Netflix Pick (PS3): Hobo With a Shotgun…

Last night for my Saturday night movie, I decided to watch “Hobo With a Shotgun” because the plot sounded interesting to me.

In the film, Rutger Hauer plays a homeless man who moves into a city named, Hope Town. Which is a city that has a pretty high crime rate. The city of Hope Town, is full of gangs, burglars, rapists, drug users, prostitutes, pedophiles, and corrupt cops. Rutger Hauer’s character , who is called the Hobo, becomes the town’s hero by fighting crime with a shotgun. A prostitute named, Abby, becomes the Hobo’s friend because he saved her life from two rapists from a gang that was lead by a leader named, The Drake. The Drake finds that the hobo is becoming a hero of this town and he wants to kill him out of jealousy rage.

Enough with the plot, but I would have to say I was very impressed with this movie. The movie is a very short 1 hour and 25 minutes long, but the movie was fun and a blast to watch. Rutger Hauer was such a badass in this flick. It was a great action ride. Lot of cool action sequences and gun fights. Warning though: this film is very gory, violent and graphic in this film. This film will make your stomach turn a little bit. Nonstop action and blood.

The movie is filmed old school style even though it was new. It’ll make you feel like watching a 70’s B-movie. It felt like a Quentin Tarantino or a John Carpenter flick even if those two guys didn’t do the movie. The film was directed by Jason Eisener.

After watching this film, I wish there could be a sequel now, but there probably won’t be because of the ending. I won’t spoil things for you but I can give you a hint that the good guys don’t always win in this movie. That’s another thing that I liked about it.

The Drake was a really cool movie villain too and he’ll piss you off every time you saw his face on screen. You get all these superhero comic book movies with some guy dressed up in a suit, saving the day, but a homeless guy have to fight crime too right? This movie is actually pretty realistic too, I was surprised. You also felt sorry and kind of sad for the Hobo too.

I really liked the film a lot. One of my favorite action films of this year. Check it out when you get a chance.

Why the goth look on Lisbeth Salander???

The goth look on Lisbeth Salander played by Rooney Mara for David Fincher’s “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and Noomi Rapace played Lisbeth for the Swedish version, is being questionable by some people. Some of you may ask, why the goth look? I can see why some people would feel uncomfortable with her look. I’ve seen plenty of real women that has a similar goth look.

Before Stieg Larrson created this Lisbeth character for the Millennium series, he had this weird and messed up vision in his head of what Pippi Longstocking would have looked when she’s a full grown adult. Pippi Longstocking was a very popular character for children’s books in Sweden. Pippi Longstocking was also pretty well  known in the U.S. too. Everything about Lisbeth is Pippi Longstocking inspired.

If you read the Millennium books, Lisbeth has the words, “V. Kulla” spray painted on the front door of her apartment. Where does “V. Kulla” came from? It’s the abbrievation of Villa Villekulla which is the name of Pippi’s house in the children’s books. Salander originally was born with red heair but she dyed it to black. Pippi had red hair too. Lisbeth’s face is very similar to Pippi as well.

In the books, Lisbeth is an expert researcher and a pro computer hacker. Before, Mikael Blomkvist met this woman in the books, he kept picturing her as a smart, rich, and beautiful lady. Nope. When he actually met her in the first novel, she turned out to be a scary looking goth girl instead. Lisbeth wasn’t rich, she had financial troubles and would do just about anything for money. That’s why she agreed to work for Mikael ’cause she was desperate for a job. While she can be a tough and difficult lady to get along with, there is a heartfelt and emotional part about her too. She can be a fun loving girl at times too.

I think the reason for the goth look is not only for the entertainment part of it, without it, people wouldn’t pay attention to the books. The Millennium series wouldn’t be popular without the goth look. They want people to be scared of her look at first, but when you actually get into the character, you’ll think to yourself, “Wow, she’s actually a great character”.

The reason for her tough girl attitude, is that she had a tough life growing up. Everybody treated her like garbage, she was raped, etc. As a 12 year old, Lisbeth, set her own father on fire, because he beat her mother that left her with permanent brain damage.

The goth look is so she can be a different and new person. The look is her way of moving on from her dark past. She wanted to move forward and not look back. She felt that she could be a better person with that look.

I really am looking forward to David Fincher’s version, and I hope he stays true to the novel, this time, and not leave anything out. I will be there to see this in theater. I still haven’t read the other two Millennium books, “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicks the Hornet’s Nest” but I’ll get to them soon. There are still other books I need to catch up on.

Report: Yeah! Baby! Yeah! Mike Myers finally signs to Austin Powers 4!!!!

It’s been a while since Austin Powers have been on the big screen, hasn’t it? Yes, it sure has! Well, Austin Powers is finally coming out of his hiatus and he’s about to make a huge return!!! Mike Myers finally signed to star as Austin Powers and Dr. Evil for the fourth time.

Mike’s last couple of film probjects were “The Love Guru”, his cameo in “Inglourios Basterds’ and third “Shrek” film. He is also most famous for his Saturday Night Live role as Wayne Campbell for “Wayne’s World”.

Read more on the story, here.

I’m not that big of an Austin Powers fan but it’s good news that he’s finally getting another film. I only loved the first Austin Powers movie, the other two were okay.

Hopefully, Verne Troyer will reprise his role as Mini-Me. I’m sure he will come back too.

Cool Video: Hear some of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s theme song for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” here…

Some of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” leaks online. I like it. It’s very dark and creepy.

The story revolves around a journalist named, Mikael Blomkvist, who teams up with the young Lisbeth Salander on the search of a missing woman who disappeared 40 years ago. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” hits theaters, Dec. 21st of this year.

Can’t wait for this movie. Love the book. I hope the American version is much better than the piece of shit, Swedish version.

Enjoy.

Netflix Pick (DVD): Piranha 3D

Last Sunday night, I finally got around to watching the new “Piranha” remake. A Netflix DVD rental.

The film stars Elizabeth Shue, Jerry O’ Connell and Christopher Lloyd. All 3 actors who starred in a bunch of iconic movies from the ’80’s.

The story is taken place at Lake Victoria where young college kids have their Spring break and have their parties. It isn’t just a regular party, it’s a wild one. There are bikini babes everywhere, and there’s a DJ spinning techno music where all college students would dance. The thing is, all the college students are partying above the lake where they would have the dance floor on a floating stage and kids would party on jet skis and other boats. The leading character, Jake has a crush on this girl named, Kelly, and they ended up meeting another guy named, Derrick (Jerry O’ Connell) who is an online video pornographer. Derrick hires Jake for a job so he can help Derrick find good filming spots on his boat to film porn movies with lesbian women. Of course, things go wrong when the piranha’s underwater are swimming around looking for human flesh to feed on.

Enough with the plot. Now on with a brief review. Movie fans and critics are calling this movie, the worst movie of 2010, but really? Did I watch the same movie they watched? I didn’t find anything wrong with it really. It was a very enjoyable flick. I actually liked it and didn’t see anything wrong with it. It’s just a good popcorn horror film. It’s like a B-movie for sure. I enjoy movies like that. It’s one of those movies where you can watch in the summer for sure. I thought the movie was gory, sexy, and it was even scary in some parts. Yes, the movie was whacky, silly and humorous but that’s what I liked about it.

I loved the opening scene with Richard Dreyfuss, plus Christopher Lloyd was just great in the film even though he wasn’t in it much. I also loved Jerry O’ Connell’s performance, plus Elizabeth Shue is looking much older. Best of all, there’s a lot of topless women and naked tits throughout the film as well. When people slammed this movie when it first came out, I wanted to see it myself in theater but missed it. Never got around to seeing it until now. It wasn’t a bad film and I so am looking forward to the sequel now.

Cool Video: Bane blows up Heinz Field, the home of the Pittsburgh, Steelers, on the set of “The Dark Knight: Rises”…

Controversial behind the scenes footage of “The Dark Knight: Rises” leaks to youtube. As some of you know, the legendary NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers make their cameo for the movie. Here is their scene in the video below. Tom Hardy as Bane warns everyone that he will take control of Gotham and later he blows up Heinz Field, as the extras in the crowd cheer on.

The explosion in the video is obviously fake but the editing department will add the real explosion in with CGI and stuff when the final take of the scene is done.

Check out the interesting videos below. So far, “The Dark Knight: Rises” looks to be a thrilling movie. Hope it’s just as good as the second movie.

It’s official: I will buy movies on Blu Ray from this point on…

After I complete the “Superman: Motion Picture Anthology” Blu Ray set this weekend which I am almost finished with it, I think from this point on, I will buy my movies on Blu Ray. Why? Because DVD is quickly losing it’s popularity. Every time I browse around movies at the stores, I am noticing the Blu Ray section is getting much bigger than the DVD section. Blu Ray is a pretty hot thing right now. When I’m at Best Buy, I like to browse around the Blu Ray section. Not buy anything but browse around and there’s a lot of stuff I’d like to get. I’ll get 1 or 2 Blu Ray movies at a time because they are pretty pricey. I’ll replace all of my favorite movies that I have on DVD to Blu Ray instead. I am liking Blu Ray more ’cause the picture and sound is definitely better than DVD. There is a big difference. Watching movies on Blu Ray is also better than watching movies in the theater.

Blu Ray is really cool.

Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle looks like Julie Newmar’s version of Catwoman…

So Warner Bros. showed us what Bane looks like for the “Dark Knight: Rises”, here is what Anne Hathaway looks like as Selina Kyle. Selina in the first pic is not quite in the Catwoman costume yet. She’s wearing the black leather suit, but no cat ears yet. Look like we’ll see Selina Kyle throughout most of “Dark Knight: Rises” and Catwoman won’t show until the end of the film. This isn’t the Catwoman suit yet, and I’m sure Warner Bros. will show us what Catwoman will look like soon. So far Anne Hathaway looks very much like Julie Newmar from the classic TV series. Look like Selina stole the bat-pod.

Warner Bros. is hard at work with both Batman and Superman, they are on a roll.

Thought: What I hope to see in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” film…

Looking at that picture again, that’s an angry Superman who’s about ready to kick your ass. The photo says it all, folks. I think the next Superman movie will be an action packed movie and that’s what I’m hoping for.

Notice the S shield Symbol. It’s the classic logo from the 1930’s in the “Action Comics” years back? Noticing the new Superman suit is kind of old fashioned, I’m thinking the movie will be taken place in the 1930’s like the old comics.

I just hope Superman won’t show up until the very end of the film. We want Superman to show up right away in the film. In Richard Donner’s “Superman: The Movie” it took forever for Superman to finally show up toward the middle. I hope that won’t happen with this movie.

I’m sure Warner Bros. will release pics of Michael Shannon as General Zod soon, and that’s what I can’t wait to see! Hopefully Michael Shannon’s version of Zod will be different than Terence Stamp’s look.

Film Review: Cowboys & Aliens

Starring: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell

Directed by: Jon Favreau

Today, I decided to go to the mall for something to do and get out of the house for a while. There were two great movies out that I wanted to see. I had a choice between “Cowboys & Aliens” or “Captain America: The First Avenger”. I ended up seeing “Cowboys & Aliens” first. As for shopping, I didn’t buy much. All I picked up was Jaycee Dugard’s book “The Stolen Life”, but I’m not going to read it yet because there are other books I need to catch up on.

On with my review…

Plot/synopsis: The Old West.. where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world. 1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known. Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been…

It’s another winner for Jon Favreau. It felt like Indiana Jones and James Bond 007 teaming up together except it’s taken place in the Wild West. Yes, the plot to the movie sounds goofy and whacky but most people don’t know that this movie was adapted from the graphic novel created by, Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. The story mixes western and sci-fi together.

For the Western part of the story, it has everything there is in the cowboy genre. The beginning of the film starts off as a serious Western film, then toward the middle it gets to the sci fi parts, when the aliens come invading their town. Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig’s character) is a mean and tough character that you don’t want to mess with, but there’s a serious and emotional part about him too. He wakes up in the middle of Wild West and finds this strange looking bracelet on his wrist that looks like some type of machine. He’s trying to remember how he got there and where the strange bracelet came from.

Then we get the hilarious Harrison Ford who plays Col. Dolarhyde who is also pretty mean and tough. With his character you get a little bit of Han Solo and Indiana Jones both at the same time. When the characters are speaking their dialogues in the film, Col. Dolarhyde would come back with some smart ass jokes that are pretty funny. Plus, Harrison Ford is such a perfect actor to play Dolarhyde because Harrison looks exactly like him in the graphic novel. Harrison did a great job nailing the character down.

There are so many alien invasion movies over the years but most of them are the same thing. Just aliens invading the city and then they have the US Army fight them off. Not with this movie. This time it’s cowboys vs. aliens. Which is what I like. Something different for once.

The action scenes were very fun and entertaining. It was a pretty action packed movie all the way through. I thought the script was pretty well written for a popcorn action movie. This is definitely one of the better popcorn action flicks I’ve seen in a while. Check it out!

Score for “Cowboys & Aliens” = *** (3 stars as in “excellent”)
