Film Review: Kick-Ass

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Andrew Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Mark Strong

Directed by: Matthew Vaughn

So I finally got to see the movie “Kick-Ass” today. Here is my review…

Plot/synopsis: Some may think this is an original film, not an adaptation of someone else’s work, but sorry, it is. “Kick-Ass” was adapted by a comic book series created by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. The comic is published by Icon Imprint which is owned by Marvel comics. Taken place in NYC, a young high school student named, Dave, has an obession with comic books. He dreams of becoming a real life superhero himself. So he tries to make it come true by purchasing a green costume off the internet. He then trains to become an actual superhero by working out, learning how to fight, and practising moves on rooftops of buildings. Dave calls himself, “Kick-Ass” as a superhero name. His superhero dreams start to come true once Dave saves a man’s life being chased down by muggers. A leader of a drug gang becomes obsessed with wanting to kill Kick-Ass. Kick-Ass teams up with other superheros, Big Daddy (Nic Cage) and Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) to try and hunt down this gang taking over NYC.

This film wasn’t liked very well by the critics. Many of them call this movie offensive because it had children in a violent movie and swearing, all that. blah blah blah… I never read the “Kick-Ass” comics, but I believe the director’s intention was to stay true to the original comic. The comics had the same thing, kids killing other people and swearing.

I thought the movie was brilliant and entertaining all the way through. Very enjoyable movie. I think Hit-Girl, Chloe’s character stoled the show. She was the most entertaining and she is only like 10 or 12 years old. She kills people and says a lot of F-words. I think this is Nic Cage’s best role in a long time. Many people hate Nicolas Cage, but I don’t. I’ve always liked him. Always thought his acting style was interesting and different. Plus, I like Cage’s knowledge with comics. What impressed me about Nic Cage in this film was that he did an Adam West impression in the film dressed as Batman.

The action sequences were a lot of fun to watch. When Hit-Girl gets into action, she’ll do all kinds of crazy moves and use all kinds of crazy weapons. Nic Cage’s character, Big-Daddy, has an obsession with guns, not gadgets like Batman. I thought the film was real good. It didn’t bore me and no dissapointments. Just a fun flick, that’s all it is. After seeing this film makes me want to read the comics.

It maybe offensive with children in a violent movie, and you will see adults beating children up in this film, but hey, it’s only a movie, right? It might anger parents, of course, but controversial films like this helps draw people into see the movie. Controversy creates cash. Controversy creates popularity. I liked the film a lot. This is all I have to say about it. See it soon.

Score for “Kick-Ass” = *** (3 stars as in “good”)

Report: Cary Elwes to return to the “Saw” franchise….

Actor, Cary Elwes, will be reprising his role as Dr. Gordon in the upcoming “Saw VII”. Cary Elwes was only in the first Saw movie which also starred, Danny Glover. Cary will be returning to “Saw VII” to play one of the leading roles.

More on it here:

I’m not much of a Saw fan. I loved the first one a lot though, I just didn’t like any of the other ones. As long as Cary’s coming back, I’ll go see it. He’s a great actor and very underrated too. Don’t know who Cary Elwes is? You might remember him as Wesley, the man in black, from the “Princess Bride” movie, and he was also in “Shadow of the Vampire”.

Report: Sly Stallone auditioned for the “Superman” role?

Here is a shocker for you. In the late 1970’s when Warner Bros, was just getting “Superman: The Movie” off the ground and auditioning actors to play the Superman/Clark Kent role there are some suprising names that came up who auditioned for Superman. Ilys Salkind speaks at the Wizard World Comic Con in Anaheim, during his speech he speaks everything about Superman. He talked about the actors who auditioned for the original Superman. Surprising names that came up who auditioned for the role were Burt Reynolds, Robert Redford, and James Caan.

Who else was in that list? Yes, that’s right. Sylvester Stallone was considered for the role, but Warner Bros. turned him down and the Superman role obviously went to Christopher Reeve instead. Sly has talked about auditioning for Superman in his interviews before, so this is true.

Sly does seem to be a fan of comics and superhero’s as Sly was in a superhero comic book film once, and that is “Judge Dredd”. Will Sly ever play in another superhero movie ever again? Likely not. I don’t see Sly acting in other movies anytime soon. It looks like he wants to concentrate on acting in his own movies that he directs from now on.

If you think about it, Sly wouldn’t make a bad Superman at all. If you’ve seen Sly in the movie “Tango & Cash”, where’s he’s seen wearing a suit and glasses like Clark Kent, Sly reminded me of Clark Kent in that film.

Report: Charles Grodin just might be game for the “Midnight Run” sequel!!!

Well, that didn’t take long for Charles Grodin to hear about the “Midnight Run” sequel that Deniro wants to do. Charles Grodin seems to be interested after all! How cool is that? It can’t be a “Midnight Run” sequel without Grodin, maybe that’s the reason he wants on. Plus, Grodin haven’t done anything in movies lately and this would be a huge comeback for the guy.

On a side note, when Grodin returns don’t expect him to have dark hair like he had back in his younger days, where he was looking cool. The guy is 75 years old now.  If he gets confirmed to reprise his role, it’ll be great to see Grodin working again.

I like Charles Grodin, I remember he also starred in those family films, “Beethoven” about this dog. He was real funny in those movies.

Report: Platinum Dunes slaughters the “Friday the 13th” sequel…

Platinum Dune’s, Brad Fuller, announced the company has cancelled the sequel to the “Friday the 13th” remake. Which is very weird since the film was very successful and made quite a lot in the box office. I actually liked the “Friday the 13th” remake quite a lot.

Don’t worry Friday fans. Never say never. Another studio will probably pick up the rights so they can continue the franchise. I think it will be pretty damn cool if Paramount Pictures can get the series back. Remember, “Friday the 13th” started out with Paramount Pictures with the original series. Now that the remake is a success, that’s the only reason another studio will pick it up. There is no way this will end for good. There will be another “Friday” movie, trust me.

Report: Christopher Nolan to confirm news for “Dark Knight 3” this July?

Well, look like “The Dark Knight 3” is officially about to happen. Warner Bros. plans to announce official news this July when Christopher Nolan starts to do press for “Inception” (an action/sci fi thriller that stars Leo Dicaprio).

Wonder who the villains will be for the next flick? I think the Joker could definitely come back ’cause they let him live. It is not a spoiler that the Joker lived at the end of the movie ’cause everybody knows that Batman never wanted to kill Joker, he just wanted him in jail. Since Heath Ledger is dead, he will obviously have to be replaced by a different actor. Most would say no other Joker actor would top Heath, but I disagree. I can think of one actor that would make a better joker than Heath Ledger…and that would be no one other than Mark Hammill. Yeah, the Star Wars guy who voiced Joker in many Batman animated films, and Mark voiced Joker for “Arkham Asylum” video game.

I think Mark finally deserves his opportunity to play a live action version of the Joker as it would be amazing.

As for other Batman villains, Nolan should definitely have the Riddler, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and the Penguin. Poison Ivy would be cool too.

Report: “Beetlejuice” sequel in the works soon? Geena Davis kind of hints at it…

Rumours of a “Beetlejuice” sequel is just starting to hit the web. Geena Davis, who stars in “Beetlejuice” along with Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin and Winona Ryder says she’s definitely down for starring in it if the sequel is greenlighted. Michael Keaton himself says he’s definitely game for starring in the sequel. Geena, plans to get in touch with Tim Burton to see if she can try and talk him into wanting to do the sequel to this movie.

I too am a huge fan of “Beetlejuice” film. I think it’s Keaton’s best role over Batman, in my opinion. It would be awesome if Keaton would reprise the role again. Michael Keaton needs to return to the mainstream of movies, because he hasn’t done a huge mainstream flick since ’98’s “Jack Frost”. Everything else he did after that were flops.

People would think Michael Keaton would be too old to be playing “Beetlejuice” again, but with today’s technology of Hollywood make-up, think how much better the Beetlejuice character would look like now than back in the 90’s. Plus it would be awesome if the original cast came back, including Alec Baldwin, Winona Ryder, and Jeffrey Jones. Used to watch “Beetlejuice” obsessively when I was a kid. Such an awesome movie.

Cool Video: Rambo ranch…

This video is so sweet, that I just had to post it. A film maker films a small documentary where he visits the film location, Rambo ranch, which is seen at the very end of 2008’s, “Rambo”. The film maker then walks through the same ranch that was seen in the movie. The film maker even interviews the owner of the ranch. He asked the owner questions on how Sylvester Stallone hired the owner to film the movie on, and all that.

Like Sylvester Stallone or not, he is a creative and talented film director. Sly tries his best to make his movies realistic.

Enjoy the video below.

Report: “Predators” writers set to write for new “Masters of the Universe” movie…

Sony Pictures is still moving forward with the “Masters of the Universe” reboot. They have hired Mike Finch and Alex Litvak, who wrote the script for Robert Rodriguez’s “Predators” to write for “Masters of the Universe”.  The film will be about He-Man battling against Skeletor on his home planet of Eternia.

More on it here:

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/16865/-predators-scribes-to-tackle-he-man-at-sony

Glad the film is moving forward. Now they need to start casting. They would probably go for a younger guy to play He-Man but who should play He-Man and who should play Skeletor? For a He-Man they would need a built and muscular actor. I think they would go for someone from WWE or UFC.

If they can actually get Dolph for He-Man again, that would be very surprising. I don’t think they would go for Dolph again but it would be kind of cool though.

Report: “Johnny English” sequel greenlighted…

Universal Pictures has greenlighted a sequel to the 2003 spy comedy, “Johnny English” that stars Rowan Atkinson. Rowan Atkinson is the former star of the hit TV show, “Mr. Bean”. Rowan already agreed to reprise his role for the sequel, so he is definitely coming back.

Variety Reports:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118017386.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

It may sound crazy and silly, but Rowan needs this. He hasn’t done anything in film since the first “Johnny English” movie in 2003. Rowan needs a comeback in a huge way. I like Rowan as I was a fan of the “Mr. Bean” TV show, used to watch it all the time.

The sequel may actually be good and might be a very funny one if done right.
