While I love Metallica and all, there is one thing that I disagree with what they did. That is not inducting Dave Mustaine along with Metallica back in 2009. I think that was a stupid move on Metallica’s part. The reason Metallica didn’t want Dave Mustaine in the Hall of Fame with them ’cause they felt that Mustaine never played on any Metallica albums and for that reason alone, they felt he shouldn’t be in there. However, though… Mustaine did write some Metallica songs off of “Kill ‘Em All” and “Ride the Lightning”. Dave had some writing credits on those two albums.
Dave wrote “The Four Horseman”, “Jump In the Fire”, “Phantom Lord”, and “Metal Militia” which those songs are off the “Kill ‘Em All” record. As for the “Ride the Lightning” album, Dave helped write the songs… “Ride the Lightning” which is the title track and he also helped write the instrumental “The Call of Ktulu”.
Sure, Dave didn’t play on any Metallica studio albums but he helped get where Metallica is today with a song like “Ride the Lightning” which is one of Metallica’s biggest hits.
With that being said, I too think Megadeth deserves a Hall of Fame induction as well ’cause they are a great band. I’ve been a Megadeth fan for a long time and still am. I think “Dystopia” is one of their best albums as I’m always listening to it. Megadeth definitely deserves to get into the Rock Hall.
Well here it is, the Top 15 Music albums that came out this year. These are the albums that I could find that were actually good this year. I’ll post 15 of ’em, going from 15 to 1. The no. 1 choice will be my choice for Best Album of the year. I’ll post the album cover and a track along with it.
Enjoy:
15. Rihanna “Anti”
(Yeah sometimes I do like some pop music and I’m a fan of Rihanna. Heard all of her albums. Heard her newest album she released this year and I think “Anti” is actually a very good album. I heard it on Apple Music streaming earlier this year. Didn’t buy my own copy yet but I will soon. Love the album.)
14. Avenged Sevenfold “The Stage”
(I’ve been a fan of Avenged Sevenfold for a long while. This album is quite a huge surprise. So different than their earlier stuff. This album is like a rock opera and concept album. If you want something different than their typical nu-metal sound like they’re known for, this album is worth a listen.)
13. Lita Ford “Time Capsule”
(I’m a huge fan of Lita Ford. I love The Ruanways and all the girls from that group. Lita came back with a new record this year and it’s a pretty sick album. She still kills it. Great rock n’ roll on this album.)
12. Joe Bonamassa “Blues of Desperation”
(I’m a huge fan of Joe Bonamassa. Have been for a long time and this is his best album he has done in a long while. He’s a blue guitarist but he’s known for making tight blues rock. He brings back the blues rock in this album and it’s a killer record. Loved it!)
11. Phish “Big Boat”
(I didn’t really care for this album on the first listen but after a couple of more tries, it really grew on me. Now I believe that this is Phish’s best new album. Now I always find myself listening to it a lot. Phish seems to get better every album they do. Love this band!)
10. The Monkees “Good Times”
(The Monkees still kill it after all these years. Even though this is a new Monkees album with new original songs, they still sound like the Monkees. They’ve never changed their sound and style of music. The Monkees are the same guys: Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith… minus Davey Jones who passed away in 2012. The Monkees continued on without him and they still sound real good)
9. The Pretty Reckless “Who You’re Selling For”
(I’ve been a big fan of the Pretty Reckless for a long while and this is their best album they’ve got. It’s a pretty sick album. Different than their previous albums. Taylor Momsen’s singing on this album is so good and the guitar playing is great too. I couldn’t stop listening to this one.)
8. Steve Vai “Modern Primitive”
(Steve Vai came out with a new album along with “Passion & Warfare 25th Anniversary”. I was never a big Steve Vai fan but I just started getting into his music and I’m really digging his stuff a lot now. His new record is pretty amazing stuff really. Some of the best guitar playing you’ll ever hear!)
7. Amon Amarth “Jomsviking”
(Yeah, I’m a metalhead as some of you already know and I”m a fan of Amon Amarth, viking metal. This is a great band and this is their best album.)
6. Opeth “Sorceress”
(I’ve just started getting into Opeth like I said in another blog post. I’ve been listening to them all year long. They came out with a new record this year and it’s very good. Get it if you enjoy prog rock and want to hear something different.)
5. Megadeth “Dystopia”
(The mighty Megadeth came out with a new record this year and I would have to say this is their best new album. It had to be in the top 5 for sure. I dig every song on it and always find myself listening to it repeatedly.)
4. Dream Theater “The Astonishing”
(I’m a big fan Dream Theater. I’ve been listening to them for the past several years now. They came out with a new record that is a concept record. Two discs and it has over 2 hours of music. The album is played like a staged musical of some sorts. Tells a story. John Petrucci said the inspiration for the album was a mix of Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. It is both a science fiction and fantasy story. I think this is Dream Theater’s best album in a long while. This has Petrucci’s best guitar playing and James Labrie’s singing is great too.)
3. Led Zeppelin “The Complete BBC Sessions”
(So Led Zeppelin came out with the full and unedited BBC Sessions concert which is about time really. I thought Jimmy Page did a great job putting this one together. I love Led Zep’s BBC Sessions concert. This was the best remaster disc that Jimmy put out, really. This album is just amazing. I love all three discs.)
2. Metallica “Hardwired to Self Destruct”
(So Metallica finally came out with their new album this year. This album got a lot of mixed reviews. Some hate it, some love it kind of thing but I think the whole album is really good. Loved every song. I believe it is their best album since the Black Album, in my opinion. This album had to be high on the list. Finally, Metallica improved their sound quality in the studio and Lars improved his drumming too. I’m gonna be listening to this album a lot, I think.)
1. David Bowie “Blackstar”
(So David Bowie released a new record on his birthday earlier this year in January. Then he passed away suddenly two days later after the album’s release. I’ve been a huge Bowie fan for years and this album really is beautiful & amazing stuff. It’s a masterpiece for sure. I couldn’t stop listening to this record ever since it first came out. Even though the album has 7 tracks, it’s still a beautiful record. Bowie’s singing is jaw droppingly haunting and the music is killer on it, too. Different than his earlier stuff. It was believed that Bowie was trying to say goodbye before he passed with his record. He definitely had a message with this album for sure. This would have to be my choice for best album of this year ’cause it really is an amazing record. I loved everything about it. This is one of those records I can listen to over and over again and would never get tired of.)
Well, there’s my top 15 Best Music albums. I’ll do the movies list after I see “Star Wars: Rogue One” which I will see that film tomorrow afternoon. Looking forward to it!
There were several music artists that pulled out of performing at Trump’s Inauguration on Jan. 20th with the latest being singer Andrea Bocelli. I guess the reason Andrea Bocelli backed out is ’cause he was afraid it might hurt his career. Many of Bocelli’s fans threatened boycott is why. Did Bocelli make a huge mistake? I would say so!
Many people would think Jackie Evancho’s career would be over just for performing for Trump’s inauguration but if you really believe that, you really are a delusional person who is probably brainwashed by the MSM. In fact, Jackie’s career skyrocketed ’cause her Christmas album, “Someday At Christmas” shot to #1 in the Classical Billboard Charts after agreeing to team with Trump.
I’m almost pretty sure Kanye West’s album sales has gone way up since his meeting with Trump too. Ya see? Supporting Trump won’t hurt you as a person at all. Supporting Trump isn’t all that bad, stop being a bunch of cowards!
Ever since the Godfather of Soul, James Brown passed away 10 years ago today, I never forgot him. Ever since then, I mentioned his anniversary passing each year. While it’s Christmas, never forget that a music legend left us 10 years ago.
I fucking love James Brown! Huge fan for sure. I thought his music was genius. Now don’t go accusing me of becoming a James Brown fan just because he died, I’ve been a fan of his long before that. I listened to his music for a pretty long time!
I’ve first heard about the Swedish prog rock/metal band, Opeth, through Guitar World magazine. I’ve read a few interviews about Opeth through Guitar World which is how I was first introduced to them. Their interviews with that magazine got me intrigued with their music so I decided to check them out for myself. That’s what I like about Guitar World magazine ’cause they help introduce me to a lot of music which is what that magazine is here for to begin with. Opeth is becoming one of my really favorite rock bands right now. Why do I admire them so much? Well, musically they can do it all. They’re not just metal. They can do it all. The singer/guitarist for the band, Mikael Åkerfeldt is so talented. He can do more than death metal growls and screams which is what I like about him. Mikael can sing clearly too. Mikael can sing in all different vocal techniques. As for their music goes, they can play all styles of music. They’re prog rock. That’s what I call them. People call them “heavy metal” but I don’t believe in that term. I like the term “metal” better. Yeah, they do play metal but that’s not all they play. They also play regular rock and they do a lot of folk & acoustic music too. Not all their stuff are heavy, they write a lot of slower ballads too.
This band is so talented and I hope to get my opportunity to see them live ’cause I would see them in a heartbeat if they ever play a show around here. I think their newest record “Sorceress” is pretty amazing stuff. Probably their best record in their career. I heard their entire discography and so far my favorite albums they did were: “Deliverance”, “Watershed”, “Blackwater Park”, “Pale Communion” and their latest, “Sorceress”. Opeth is a really great band. I’m becoming obsessed with that band now, can’t stop listening to them.
I was listening to a lot of Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Megadeth and bands such as those but my attention turned away from them so I can listen to Opeth more. I would seriously recommend you listen to Opeth. They really are talented and they are underrated too. They deserve more recognition. I’m trying to collect all of Opeth’s albums. I already heard them all through online streaming but I don’t do online streaming anymore. From now on, I would rather buy the album from either Itunes or physical CD.
Back to Opeth, I really respect that band. I would like to get a t-shirt of theirs sometime. Yeah, I still love to wear rock band t-shirts even though I’m 40 and I don’t give a shit if people have a problem with that!
So Nirvana and Pearl Jam are now in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. It definitely seems like that the Hall of Fame is trying to induct all the 90’s grunge bands. When will Soundgarden ever get in ’cause they are eligible, I would think? Stone Temple Pilots is just about eligible, I think they’ll be eligible next year. Alice In’ Chains is Hall of Fame worthy and they are definitely eligible ’cause their first album “Facelift” was released in 1990. The Pixies are considered a grunge band and I think they’re worthy too.
I think it’s interesting that the Hall of Fame are trying to induct 90’s grunge bands which is the right thing to do. That genre definitely did change rock n’ roll history.
Aaaaahhh, the good ol’ 90’s. I miss those days when rock n’ roll was all over the mainstream… grunge and alternative rock they used to call it. Even though the Smashing Pumpkins were not considered grunge music, I think they’ll make their way into the Hall of Fame at some point. I think the Pumpkins deserve it for sure especially the original lineup: Billy C., D’arcy, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin. I love the Smashing Pumpkins, always did.
I’m a huge fan of the 90’s era and I’ll tell ya right now that I still listen to that kind of music. I love 90’s music and still do. All that music was a big part of my teenage years. I was in high school during those years. I think I was in junior high when Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and Pearl Jam “Ten” first came out. I remember buying those albums when they came out and still have those CD’s in my collection right now, still sitting on my CD shelf. I remember back then Pearl Jam’s “Ten” was being played everywhere I go. I would hear other students playing that album on their boomboxes and shit like that. That album was a massive hit back then. So if you don’t think Pearl Jam is Hall of Fame worthy, you’re out of your fucking mind. Of course, Pearl Jam is worthy. They accomplished so much. They’re still together doing their thing with the same members. I don’t like Pearl Jam anymore but I admired their career and what they did in the past. I know the Hall of Fame is probably getting knocked for picking Pearl Jam but I think they did the right thing. Pearl Jam had quite a history and legacy. Can’t deny it whether you like them or not.
With all this being said, I hope the Hall of Fame inducts Soundgarden, STP, Alice In Chains and the Smashing Pumpkins soon. I think STP will be next for 2018 ’cause they would hit 25 years with their first album “Core” by now.
I’m pretty happy with all the inductees for the next Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Yes is finally in which is about time! I’m a huge fan of Yes. They’re one of my favorite rock n’ roll bands of all time!
I stopped liking Pearl Jam but I will always love their first three albums ’cause I thought “Ten”, “Vs.” and “Vitalogy” were pretty amazing records. Still love those records now. Their newer stuff? Not so much but Pearl Jam are legends and they accomplished so much. That can’t be denied. They’re the start of the grunge movement in the 90’s.
Tupac I do like but I don’t listen to him that much but I should. I respect his legacy and what he did to the hip hop industry. Yes, “hip hop” is rock n’ roll, get over it.
Joan Baez, I’m not a big fan of either but respect her legacy and what she did to the industry.
I do love ELO and Journey for sure. 2017 Hall of Fame is pretty decent this year; although, I’m disappointed that Steppenwolf got snubbed this year but there’s always 2018 for them.
Kanye just posted that on twitter after his meeting with Trump at Trump Tower today. So it seems that Kanye is serious on running for prez in 2024.
I’m all for Kanye becoming prez after Trump ’cause Kanye actually has some pretty good ideas. Only thing that’s scary about Kanye becoming a future prez, that would make the Kardashians the first family. Imagine Kim Kardashian becoming our first lady someday? Hopefully they’ll be divorced before then. While I have no problem with Kanye and never did, I do have a problem with those Kardashians like everyone else. I’m not a fan of the Kardashians either. Just think that Kim Kardashian could become our first lady someday.
On top of that, maybe this is why Kanye wanted to speak with Trump today… maybe Kanye wanted advice from Trump on how to win elections and things like that, ya know? Kanye supports Trump ’cause Trump is one of the very few who wants to do something about Chicago violence and plus, Trump does more for black people than Obama has ever done. Trump knows how to handle race relations better than anybody while all Obama wants to do is divide us. There are a lot of black people who support Trump so you shouldn’t have been surprise to see that Kanye turned out to be a Trump supporter. Welcome to the Trump Train, Kanye. I never had a problem with Kanye but now I think I’m a fan and willing to start buying his records. We could soon have our first rapper as a president.
What Kanye album should I buy first? I’ll probably check out the one he released earlier this year… “The Life Of Pablo”. I do enjoy some rap, pop and R&B music.
Earlier this morning, I just listened to the new Avenged Sevenfold album, “The Stage”. This album is surprisingly very different than their earlier material. You know how most of their music are mostly their typical nu-metal stuff that young kids would enjoy? Well, this album is very different, totally. This album is a concept album. More like a rock opera kind of like the Who’s “Tommy” a little bit. Avenged Sevenfold are mostly known to writing short songs that would be good for radio but with this album; however, the songs on it are maturing. The songs on this album are longer… probably around 7 to 10 minutes long.
I enjoyed every track on the album. I don’t know why a lot of people hate this band ’cause if you actually give them a chance and really listen to them, you would find that they are really good. I’ve been listening to Avenged Sevenfold for a long while and I think “The Stage” is probably their best album in the band’s career. I think M. Shadows is a great rock singer. I also think Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates are excellent guitar players as well. This band deserves more respect for sure.
Greg Lake was the singer and bassist for prog rock band King Crimson before becoming a full time member of prog rock band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer. I never listened to King Crimson all that much but I listened to ELP a lot. I love the ELP album, “Brian Salad Surgery”. There is only one surviving member of ELP left and that is the drummer, Carl Palmer. Greg Lake is up there with Keith Emerson now.
