Bret “The Hitman” Hart… Montreal Screwjob incident… just some thoughts…

So over the summer during this covid-19 pandemic, I’ve read a few wrestling books to do more research and learning about the controversial wrestling incident that went on between Bret The Hitman Hart vs. Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997 ppv. One book I’ve read was Bret Hart’s “Hitman – My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling” and the other book I’ve read was “The Death of WCW” by R.D. Reynolds and Bryan Alvarez. Both of those books were really good and they both talked about the “Montreal Screwjob” a little bit.

To those of you who don’t know anything about the Montreal Screwjob, well let me break it down to you to tell you what it’s all about. The controversy revolves around Bret The Hitman Hart, Shawn Michaels and WWE owner Vince McMahon. Bret and Shawn Michaels not only had an on screen TV feud for years, they also hate each other in real life as well. They had both an on-screen and off-screen feud. Bret won the WWE/WWF title at Summerslam 1997 and Bret signed a contract to WCW and was about to jump ship to there. This got Vince all worried and didn’t want Bret to bring the WWE title to WCW and Bret said he wasn’t gonna do that, it wasn’t his plan. Hart was set to defend the title against Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997. McMahon originally wanted Bret to lose the title to Shawn at Survivor Series 1997 but Bret wasn’t going for it since he didn’t want to lose in his home country which makes sense. In a meeting… Bret, Shawn and Vince agreed that Bret would retain the title at Survivor Series 1997 by disqualification and Bret would lose the title or forfeit later on.

When it came to Survivor Series 1997 night where the match was taken place, Bret vs. Shawn match started. A little later in the match Shawn put Bret in his well-known finisher the Sharpshooter which is a submissive finisher. All of a sudden, Vince comes out to the ring and orders Earl Hebner to ring the bell which causes HBK Shawn Michaels to win the WWE title by submission.

It is called a “screwjob” ’cause Bret got screwed by McMahon. Vince promised Bret that he would retain the title by disqualification but Vince decided that HBK Shawn Michaels would win the WWE title on the last minute.

After that, this angered Bret so much… spitting Vince in the face at ring side and then Bret started destroying things. Bret even punched Vince in the face and knocked him out backstage. Vince and Bret feuded in the media for a long while but later on, they ended up burying the hatchet for good. Bret wanted to bury the hatchet with Vince ’cause he didn’t WWE burying his legacy and Bret wanted to be remembered. Bret got into the WWE Hall of Fame finally in 2006 and WWE made a DVD for him.

In the aftermath of the Screwjob incident, this lead to Vince’s iconic feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin and forced Vince to perform on television as this evil owner bad guy. This is what brought Mike Tyson in to feud with Stone Cold, though.

The Montreal Screwjob incident is the most talked about controversy in wrestling and is still being talked about even after all these years. I can see why Bret is so brutally honest when it comes to the wrestling business ’cause after that, he didn’t want to be screwed over ever again like that. He didn’t want to lose in his hometown of Canada and Vince forced him to lose. After reading Bret’s book (which is very good and definitely one of the best wrestling books I’ve ever read), I’m totally on his side.

People are saying it was a work but I don’t think it was. If it was then it would have been the greatest work of all time and it would be so hard to plan. Kevin Nash said it was a work but watch Bret Hart’s response in the video here:

It was a real incident that angered Bret for many years. Later in the years though since Vince and Bret buried the hatchet, they continued the “Screwjob” incident on WWE TV so they can have a closure which they did real good.

This makes me want to watch “The Wrestling With Shadows” documentary which is about Bret Hart but I didn’t know where to watch. I found out you can watch the documentary in it’s entirety on youtube so I’ll watch it on youtube this weekend.

Bret was always very protective of his career and his legacy and after the Montreal Screwjob incident, I can understand why. Bret may have buried the hatchet with McMahon but I don’t think he’ll ever bury the hatchet with Shawn. Bret will always have pure hatred for Shawn since Shawn himself was in on the whole “screwjob” thing. I think Shawn just wanted that WWE title and got what he wanted.

Bret is definitely one of my favorite wrestlers of all time, though. He is one of my top 10 favorites.

Hulk Hogan posts a tweet forgiving Bret Hart, is he for real?

Hulk Hogan posted this on his twitter.

“Last and only comment for Brett,I hope he finds happiness in life,I feel bad for him and I have totally forgiven him much respect HH”

Hogan posting that kind of surprised me. As you all know, Hulk and Bret have been feuding out of wrestling for years. If Hogan is serious on forgiving Bret, I’ll respect Hogan just this once. Somehow I can’t trust Hulk though.

Will Bret forgive him in return? Will Bret and Hogan bury the hatchet and call a truce? Maybe, but I don’t see it happening.

Hogan finally did something nice for once in his life, but you can’t take him seriously.

Thought: I think the RAW anonymous GM is the Ultimate Warrior, here’s why…

Brock here, thinks the RAW anonymous GM is no one other than the Ultimate Warrior. I’m 100% sure it is. I think this is my final pick and my final prediction. I used to think it was going to be the Rock, but no, it’s not gonna be the Rock. The Rock is too busy filming movies.

Why the Ultimate Warrior? Well pay attention to the storyline. All the clues and hints are pointing directly at the Ultimate Warrior. When Vince McMahon first announced there is a RAW anonymous GM, Vince said, he would have “Ultimate control”. In other clues, the anonymous RAW GM said he doesn’t care for The Undertaker and Bret Hart. Remember, the Warrior is no fan of them in real life. Also, notice how the Anonymous GM seems to be busting on Sheamus a lot? Ever wonder why? Maybe it’s because Sheamus has the nick name, “The Celtic Warrior”. Those are some hints. The Anonymous GM seems to be getting on Chris Jericho for the past couple of weeks. Why is this? It’s because the Warrior and Chris Jericho never feuded before in the history of wrestling. Chris Jericho likes to pick on the legends of wrestling and if Warrior was brought in, imagine Chris not liking it.

What about another clue? Well, if you watch RAW in the beginning of the intro theme, they keep showing classic footage of the Warrior in the open title sequence of RAW. Is that a hint that he’s about to make a huge return?

Keep in mind that the Ultimate Warrior and Vince McMahon had a long history, yes, they never got along too well in the past. There is a reason that the Warrior was being kept anonymous because of his history with Vince McMahon, an off public feud. The Warrior must of patched things up quietly with Vince behind the scenes of wrestling to sign Warrior back to the WWE.

I think the Warrior would come in as a babyface, not as heel. The Anonymous GM hasn’t been so nice to the Nexus, Sheamus and Jericho lately. He seems to be doing good for the good guy wrestlers. When Warrior comes in, he would feud with Jericho for a long while, then maybe Sheamus ’cause of his “Celtic Warrior” name. Warrior would continue to feud with the Nexus, giving them matches that they don’t want fight against. Then Vince McMahon would return to have a long feud with Warrior to try to fire Warrior or force him to retire like he did to Ric Flair. There could also be a Bret Hart return to feud with Warrior at some point too and maybe have a match together at the next Wrestlemania?

Yep, so this is who I think the RAW anonymous GM is. The Ultimate Warrior, gotta be. All the clues are pointing directly at him, can’t you see it?

Thought: Vince McMahon vs. Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 26, who will win the match?

So Wrestlemania 26 is just around the corner, it’s next Sunday folks! To be honest, I’m not very excited for this year’s Wrestlemania. Not a very exciting card this year. I am looking forward to seeing a few matches though. Bret vs. Vince is one of them. I will say what my prediction is on who will win this match. Who will win? This answer may surprise you….

Who I think will win this match Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon….the winner will simply be no one other than Vince McMahon. Why? Because on RAW the last few weeks, they have been showing clues that Vince could possibly win. They’ve been making it look like Bret Hart is going to beat Vince no matter what. Not gonna happen. Bret Hart’s run in WWE will be up to Wrestlemania. If Vince wins, it’ll be Vince’s way of retiring Bret for good. Bret will probably get a “You’re Fired” from Vince after the match.

Yes, Vince will probably get some help from other fellow wrestlers to help him win the match. Maybe a surprise run in interference with Shane McMahon or maybe another returning wrestler that is about to surprise the audience. Anyway, something huge and shocking will happen in this matchup.

I’ll watch Wrestlemania of course, but I feel this year’s card, is just a typical RAW episode. Other matches I look forward to is “Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker” and “The Money in the Bank” ladder match. That’s it, I think. Who knows, maybe the ppv will actually end up being a real good one, but I am predicting there will be like one or two good matches.

Thought: RAW is getting so much better!

Last night’s RAW was a really good episode! I actually thought the show was really well written and the wrestlers performed great! The matches are actually getting better too! Probably because the return of Bret Hart and Wrestlemania is up ahead is making it better. RAW usually gets better around Wrestlemania time.

The guest host for last night’s RAW was iconic NASCAR driver, Carl Edwards. I was expecting him to be a boring host. He actually did a good job. I liked him hosting last night. WWE actually had Carl on the show pretty much throughout the episode.

The storyline with Shawn Michaels HBK wanting to fight the Undertaker at Wrestlemania is really good stuff. Shawn keeps losing Wrestlemania opportunitties, now he lost the Unified tag belts with Triple H. So in a storyline, Shawn stormed off the set and said his career is over. He’s not really retiring I don’t believe, it’s just a storyline thing, possibly to set HBK up with a certain match at Wrestlemania.

Bret Hart was on RAW again last night. He appeared at the very end of the show attacking Vince McMahon from behind after Vince pulling a speech that he said, “Yes” he will wrestle Bret Hart at Wrestlemania for a match. After Vince left the ring with security gaurds, Bret started wrecking everything around the RAW sets. Tearing down the announcer table in a rage and walking back up by the ramp, knocking down speaker equipment with sparks flying in the air. When Bret knocked down a piece of equipment off a table, the thing hit his leg and he almost fell to the ground. That part wasn’t part of a storyline. It was a mistake and accident. Not sure how good of a wrestler he is after seeing that.

I’m getting excited for Wrestlemania. Next WWE PPV is the “Elimination Chamber” ppv, the one before Wrestlemania. Not sure if I’ll watch it or not, but I’m definitely watching “Wrestlemania” this year like I do every year.

Vince vs. Bret sounds exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing Bret in action again. I’m pretty sure Vince won’t be alone at Wrestlemania as he will probably get some help from his heel wrestler buddies such as Dave Batista or maybe even Shane McMahon will do a run in.

See the end of last night’s RAW in the video below and notice Bret almost hurt himself as he’s knocking down equipment on the RAW set.
