Film Review: The Expendables 2

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, and Jean Claude Van Damme
Directed by: Simon West

Earlier today, I just saw “The Expendables 2”. I did do a little shopping today, the only thing I picked up was, the “Jaws” Blu Ray which I’m looking forward to checking out. I’ve seen Spielberg’s “Jaws” too many times, but I’m just curious on how the film would look and sound on Blu. The “Jaws” Blu is pretty popular and selling fast, so I was curious on it. It is a classic Spielberg movie and one of his best. Now on with my review of “The Expendables 2”

Plot/synopsis: Mr. Church (Willis) reunites, “The Expendables” team, where he puts them on a mission that they need to retrieve an item from a safe that was on an airplane that was shot down in Albania. The Expendables team, gets two new recruits to join their group Billy (Hemsworth), and Maggie (Yu-Nan, a Chinese actress). While the team successfully gets the item from the plane, Billy is kidnapped by Jean Vilain (Van Damme). Without giving spoilers, one of the Expendables group is killed, so the rest of the Expendables do a mission of their own. To hunt down Jean Vilain and kill him.

When the first movie came out in 2010, the film got mixed reviews. You either loved the first one or hated it. Well it seems that Sly listened to the reviews. So he said, “Ah, to hell with it. I’m not going to direct the next one, I’ll pass the torch to someone else”. Sly just wanted to see if someone else could make the next film better… and surprisingly enough, the film was better. A MUCH BETTER FILM, than the last one.

As the movie opens, the action will start right off the bat. Kicking you in the ass hard, and the movie will immediately put you on the edge of your seat. The action was a lot more violent than the last one. The action scenes lasted longer too! Once an action scene starts it can go on for a good 20 to 30 minutes or more. It was indeed a thrill ride of an action movie. You can tell it was done the old school way. It clearly reminded me of those action films you see from the 80’s. That’s the whole point of “The Expendables” movies. They wanted a true action movie, that won’t be a CGI fest like most movies are nowadays.

The writing is definitely better than the last one. This one was more of an action/comedy, I had a few laughs at some of the jokes during the film. Especially the scene when Chuck Norris was first introduced. Did you know that they actually used one of his Chuck Norris facts (HINT: King Cobra)? It was great to finally see Chuck Norris in a big movie on the big screen after years of making straight to video films. The same can be said for Jean Claude Van Damme. It was finally great to see him on the big screen too. I thought Van Damme’s character, Jean Vilain, was one of the greatest movie villains I’ve seen in a long time. Van Damme did a great job in that role. I’m also happy to see Arnold back on the big screen in a major way. It’s nice to finally see him shooting machine guns again!

Of course, the character that continues to impress me the most is Dolph’s character, Gunner. He is a pretty special character and he’s the one that you would want to pay attention to the most out of the entire group. The first movie, Dolph misbehaved pretty badly, but now he’s a good guy in this one, obviously. In all honesty, Dolph’s character over the two films was never looked at as a villain, in my opinion. I think he was just confused on who he really is. My only complaint about this movie, is that I wished they used Jet Li more. He got lesser screen time in this one. Yes, Jet Li did get into a few good fight scenes, but his character is so cool. Just like the first movie, they didn’t use him much either. I also think they needed to do more with Randy Couture as well. Of course, with so many iconic action stars in one movie, it’s hard to give each guy a lot of screen time, so they try to give everyone a chance to shine as much as they can.

With all this being said, this was a thrill ride of an action movie. It was pretty breathtaking and will kick your ass. I had a smile on my face during the big gun battle toward the end of the film, when Arnold and Bruce both got into the action. Sly was real good in it too, of course. His fight scene with Jean Claude at the end of the film, was just epic.

This was indeed a major improvement than the last one, and I’m already looking forward to “EXP3”. So far, “EXP2” is one of the best films of 2012.

Score for “The Expendables 2” = **** (4 stars as in “excellent”)

Edit to add: Got the name of the director wrong, corrected it…

Who should be added to the casting of “Expendables 3”??? Here are my picks…

I haven’t seen “Expendables 2” yet, but I’m gonna go and see it on Monday. I get to see this movie for free ’cause I got a free movie ticket out of those Reward Zone cards.

With the possible recent additions to Nicolas Cage, Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford may join “EXP3”, what other cast additions that should be included for the next one? I can think of a few:

  • Kurt Russell – They’ve been trying to get him for the last two films but he declined every offer. Hopefully they actually get him for the next one!
  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – I am surprised they haven’t gotten the Rock yet, he would be a good addition. Hopefully for EXP3.
  • Tom Cruise – Love him or hate him, the man is an icon in the action genre. I could easily see Cruise being part of the Expendables group.
  • Liam Neeson – He would be a great bad guy!
  • Tom Hardy – He’s a pretty muscular dude and he’s been in some action movies himself, he would make a good fit.
  • Henry Cavill – He’s been in a few action movies here and there, especially a “Cold Light of Day” directed by JCVD, and he’ll be in the upcoming Superman flick. I think Henry would make a pretty cool addition.

As for female leads, how about Angelina Jolie? She’s been in a handful of action flicks over the years and she’s iconic enough that would be a good enough fit for the Expendables. Either Michelle Rodriguez or Kate Beckinsale would be pretty cool too.

Cool Video: Sly Stallone’s “Bullet to the Head” hits the internets!!!

WOW! Both Arnold and Sly are on a roll with action movies! They’re not just doing “Expendables” movies, they’ve been doing other action movies of their own which is really cool! Look like 2013 is going to be a huge year for Arnie and Sly. Arnold will be releasing, “The Last Stand” in 2013, and the two of them will be in ‘The Tomb” together too.

A lot of you know that I’m a huge Sly Stallone geek and would see just about anything with him. “Bullet to the Head” looks great! This film is based on the graphic novel, I believe.

See the trailer here at, AICN.

Report: Judge to decide Superman’s fate soon on whether or not, Joe Shuster, can get the rights back…

So is this heated legal drama with Warner Bros/DC vs. the Shuster/Siegel heirs almost over with? Seems so. More news came up about the long Superman legal battle that the U.S. District judge, cancelled the upcoming hearing originally scheduled for Aug. 20th, and the judge will decide right away whether or not Shuster will get portion of the rights, from the very first Superman “Action Comics” ever printed. (photo above)

More on the story, here.

I’m still rooting for Warner Bros./DC team to win this legal battle, all the way. This Toberoff sounds like a pretty sleazy lawyer. This battle is kind of depressing for a Superman fan like myself. I’m hoping this war will be over this year. Sounds like Toberoff is going to lose this battle anyway, since the Judge cancelled the hearing on him. The first Superman comic is very valuable and that’s why people fight over the rights. It’s all about the money, of course. What else would it be?

Warner Bros. is trying to get the full rights back ’cause they want to use some of that material in the movies. I hope WB’s will be victorious.

Thought: What’s going to happen with the “Snow White and the Huntsmen” sequel? Is there even going to be one???

With this stupid love triangle and drama going on between Kristen, Robert, and Rupert, this could affect the sequel for, “Snow White and the Huntsmen”. I haven’t seen the film, wasn’t interested so I’ll wait for DVD Netflix rental. The rumor is that Kristen has been dropped from the sequel and AICN claims, she hasn’t yet.

Read more on the story, here.

As I said before, while Kristen is evil for what she did, she’s not the only one to take the blame for this. Robert and Rupert are guilty as well. All three were unprofessional about this ’cause they should have known that this would affect the movie business and it has been. Hollywood films should be about entertaining people, yet we got into this drama, all of a sudden.

This is not the first time that Hollywood suffered love triangles in the movie business.

I remember Elizabeth Taylor had an affair with Richard Burton while being married to Eddie Fisher, during the making of “Cleopatra”. As soon as the affair was made public, sure enough, the media was all over it for days. Elizabeth Taylor was looked at as a trainwreck at the time and people hated her for it back then. Of course, the affair affected the film. She didn’t attend the film’s premiere because of the public backlash she got. Read the article about it, here.

Love triangles is nothing new in Hollywood. Happens all the time.

Cool Photo: Your first look at Arnie and Sly on the set of “The Tomb”…

Well, Arnie and Sly’s next movie after, “The Expendables 2”, “The Tomb” is in the works, and here’s your first look at the two action stars on set. Now, “The Tomb” has nothing to do with the Expendables. Totally different and new story. As you can see, “The Tomb” is taking place in a prison.

Glad, Arnold and Sly are finally doing movies together, which that should’ve happened years ago.

Report: Nicolas Cage confirmed for “Expendables 3”??? Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood in negotiations???

Sly Stallone and the crew for “The Expendables” team have been trying to get Nicolas Cage to join the cast ever since the first movie but Cage declined every time. Look like Lionsgate finally got him! Avi Lerner said that Cage is set to star, not saying what role he will be playing yet. Don’t know whether he’s playing the good guy or the villain, for “Expendables 3”.

No matter what you think of Nicolas Cage, the guy is an action star. So he fits in “The Expendables” perfectly. I think Cage would make a pretty good villain for the third one. Cage has been in more than 20 action films over the years and pretty big hits too. Movies like, “The Rock”, “Con/Air”, “Face/Off”, “Gone In 60 Seconds”, “Snake Eyes”, “8mm”, etc. The list goes on.

Lerner also says that Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford are also in talks.

More on the story, here.

I hope they’ll get Kurt Russell for the third one too. They’ve been trying to get Russell for the last two films, but he kept declining as well. It would be nice to see Tango and Cash re-team again.

Report: Warner Bros. wants Ben Affleck to direct, “Justice League” film…

Since Christopher Nolan is done with superhero films, Warner Bros. is eyeing “The Town” director, Ben Affleck, to helm, “The Justice League” film. WB’s didn’t ask Affleck yet, but they are planning on it. Affleck is known to giving himself an acting role to the movies he directs, so I’m sure he will play a character, in the “Justice League” film. Affleck would make a good Flash, or maybe Aqua Man. I hope he’ll be down for this ’cause this would be a huge opportunity for him and he could finally get recognized for his talent.

He has superhero movie experience. Remember now, he was in the “Daredevil” movie.

Variety reports.

Cool Video: Clint Eastwood’s next starring role but didn’t direct film, “Trouble With The Curve” is here…

When was the last time, Clint Eastwood starred the leading role in the film but didn’t direct it? Been a long time hasn’t it? YES IT HAS! The last time he starred in a film but didn’t direct was back in 1992 for the film, “In the Line of Fire”. I guess Clint, finally wants a break from directing and wants to let someone else direct him for once. Clint here is staring in a baseball movie titled, “Trouble With the Curve”, starring alongside with Justin Timberlake, John Goodman and Amy Adams.

This film looks pretty good but I wouldn’t see it in theater ’cause of Justin Timberlake. I don’t like him as an actor. I’ve seen in a few films and just don’t like his acting, he should quit acting go back to doing music.

On top of all this, I’m glad Clint is not done with acting yet. I’m sure he has a few acting roles left in him before he dies.

Edit to add: You can immediately tell this isn’t a Clint directed movie ’cause the style is different.
