dickey’s songs he wrote with the band over the years which includes the hit, “Ramblin’ Man” which is a song I love.

Last night’s final show at the Beacon was a celebration of the Allman’s but if they were going to make it a celebration they would play songs spanning their entire career… well, they sort of did that a little bit but they completed ignored Dickey Betts. I’m almost pretty sure that Dickey helped formed the band with Gregg and Duane. Like I said before Dickey was the main songwriter of the band. Dickey was the one who helped the Allman Brothers get some success and fame. He was the one that made them for what they are.

Why did the Allman’s neglect Dickey Betts at the show last night? Do you think that what the Allman’s did to Dickey was a bit disrespectful to him? Gregg and Dickey still hate each other? Seems like it. So for them to neglect Dickey like that is kind of douchey.

I love the Allman Brothers, they are the greatest American band but I wish they would show more respect to Dickey. If it wasn’t for Dickey Betts, the Allman Brothers wouldn’t have gotten where they are now. They wouldn’t have had a 45 year career. While a lot of fan appreciate Derek and Warren being great guitarists, fans of the Allman’s seem to forget that Dickey was the true member.

Dickey should have been a part of the final show last night. Gregg should have worked things out with him and tried to bury the hatchet with him or something. Hopefully, we’ll soon find out why Dickey wasn’t there There’s a lot of fans of the Allman’s wondering why Dickey wasn’t a part of it. While it is kind of sad that the Allman’s is ending this soon, it’s even more disappointing that Dickey couldn’t reunite with the band.

Kev

Why didn’t Dickey Betts play with the Allman Brothers for their final show???

In the photo above is the Allman Brothers Band saying their goodbye to their fans after finishing last night’s show which is supposedly to be their final show ever. Yep, I guess the band is really done.

The only member missing in the photo above is obviously Dickey Betts. Dickey Betts is important to the Allman Brothers ’cause he was one of the band’s founding members and Dickey wrote most of their earlier material especially their well known hit, “Ramblin’ Man” which the Brothers didn’t play at the Beacon at all. I think Gregg said once in the past that they wouldn’t play any songs written by Dickey at their shows.

Remember, Dickey got thrown out of the band a long while back because of his alcoholism and short temper plus him and Gregg don’t get along too well. You would think Gregg and Dickey would try and bury the hatchet before the final shows? Maybe Gregg did try to ask Dickey to be a part of the final shows but Dickey said “No”???

Anyway, here is the Brothers setlist from last night’s final and last Beacon show….

————————————————————————

As you can see it was a pretty long set. I read the show went on ’til like 1: 30 in the morning last night and their audience stayed for the whole show. I guess the band wanted these shows to be a celebration so they wanted to play as much music as they can possibly can.

Anyway, it kind of sucks that the Brothers are ending. I’m sure they would’ve went on longer if Derek and Warren didn’t decide to leave the band. Kind of wish I was there to see the show myself but I’m sure they’ll get released soon.

Thanks to the Brothers for 45 years of music. Wish there could have been more.

I’m pretty sure the band will release the final Beacon shows on CD and DVD/Bluray in 2015.

Jimmy Page gives the band, Royal Blood, a shout-out in this interview…

When you’re in a new band and you grab Jimmy Page’s attention — you know that band is going to be something very special. Jimmy Page gives the two man band, Royal Blood, a shout-out in this interview and Jimmy said he even went and saw them live ’cause he simply enjoyed them. It must be an amazing feeling for the two guys in Royal Blood when they find out that Jimmy Page appreciates their music!!!

Royal Blood is a kick ass band, you should youtube ’em. I’m still planning on getting their album, hopefully next week.

In defense of Taylor Swift going pop…

There’s a lot of controversy over Taylor Swift going pop for her next album, “1989” which is about to get released next week. I really meant what I said when I said that I really dug her new song, “Shake It Off” and I’m probably gonna end up getting her new album, “1989”. Admittedly, I’ve always dug Taylor Swift’s music even her country stuff.

When I say that I dig Taylor Swift’s music, I usually get knocked for it and people make fun of me for it but I don’t care. Am I supposed to have the same taste in music with the majority of the public? No. I will like what I want to. While I mostly love to listen to rock n’ roll, hard rock, metal… I would listen to a little bit of everything else and that includes some pop and country.

When it comes to Taylor Swift’s new album, “1989”, I’m seeing a lot of angry comments from Taylor Swift fans who were fans of her country music stuff. She’s getting a lot of flak for switching to pop music. She’s getting a lot of pissed off fans threatening to never support her again and they even threatened they wouldn’t buy her new album ’cause of the genre change.

Stop. Time out.

Artists switching genres is nothing new in the music business. When artists decide to do something different, they get a lot of flak for it and controversy sparks out of their genre changes. I can name a bunch of examples…

Remember when Bob Dylan made the switch from folk music to full blown rock n’roll in 1965 when Dylan went electric at Newport??? Dylan fans gave him a lot of shit for that.

Neil Young switches genres all the time. He goes from acoustic music to full band electric with Crazy Horse… it’s always back and forth with Neil. This time Neil have changed genres and stayed away from acoustic/electric by doing an album with an orchestra with his next album called, “Storytone” about to get released next week too. Neil is getting a lot of mixed criticism for that too.

I remember when Metallica made the switch from thrash metal to alternative music with the release of “St. Anger”, “Load/Reload”. People gave them shit for that too.

David Bowie often changes genres from rock n’ roll to dance and electronic music.

U2 decided to go electronic music with their albums “Zooropa” and “POP”. Yes, they got a lot of flak for that too.

Led Zeppelin did the same with their “In Through The Outdoor” album. That album was a more mellower and different than the earlier albums ’cause it had more piano driven songs on it. The critical reception to “In Through The Outdoor” wasn’t very well received ’cause people expected them to play their usual hard rock stuff and they didn’t hear that on that album.

I respect artists that tries to do something ballsy and risky. They just want to try something different and if Taylor wants to try something different, more power to her. On top of that, I don’t think Taylor’s switch to pop music is gonna be a permanent thing. Maybe she will do a Neil Young kind of thing and she’ll switch back and forth to country and pop.

I respect Taylor for this ballsy move and I’ll probably get the new album ’cause of it. I’m liking the new songs I’m hearing on it so far.

Ozzy still hopes Bill Ward will be part of the upcoming farewell reunion…

Black Sabbath is not quite finished with their career yet. They have one last album and one last tour in the works; however, the band still wants Bill Ward to be a part of it. The reason? Ozzy simply wants the four original members to finish what they started.

Bill bailed out on the last reunion ’cause he complained that he didn’t get a negotiable contract so Sabbath went ahead without him. Why? Why did Sabbath go ahead without Bill Ward and didn’t give him what he requested? Was Bill asking for too much money? That’s probably it!

Like most fans, I’m hoping they bring Bill back ’cause Sabbath deserves to go out with it’s founding members. I’m sure Bill still can kill it on the drums. I just wish he would stop being so strict and greedy. It’s just music, Bill!!! Who needs a negotiable contract!!! Just go up there and play!!! The end!!!

Slipknot, I really want to get their new album, “The Gray Chapter”…

In the past, I was never really interested in the masked and costumed metal band, Slipknot, until now. I’m very interested into getting into them. I’ve read too many interviews with the band through Guitar World magazine and the more I read about them, the more I get interested in their music. I’ve heard a few songs from their new album, “The Gray Chapter” that they just released and they really impressed the hell out of me. I think Corey Taylor and Jim Root are awesome musicians. They only have about 4 or 5 albums in their discography and I think I would want to try and get them all but I’m gonna get their new one first, though.

I know this band Slipknot is criticized for their weird masks and costumes but in the band’s defense, I think the masks and costumes are all for entertainment and for theatrical purposes. In the past, I used to be against bands who wear masks and costumes. Now I understand them. I completely understand why some bands do it. Why?

Some bands prefer to play anonymously because some of them don’t want people to know who they are. Why do some bands prefer to play music and hide their identities? Probably ’cause of the type of music they play. They write controversial lyrics in their songs and write heavy music — they probably don’t want their families and friends knowing that they play that stuff.

Another reason these bands play with masks and costumes is for entertainment and theatrical type of stuff… kind of like what Kiss and Gwar have done. You know how when you watch a play or a circus and you see people on stage wearing costumes and stuff??? Well bands wearing costumes is pretty much the same thing. Theatrical. For entertainment. They just think that bands wearing casual clothing like jeans and t-shirt is kind of boring so they want to put some excitement and thrills to their live shows.

Like I said bands wearing costumes used to bother me but not anymore. I kind of understand why they do what they do it now. I used to think they were a bunch of egotistical pricks who are out for attention but this is just their way of entertaining people. It’s their way of putting on different and creative rock concerts, ya know? Something fun.

I’ve been enjoying Slipknot more and more. Instead of bashing them and hating them, just actually listen to them. They’re really enjoyable. Looking forward to getting their new album soon. I just read an interview with Slipknot in the new Guitar World magazine with them on the cover and after reading that interview, really makes me want to get the album. I really like the band’s sound. This band really have matured and they’ve gotten better. Love their guitar sound.

Discovered this new killer band called, Royal Blood. They actually rock!!!

I’ve never heard of this new rock band called, Royal Blood before until I’ve read a small one page article about them in this months, Guitar World magazine. This is just a two man band. Just bass and drums. There is no guitar playing in this band at all. After reading that this guy plays the bass like an electric guitar, I felt intrigued by that. Just out of curiosity, I looked up this band in youtube to check them out and I was pretty impressed. These guys sound great and I’m probably gonna buy their album. They are a two man rock band and I think they are way better than the fuckin’, Black Keys.

Royal Blood is awesome. Check them out yourself! Their music have already gone viral and I think this band is gonna be really huge in the future.

Led Zeppelin vs. Spirit legal battle over “Stairway” is officially greenlighted…

This is not good news for Led Zep. The judge have sided with the band Spirit and allowed them to go ahead with the case over their claim that Led Zep ripped off one of their songs for “Stairway”. Even though this isn’t good news for Led Zep, I’m still interested in how this is gonna end. I don’t think Jimmy Page is gonna make a confession that he stole the song. Jimmy is gonna do whatever he can to defend himself.

I remember Led Zep lost their legal battle against blues legend, Willie Dixon. Could they lose against Spirit? I think no. I think Jimmy will prevail this time. That group Spirit is now gonna have to prove their case on how Led Zep stole their song which is gonna be difficult to do.

Led Zep have been accused of stealing songs from other bands & artists for years but who cares ya know? Many bands & artists steal stuff from others. Lots of the bands in the 60’s and 70’s have stole music — that includes The Beatles, The Stones, The Doors, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, etc. I’m sure they all ripped off songs from others. It happens all the time in the music business and there is no outrage from the public when other bands do it. Why does Zeppelin have to be accused of it all the time?

On top of that, I wouldn’t really call it “stealing” or “ripping off” are the wrong words to put it. I would call it more like borrowing. You borrow riffs and song ideas for your own songwriting. You borrow riffs and licks from other artists ’cause you’re big fans of their work.

Sometimes it even happens by accident. When you write a riff or a guitar lick and it sounds exactly the same as someone else’s when you didn’t know that someone else had it. These things happen.

I think Spirit will get nowhere with this. If Zeppelin loses, that’ll be very sad since “Stairway” is an important piece of music history. That’s what happens when you become big and legendary, ya know? Other egotistical bands will get all jealous and they’ll try to accuse that band of plagiarism just to get more attention and more money.

I wish Jimmy Page the best of luck. He’ll probably be the one to be in trial for this one.
