This Day In Music: 3/7/12

– In 1962: The Beatles recorded their first radio appearance, at the Playhouse Theatre, Hulme, Manchester, for the BBC radio program Teenager’s Turn – Here We Go’. After a rehearsal, the Beatles put on suits for the first time and, along with the other artists appearing on the program, record the show in front of a teenage audience.

– In 1965: During a Rolling Stones gig at The Palace Theatre in Manchester, England a female fan fell from the circle while the group were playing. The crowd below broke her fall and the girl escaped serious injury just breaking a few teeth.

– In 1966: Brian Wilson released ‘Caroline No’ the first solo single by a Beach Boy. Before it evolved into the final song we know today, the song was originally written as ‘Carol I Know’.

– In 1967: Working on their next album The Beatles recorded additional overdubs for ‘Lovely Rita’, including harmony vocals, effects, and the percussive sound of a piece of toilet paper being blown through a haircomb.

– In 1969: Led Zeppelin appeared at the Bluesville 69 Club at the Hornsey Wood Tavern, Finsbury Park, London, England. The venue was a function room at the back of the pub, and was so small that the stage was only just big enough for John Bonham’s drums, and the rest of the group had to stand on the floor at the same level as the crowd.

– In 1970: Simon and Garfunkels album ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ started a ten week run at No.1 on the US chart. The duo had split-up by the time of release.

– In 1973: During a showcase gig at Max’s Kansas City, New York, CBS records boss John Hammond suffered a heart attack. The event was to mark the signing of his new act Bruce Springsteen.

– In 1976: Elton John was immortalised in wax at Madame Tussauds in London. The first rock star to be so since The Beatles.

– In 1987: The Beastie Boys became the first rap act to have a No.1 album in the US with their debut album, ‘Licensed To Ill.’

If WWE wants to draw bigger ratings, then they need to turn John Cena heel…

The only reason WWE will not turn John Cena heel (badguy) is ’cause they’re afraid it might hurt the ratings, lose sponsors, and advertisements. Everyone wants Cena to turn into a full fledged heel, even I do. I think a Cena heel turn would be interesting. I think his super hero image is getting old. I don’t understand why the WWE thinks a Cena heel turn would hurt the company. It won’t. If Cena turns into a badguy that would certainly bring in more viewers, and it would get more people interested. It would also help bring the old fans back who stopped watching wrestling. Yep, I think WWE needs a Cena heel turn pretty badly.

They seem to be dropping hints about it, with his feuds against Kane and Zack Ryder. They seem to be hinting that Cena could get a heel turn at this year’s Wrestlemania. Will it happen? I don’t think so. His match against the Rock will probably end with Cena being the hero again.

I have started watching RAW again, to try and keep up with the storylines of Wrestlemania, to see what’s going on. I’m not sure if I will watch Wrestlemania or not. It will probably turn out to be a disappointing Wrestlemania like the last few were. For “Wrestlemania 28” on April 1st, would probably have like 1 or 2 great matches and the rest would be okay.

I’m sure Triple H vs. the Undertaker and Cena vs. The Rock would end up being the best matches.

Professional wrestling is really falling downhill though. I really feel bad. The early days of WWE and WCW were really great. It’s just sad the way wrestling is today. TNA Impact is having problems too. I still respect the wrestlers and performers ’cause they work hard. The early days of wrestling were all about wrestling, now it’s all family entertainment. Sad.

On RAW lately, there’s been mostly promos that were too long. Not much wrestling. When there is wrestling, it doesn’t turn out to be an actual wrestling match, just silly stuff.

I’m probably gonna end up watching “Wrestlemania” ’cause I want to see the HHH/Undertaker and the Rock/Cena match. I still haven’t lost my passion for professional wrestling. I will always love it dearly, I just hate how it is today.

Soon when the Wrestlemania 28 card is completed, I’ll post my predictions.

Film Review: The Artist

Starring: Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell
Directed by: Michel Hazanavicius

Today, I have seen the movie, “The Artist”. The movie that won, “Best Picture”, at this year’s Oscar awards show. I just had to see the film for myself so I can find out why it won, “Best Picture”.

Before the movie, I did pick up, “Game of Thrones – Season 1” on DVD and the new Springsteen album, “Wrecking Ball”. On with my review…

Plot/synopsis: This movie is set in Hollywood between the years 1927 – 1932 (back in those days, it used to be called, “Hollywoodland”). Silent film star, George Valentin (Jean Dujardin), celebrates the release of his film, “A Russian Affair” at the premiere. There, he meets a young woman named, Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), who is a big fan of Valentin’s acting career. The next day after, the two of them find themselves on the cover of Variety where Peppy gives a kiss on George’s cheek. Peppy drew a lot more attention than George and his new film instead. Peppy later, auditions for a role for a film as a dancer as she is of course, hired on the spot.

George began to fall crazily in love with her, but she has become a bigger star than him as years went along. As the 1930’s gets closer, sound film is introduced (movies with talking). As sound film is introduced, this began to turn George Valentin’s life upside down.

After seeing this film finally, I can now see why this film won, “Best Picture”. It certainly deserved the win. This was a beautifully made film. While this is the return of “silent film”, it’s not all the way a “silent film”. Not trying to give spoilers, but get the hint of “sound film” being introduced. That’s what the film is, it’s an introduction of “sound film”, movies with talking.

I was blown away with this film. So far, it’s the best film of 2012. Everything about this film is perfect. The writing, the acting, the musical score, etc. I wasn’t even bored one bit, and was entertained all the way through. Silent film may seem boring, but if you actually give this film a try, you won’t be bored at all. It was very enjoyable, and heartfelt. Powerful.

I was impressed with Jean Dujardin, so he definitely deserved the “Best Actor” win for the Oscars. John Goodman and James Cromwell was great as well. The real star we’re talking about here, is that dog in the film. The dog is what made the movie enjoyable. Without the dog, the film wouldn’t have mattered.

I love silent film. It’s beautiful art, so this deserves to make a comeback. This movie was filmed just like it was a real silent film. After watching this movie in theater, I kind of felt like I was in the 1920’s years. This film totally made you feel like what it would be like to watch a movie in theater like that back in those days. This movie, I believe, was a homage to Hollywoodland.

This film was definitely a masterpiece. Like I said once before, after this film, I can see Hollywood making more new silent movies. I hope Hollywood does make more. Could silent film over shadow the comeback of 3D movies??? That’s what I’m kind of hoping ’cause silent film is better than 3D, in my opinion.

Definitely check this movie out soon before it stops playing.

Score for “The Artist” = (**** “4 stars” as in Excellent)

Musician Birthdays: David Gilmour (guitarist, singer of Pink Floyd and he also has a solo career, born in 1944)

– In 1965: The Temptations went to No.1 on the US singles chart with the Smokey Robinson penned song ‘My Girl’, making the group the first male act to have a No.1 for Motown, The single only reached No.43 in the UK but made No.2 when re-issued.

– In 1966:  The Rolling Stones started recording sessions for their tenth UK single ‘Paint It Black’ at RCA studios in Hollywood.

– In 1967: The Beatles recorded sound effects onto the song ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ at Abbey Road studios in London. The beginning audience murmurs and sounds of a band preparing for a performance are added, along with screams from a tape of the Beatles in concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

– In 1970: Charles Manson released an album called ‘Lie’ to help raise money for his defense in the Tate-LeBianca murder trial. The album jacket was made to look like a cover of Life magazine with the letter f removed from the word Life. In the mid sixties, Manson had been a wanna-be musician who befriended Beach Boys’ drummer Dennis Wilson, eventually talking the group into recording one of his songs, ‘Cease To Exist’. The title was changed to ‘Never Learn Not To Love’ and was released as the B side of the single ‘Bluebirds Over The Mountain’, which eventually climbed to number 61 in the US in early 1969.

– In 1971: Led Zeppelin appeared at the National Boxing Stadium, Dublin, Ireland, the group’s first show in Dublin, where they played ‘Stairway To Heaven’ live for only the second time.

– In 1998: Oasis singer Liam Gallagher appeared handcuffed in a Brisbane court on charges of head butting a fan during a gig in Australia. Gallagher was released on bail.

– In 2004: David Crosby was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon and marijuana after leaving his bag in a New York hotel. The luggage was found by a hotel employee looking for identification, finding instead a handgun and marijuana. The employee called authorities, and Crosby, discovering the missing luggage himself, telephoned to say he would return for it. He was met by New York police, who arrested him.

– In 2009: Michael Jackson was mobbed by screaming fans as he took his two youngest children to see Oliver! at Drury Lane. The youngest two of Jackson’s three children – seven-year-old Prince Michael II (known as Blanket) and 11-year-old Paris, hid their faces as they were escorted through the crowd. Jackson was in London, England to announce his series of summer concerts at the O2. Jackson died three weeks before the shows were to start.

Come on Rush, stop apologizing you big coward!!!

Rush Limbaugh continuing to apologize to Sandra and the public for his choice of words, is doing nothing but showing the coward that he really is. I’m not sticking up for the guy but he really didn’t do anything wrong, think about it. All he did was spoke his mind toward Sandra’s speech in Congress about contraception and birth control. If he didn’t say anything about it, somebody else would have. She made the speech public, and like I said before, she’s going to have to expect a negative reaction about it. Rush did not start the controversy, she did. She’s the one who started this debate and the first to bring it up to begin with. All Rush did was respond to it. She’s the one who should be getting all the backlash and not Rush. All Rush did was getting paid to do what he’s supposed to do.

Movies on DVD over the weekend…

Over the weekend, I watched 3 movies on DVD, so I thought I would give them a brief review:

  • “Hugo” – This is the new Martin Scorsese directed film, which is set in the 1930’s in Paris, which is about a boy named Hugo Cabret who lives in the walls of a train station. He fixes clocks and other things. He doesn’t have anything else in his life but the automaton that doesn’t work, and it needs a heart shaped key to get fixed. There is this mystery building with the automaton and his father. On with my thoughts on the film, I think this is a very different film for Martin Scorsese who is one of my favorite directors of all time. Over the years, Scorsese almost always did films for the adults. He never did films for children until now. It’s about time he’s done something for kids and he did a good job at it too. I loved, “Hugo”, definitely one of the best films of 2011. Told a good story and the visuals were amazing. Definitely see this if you haven’t.
  • Super 8 – This is the new JJ Abrams directed, Steven Spielberg produced collaboration, that stars Kyle Chandler in the leading role. This movie is set in 1979 in a small town of Ohio, where a group of kids get together to film their own low budget zombie movie. While filming the movie at a train station, the train mysteriously crashes for no reason, and now a mysterious alien is out on the loose. This movie was pretty good and entertaining but not the best ever. The movie was a bit too predictable, the writing could be improved. What I liked most about it, was the action, the musical score, and Kyle’s character (it was different than Coach Eric Taylor for sure). It was no surprise that the alien turned out to be a lovable & friendly one, but hey, it’s a Spielberg movie too.  I’m sure he gave that idea to JJ.
  • The Way – Well the Emilio Estevez directed and Martin Sheen starred movie is finally out on DVD. It was an independent released movie so it wasn’t shown in that many theaters in the US. This movie is about a man named Tom, whose son has died while travelling to the Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of Saint James. It’s a pilgrimage route to the Cathedral, where apostle Saint James is buried. Yes, you bet, this is a pretty religious movie and a pretty good one too. I enjoyed it. Martin Sheen’s performance was great. Even though Emilio didn’t play in the film much, he did a good acting job too. The film was funny and entertaining. It was also a sad movie too. “The Way” was actually pretty enjoyable, and I believe Martin Sheen was snubbed of the Oscars for Best Actor as well.

That’s it. Enjoy.

Band advertisements when looking for musicians to form a band…

Just for kicks, I like to read through craigslist and crumbs for the band advertisements. Musicians looking for other musicians to form a band. I must be honest, that most musicians are horrible when it comes to writing ads. If most of these musicians claim they are so professional at what they do, you’d think they would make a professional enough looking band ad?

Most of the band advertisement are some of the worst writing skills I’ve ever seen. Plus a lot of them are kind of negative and a bit egotistical. How can they be?

Almost all of them say they are an “established” band, when I’m sure they aren’t really “established”. A lot of them try to make themselves look good. They also say, “No egos” a lot in band ads which is kind of negative. When you say that stuff in your ad, it makes you the ego-maniac instead. You need to be careful of what you say in your ads or you won’t get many replies or none at all.

I’ve also seen a lot of ads with just one or two sentences written with no detail at all.

If you want to get other musicians interested in your ad, you need to catch their interest in some way. By explaining everything in a more positive attitude. Explain how many members you want and what instruments you’re looking for. Explain the age range, explain the genre you’re going to play.

“No egos, No drugs, and no alcohol” has been said a lot in those ads but I disagree with it. It is kind of rude and disrespectful. Make your ad fun & interesting like post a few lyric samples or mp3 samples of your music, that also helps.

I shouldn’t be giving this advice when I never had a band, but when I do, this will be a good lesson for me as well. Write a long ad, not a short one. Explaining everything in detail of what you’re looking for really helps get a lot of responses in. Post pictures too if you have ’em. Make it interesting. It’ll help get them interested in auditioning for you.

Cool Video: How would Rick Santorum make a good president? Watch this video…

This is a good video. It’s so positive all the way through. He doesn’t attack any of the candidates and he just focuses on the issues like he’s been doing all along. I don’t see what makes him crazy and insane at all. Maybe this is why people hate the guy ’cause he’s too nice, too honest, and too smart.

He’s the only president that respects the constitution and seems pretty serious on reviving the economy.

Romney maybe ahead still in the GOP, but Rick still has a chance. This is why they call it a “race”. I’m looking forward to Super Tuesday this week.
