Thought: Why do unsigned musicians act like rock stars in social networking sites? It’s because, they “think” they are famous…

Unsigned musicians that have their own facebook page to promote their material and get their fans together is not a bad thing but the thing is, people don’t realize how crazy these bands can be in social networking sites. Bands facebook pages can be really crazy. They all think they are rock stars. A lot of them have big egos, that they don’t realize how much of an idiot they sound when they don’t read their own facebook status’s they post. For example, you don’t see many musicians admitting that their own talent sucks, a lot of them think they are so great, all the time. A lot of them lie about big crowds at their live gigs. A lot of them think they are bigger than their own fans. Need I go on?

A lot of musicians want to think they are popular. That’s the kind of fantasy worlds they are all living in. The point I’m trying to make here is, that local and unsigned musicians act like celebrities in facebook. I know they are not famous, but they do pretend to be.

I can tell you this right now, that I’ve never been this type of person. For those who’ve been reading my blogs for a long time, would know this.  I don’t go around calling people “fans”, I call them “people”. I don’t go around getting all excited about upcoming gigs or projects that these bands obsess over. I don’t go around plugging my gigs in front of everyone’s faces, begging people to come out, I let the people decide if they want to come out and support my music. That’s how I did things. If I didn’t get a big crowd at a show, I wouldn’t go online and whine about it like most musicians do. I’d be glad that I just played out. If I had a big crowd at a gig of mine, I wouldn’t go crazy over that either (yes, I’ve had played in front of big crowds before).

I am a musician and sometimes gig, but I leave my ego out the door. I like to be myself as a person. I never went around the music scene acting like a rock star or a celebrity that these musicians are trying to be. If someone likes my music and wants a demo CD, I would give it to them for free, I wouldn’t force people to pay for it. I’m not afraid to admit that I’m not the greatest musician in the world, and I’m not afraid to admit that I’m not into this for popularity and fame. It’s not that hard for everyone else to do the same. Almost every musician you run into, they will think they are some kind of rock god.

Thought: Teen suicides and cyberbullies…

So teens killing themselves because they get picked on for being gay is on the rise, and this is making the news both locally and nationally. While this is sad and horrible, I personally think stuff like this shouldn’t even be making the news. Cyberbullying or kids getting picked on at school, happens all the time. So the question you have to ask is, who is the guilty one here? Is it the bullies or is the teens who committed suicide ’cause of the bullying? I’m going to take the blame on the teen and not the bullies. The thing is, when you put yourself out there on the internet, you’re going to get a lot of cyberbullies and haters. Whether you put yourself out there in facebook, myspace, etc. Where ever, you’re going to expect a lot of harassment from anonymous people. That’s just the way the internet is. Those kids who killed themselves for over some computer, they are probably childish people themselves who couldn’t ignore the bullying.

Anybody can become a victim of anonymous cyberbullying. Not just gay teens. Straight people can get cyberbullied too, both straight men and women. If you’re going to get yourself on social networking sites, you gotta have guts and “IGNORE” all harassment and drama. It isn’t that hard to do. Suicide is a pretty selfish thing to do, so the kids who killed themselves over this stuff, didn’t have the balls to ignore cyberbullying and didn’t have what it takes to defend themselves.

Anonymous cyberbullies just go around looking for things to pick on and look for things to laugh at. Gotta be an adult over this stuff, not take bullying seriously, and not care what anybody thinks or says about you. When will these kids take the blame on their suicides, maybe it was them that started it all that got them to bully them. This is why underage teens shouldn’t even be using the internet.

I get my share of cyberbullying, but that’s alright, I’m cool with it. I can deal with it like a man and act like internet drama is nothing to me. Period.

Thought: Those “Like” fan pages in Facebook are absolutely nuts…

It seems that almost everyone wants publicity and fame in facebook these days, with this, “Like” fanpage. Almost every famous person or famous band/artist has an official one. Even people who are not famous, seems to be making these “Like” pages in hopes of creating a fanbase with them. Yes, I know the point with these, “Like” pages, is an easier way to help get fans online together to discuss their favorite figure or whatever publicly, but all Facebook seems to be is a popularity contest. Everyone wants to be popular in facebook. Famous bands and celebrities who have their own official, “Like” page, they just use that to promote their careers and upcoming projects. The same with people who are not famous that want to promote their careers.

Why do everyone want their own “Like” page these days? The answer is  really quite simple. “Ego” and people are selfish. It’s like, here I am, come pay attention to “me, me, me” all the time. People live in these delusional fantasy like worlds (that even includes myself), that people obsess with popularity and trying to get recognized by the public. That’s all people seem to be using the internet for these days is to promote their careers & projects, whatever they do. People will never admit that they’re sometimes delusional with facebook but they really are.

There’s nothing wrong with promoting and getting the word out, I’m not knocking that. I’m knocking the way people communicate with each other in these “like” fan pages. For example if Alice In Chains or Ozzy post a status to announce something, all these fans will start posting all these crazy comments. If they get haters bashing these bands, their fans will have their back 100%. Now whether you’re a famous band or a local band, these crazy bands would post random things just to look popular and to get their fans talking. I can write about this all day, I think you get my point and know what I’m talking about with these, silly, “Like” pages.

Whacky stuff, I tell ya.

Thought: What Facebook is mostly used for…

I have been in facebook for a little over a year or so. I’m going to make an observation on what people mostly use the site for.

Here’s my take on facebook:

  • People like to talk about what they’re doing and where they’re going in life. You’ll see people in facebook saying stuff like “(name here) is at the grocery store”, “(name here) is making a cup of coffee”, “(name here) is going to the movies”, etc. The most popular one, is “I’m going to bed”, you see it everywhere!
  • People like to vent about how much life sucks or if they’re having a bad day. If something bad happens in people’s lives off the computer, they’ll go in facebook and rant about it publicly. Then their friends will start replying to them to try to make him/her feel better. I see this all the time.
  • People like to use the site for dating and relationships. Internet dating is becoming more popular than ever. People obsess with that, “in a relationship” status option in Facebook for whatever reason. I’ve seen couples hook up because of facebook lately.
  • The weird thing about facebook is that it also gives couples (whether married couples or not) the opportunity to show their love to each other in front of everyone publicly. Not that it’s a bad thing but it can be risky in a way. There are tons of single people out there, that if they have a crush on someone who is “in a relationship” or married, they’ll be keeping an eye on that “status relationship” option, to wait until they’re single or divorced again. It happens often in facebook, almost like a virtual soap opera like you see on daytime TV.
  • People like to play facebook games like farmville, mafia wars, etc. Sometimes this is the only thing people use facebook for.
  • People like to hit the “Like” button over stupid nonsense. You know what I mean, people would hit “Like” on these ridiculous sentences for example: “true friends treat each other right”, “Please no drama”, and all these personal relationships and dating tips people hit “Like” for. I think you know what I’m talking about.

I think that pretty much covers it. Maybe the facebook movie, “The Social Network” will cover all that stuff too. People use facebook in a very strange and odd way. Maybe that’s what Jeff Zuckerberg wanted people to use facebook for so they can stay addicted and it helps get more people to register.

I try my very best to keep my life off of facebook. I use the site to talk about the entertainment industry like I do here as a way to help promote my blog site. I don’t use the site to be open about my personal life like a lot of people do in there. I use it to talk about my usual music, movies, health & fitness topics in there. I think it is what’s best. People just don’t realize what they’re doing in social networking sites.

The “Social Network” looks like an interesting movie and I look forward to seeing it! I’m a huge fan of David Fincher’s work.

Cool Video: Amber Lyon continues feud with craigslist staff about “adults service” section…

CNN’s, Amber Lyon (who is kind of a cute looking chick by the way) continues to bust on craigslist founder, Craig Newmark. She made a documentary video where she confronts Craig about the “adult services” section and she tries to ask him questions about it. I loved it when she asked him, “What are you doing to protect these girls?”, and he just stood there, staring at her, saying nothing. After that, she kept asking him questions that he wouldn’t answer, he walked away a few times. See the video here at the top of the article. Why won’t Craig talk? Because he knows he’s in trouble, and he knows what he is doing is wrong. Keep up the good work, Amber!

Thought: I miss the old days of music when there was no internet at all…

That is an old Led Zeppelin concert flyer that was made in 1968 around the time the band’s first album came out. Back in those days, that was all we had to promote music and concerts. The only promoting tool back then was ad flyers such as that one above. Why? Because there was no such thing as the internet back then. Now we do have the internet, social networking sites like myspace, facebook, twitter, reverbnation, etc. Websites like those are being used to promote music these days.  Bands no longer do ad flyers and newspaper promoting much, ’cause the internet does all the promoting magic.

The internet makes it easier for bands to get more fans. It makes it easier for bands to pretend to look popular. The internet makes it easier for bands to book gigs and even a tour. Whether bands are signed or not. Back in those days without the internet, it makes it real hard for unsigned bands to become successful. Now with the internet, it makes everything easier.People stopped buying CD’s because the internet took over the world of music with Itunes being around now as well. Back in the days with no internet, the only way fans could check out a cool band who is unsigned, is that bands hand around demo tapes/CD’s in the streets and at bar gigs. These days, all music fans have to do is listen to bands through myspace or facebook.

Why is it that all of us bands and musicians have to join the social networking site bandwagon? It’s because we’re all greedy and need the attention. That includes myself as well. If we still didn’t have the internet, I’m pretty sure all of us wouldn’t go anywhere with our music. I’m sure all of you bands would still be playing in your garages and not being out there, making it easy off the internet. The internet has clearly taken over the music world as there is too much music to listen to on here now, it’s crazy.

It is why I only support the bands only if I like their music ’cause I can’t listen to every single band on here, I don’t have the time. I like supporting other bands on here because it’s good networking with your own music. That is one way to promote your music is make friends with other bands and help them out. I’ve always done that, and sometimes bands even supported me in return by giving me free CD’s or more gigs as a gift. The internet makes it easier to help other bands and help promote them.

Do you think it was easy for Led Zep or the Beatles to get their record deals? No. That didn’t happen over night. These days, all you had to do is become a popular internet sensation and blam, you get a record deal. Just ask Justin Bieber and Susan Boyle who were big internet sensations and they got signed.

The internet is one crazy little world with the music biz, but I like it.

The craigslist “adults service” section is not gone, and it never will be…

There is a bit of controversy with craigslist that just hit the web today. As you can see, the adults service section was “censored”, it has “censored” right on it, with a black marker over it. People would immediately assume that “adult services” is gone and shut down. Really? Do you really fall for this kind of stuff? I don’t.

It is not gone. It never will be. Why?
Because the craigslist CEO, not to mention by name, has always defended the site. He would think he has every right to use the “adult service” section for craigslist, no matter the situation. Look at the craigslist blog for proof. The only reason this guy put the “censored” marker on it, was to help piss off the Connecticut Attorney General, the guy who demanded the craigslist CEO to take down the site. The “censored” marker is a sign that the craigslist CEO is claiming that he’s under, free of speech. If you think this CEO of craigslist guy will shut down the “adult services” section, think again. I think it’ll be back soon enough. Why is he obsessed with this “adult services”? I don’t know, maybe it helps make him money or maybe he is a sex addict himself?

Craigslist should not be used for sex at all. It’s not only dangering children and promoting prostitution, but adults shouldn’t be using it to get a fling. It could be dangerous for everybody. You would never know if people have STD’s or other dangerous diseases that could pass through, and you’ll never know that your sex partner could be some kind of psycho.

Craigslist should be used for an ad site to sell things. That’s what it should be used for. If people are so desperate to get laid, there are plenty of other adult personals online where you can go to that is not craigslist. If you’re desperate to get laid, go to a strip club or go to a bar to get hooked up with people. Many people that go to craigslist personals are not so attractive or hot to begin with because internet dating or casual sex is for people with no social lives, anyway. If the person in craigslist appears to be hot, then it is probably some fake anonymous spam promoting another personals site.

The “adults services” will be back before you know it. If the craigslist CEO were to shut it down for good, then he would have deleted off the site completely, but if he just put up “censored”, he’s not fooling anybody. So don’t get all excited yet. I think it’s a great thing that people in the US are taking a stand on this. Keep up the good work!

Brock calls out a company called, “Afton Live”, aka scam artists…

There is a company that helps bands & musicians that is sparking some controversy on the web with unsigned musicians all over the U.S. Does your band or solo act have a myspace, official website and a Reverb Nation page? Did you get an e-mail message from a guy who works for “Afton Live” a company that claims they help book bands gigs? The guy will ask you if you’re interested in performing at this certain venue, at a certain date.

For example, I will copy & paste this guy’s e-mail he sent me in Reverb Nation, I will leave guy’s name out of it:

hey kev brock

… i get to browse around,, find artists i like in albany, and try to get them on some of my shows. i like your stuff, wanna see if i can get you in on this show i have comin up at red square on oct 3rd?

def seems like youd fit well on that one or some others i have in the next couple months, so lemme know ok? email me back at:

alb@aftonlive.com

then i can get you all the info you need to start bookin some shows

Sounds too good to be true right? You get an e-mail like that, and you get immediately excited, but looking at that e-mail address, “aftonlive.com”, hmmmm, that sounds a little fishy to me. I decided to google that up to see what it was all about.

Turns out that these guys are scam artists. They scam money from musicians. I read that you pay this company to get gigs. They probably want you to pay a lot of money like: $300 or more. I also read that if they book you a gig, the more tickets you sell from the fans, you get nothing in return.

Read some more stuff on it here on how it is a scam.

Notice on that Afton Live website, they don’t say where the company is located. They also don’t say how they charged to get gigs.

A musician named Zax Avila have already been a victim by them and plenty of other musicians have been victims as well. How to tell whether these companies are a scam or not? Well read more here.

When you want to become a successful musician, NEVER pay first to play, when it’s you the one that should be getting paid. Never go for gigs that ask you to pay first. I never went for that. You either play gigs for free or accept gigs from the venues themselves asking you to book a gig to be paid.

On top of that, you can become a successful musician on your own and do it all your own way without these shady companies doing it for you. How can you become a successful musician on your own without a promotions company, manager, or agent? I will write another blog post coming right up later on. Be very careful of these, “Pay to Play” companies trying to get you to work with them. Don’t buy into it.

Facebook is full of viruses and scams…

All that stuff in facebook: “The Dislike Button”, “The Profile Viewing Spy” (that software that allows you to see who’s viewing your profile), anything inviting you to scope out a video, clickjacking, etc. All that stuff is a virus and scam. What bothers me is that a lot of people that use facebook actually believe the “Dislike” button and “profile viewing spies” actually work, when they are actually a dangerous virus that could fry your computer. It just proves that a lot of people aren’t very smart with the internet  and don’t know much about the world wide web.

I use my facebook profile very carefully. I’m always careful on what I look at and can always tell if it’s a virus/scam or not. People fall for this stuff ’cause they are not computer literate.

The reason facebook would never add a real “dislike” button to the site is because, facebook has always been a target of cyberbullying. Even if facebook knows that everyone wants a “dislike” button, they don’t add it to the site for a pretty good reason. It’s a cyberbullying issue, that’s why. They want to keep teens and even adults safe. I mean what if you put up a really good status, that wasn’t all that bad and so many people gives you the thumbs down anyway?

Besides, why would you want people to give you the thumbs down on your statuses and comments? If you don’t like something being posted in facebook, just simply ignore it and don’t give it the thumbs up.

I don’t understand why people obsess with the dislike button and don’t understand why people obsess with “Who is viewing your profile”. It’s just a bunch of people living in their own delusional fantasy worlds. The reason I think they want the dislike button and the “who’s viewing your profile” stuff is that they want to see if people are actually paying attention to them. People are afraid that no one else is paying attention to their profiles. It’s an attention craving thing. They don’t want to feel lonely in social networking sites.

CD Review: Jaze Wade “Light Between Space”

Supporting other musicians, is one of my favorite things to do. It doesn’t just have to be musicians in my area. I support musicians all over the world if I like their music, whether they are signed or not. It doesn’t matter. I just love listening to music whether the musician is famous or not. Jaze Wade is a musician from Shreveport, LA. He describes himself as an electronic and alternative rock musician. When I gave this album a listen that I downloaded from Itunes, he wasn’t kidding. There’s plenty of electronic and upbeat guitar driven rock music. When I started playing this album on my Ipod, I was immediately drawn to it and was hooked. The songs are catchy, different and unique. Jaze’s singing is listenable. You can really hear his passion and emotion with his vocals during the song, “Into the Faded Sun” which is one of my favorite’s off the album. The song “My Sweet” has a 70’s sound to it, it starts off with acoustic playing and here comes great guitar solos over the intro. The reason I love this album so much is because it reminds me of David Bowie. It seems he has a lot of David Bowie influence. He’s a talented songwriter, check out Jaze Wade. He has a gift with his music. The production on the sound of the album is really awesome. Professionally recorded and all. Great work Jaze, and looking forward to hearing more work from you in the future!

Listen to a few tracks off “Light Between Space” from his myspace here:
